Chapter 214
HANNAH
Or a result of thinking about what Asher was up to.
"Have you told Alpha Wallace about this?" he said.
"I haven't." After a pause, I went on. "I'm starting to think that maybe Willa is right and it's just my nerves acting up-"
My father waved his hand impatiently.
"That's nonsense," he said. "I may not have seen a white wolf, apart from you, in my time but I know that their dreams are usually a foretelling of the future. You wouldn't have these dreams night after night if they weren't trying to tell you something. Besides I've seen you these last few weeks. You've been happy, having fun like every other girl your age would. And yes, I know you would be worried about where Asher is, what he's planning and all that, but that's not mostly what you think about, is it?"
For the first time, I really thought about this.
My father was right. I had not been obsessing over Asher since there were a lot more normal things going on on my life now that took up my time and headspace.
"Well?" he asked, shaking me lightly to bring me out of my thoughts.
"I think you're right," I said.
"Of course I am. Another thing... while you had Dawson's threats hanging over you, did you have repeated dreams like these ones?"
"No, Dad. Not at all. Just one or two."
My father spread his hands. "You see? You shouldn't take this lightly. We must tell the Alpha." He shifted slightly so he grip my shoulders and look me right in the eye. His normally open, pleasant face was lined with worry. His fingers were digging into my shoulders but he didn't know it. "As a father, you know I would be the last to scare you. I would take all the monsters away if I could."
"Yes," I said. I knew it.
"I wish I could this time, Hannah but I have to tell you the truth. These dreams are serious. You have to be on your guard now. You must get ready for anything."
***********
Very early the next morning, my father and I, after a brief talk with my anxious mother, set out for the Alpha's house.
The Alpha was headed out but showed us into his study without a word. He waved us into chairs.
"I assume anything that has brought you here this morning is of grave importance," he said, looking from one to the other of us as he sat. "There isn't any problem, I hope."
"We are not exactly sure yet, Alpha," my father said. "Hannah?"
I narrated my dreams to the Alpha and left out nothing.
"I only found out about this last night," my father said when I had finished. "I suggested we come to you."
"As you should." The Alpha rapped a finger on his desk as he thought. "This Asher boy... I suppose we have not been paying him as much attention as we should have after his father's death. To tell you the truth, I didn't see him as much of a threat with Dawson gone. Perhaps it was too soon to conclude. No worries. I will remedy the situation. I'll send out people to find and bring him in dead or alive from wherever he's lurking."
"A good course of action," my father said.
The Alpha nodded. "Chances are he will want to sneak into Breakstone perhaps in the hopes of finding those still loyal to his family though I doubt there will be. But still, Elliot, keep an ear to the ground."
"Of course," said my father.
The Alpha cast a stern eye on me. "Why didn't you tell me about these dreams?"
"A part of me thought they didn't really mean anything," I said.
"Still you should have told me. You must know that most of your dreams are not just dreams. Don't take them for granted. Thankfully no harm has been done yet. Another thing. My sons leaving the pack is not exactly a secret so whoever wants to try hurting you might get ideas then. When they leave, you have to take extra care of yourself. Cooperate with the guards assigned to protect you. Also keep your eyes open, you understand?"
I said I did.
But I was tired. Tired of worrying, tired of constantly looking over my shoulder. Sometimes a part of me wished the threat could just come already and be done with it.
Anything was better than waiting, obsessing over when the blow would fall. If it would fall.
The Alpha waved to the door.
"You may leave," he said. "I have a few things to discuss with your father."
I stood in the corridor, undecided for a moment then decided to go and see my mates.
