Chapter 305
WILLA
"Let's not talk about it anymore," I said. "You're bruised. Let's go get you fixed up."
I started to walk down the corridor. I stopped when I noticed he wasn't following.
"Theron-" I began, a pleading note in my voice.
"Do you know why I fought him?" Theron asked.
"You... found out about what happened, got mad at hit him?"
In a low quiet voice he said, "But how did I find out? That's the question. Lucian told me everything. And I mean everything."
"What?" I cried, staring at him in disbelief.
"The bastard's going around telling everyone who cares to listen that he's fucked you. Why do you think I got so mad?" Theron swallowed convulsively. "It's one thing to kiss and tell. It's another thing entirely for a guy describe what happened like the girl in question is a- a slut. I can't even begin to tell you the vile things that son of a bitch said."
I was stunned. I was hurt. But more than that I was angry.
If I ever had any doubts that Lucian wasn't just using me to warm his bed while he hunted for another bedmate, they were gone now.
How many people had he told already? His friends? The other students at the camp? Maybe everyone in his dorm?
If the news had filtered to Naomi, which I was becoming sure it had, she would be laughing her heart out with her friends.
My breath hitched in my throat. I felt tears start to prick the back of my eyes.
I stared at the floor and blinked them away.
"Lucian told you that?" I said.
"Yes." Theron's voice softened. "I'm so sorry you had to hear it from me, but I can't keep the truth from you. It's best you know the kind of person he is. Willa..."
Theron's hands fell on my shoulder. I was so ashamed now I couldn't meet his eyes.
"Listen to me," he said. "What is done is done. The only way you can win now is for us to keep pretending I'm your boyfriend. Do it and show Lucain that you don't care." He tilted my chin up with a finger under my jaw. "Don't let that jerk win this round."
***********
Later that evening, there was a knock on my door. I dabbed at my eyes, glanced in the mirror to make sure my eyes weren't red from struggling not to cry.
I hadn't seen Naomi, Carmen and Lisa since I had gotten back. Usually one or the other of them would have come by the room hours ago.
I went to the door, sure it would be one of them. I unlocked it, threw it open.
It wasn't any of my roommates on the other side. It was Lucian.
My fingers curled around the doorknob and gripped it tightly. Lucian made a move to come in.
I shifted a bit, blocking his path.
"Can I at least come in?" he said, fingering a bruise on his cheek.
If he thought the sight of the blue-black bruises covering almost every part of his face would make me feel remotely sorry for him, he had another think coming.
I was so mad I wanted to even hit him some more. Hit him until I got rid of some of the anger churning inside me.
"No!" I said sharply. "You will say whatever you want to say out there."
"What's this about, Willa?" he said with a frown. He gestured to his face. "Can't you see that bloodsucker friend of yours beat me up? You're on his side now or mine?"
"You're an immature jerk, Lucian," I choked out.
"What?"
"You heard me." I heard the shake in my voice. I took a deep wavery breath to get it under control before saying, "You didn't even wait a day before you went about telling everyone that we slept together. Is that what you do to all your... conquests?"
"What are you talking about?" he said. His tone of surprise was almost convincing. Almost. "I didn't tell anyone about what happened. Where did you even get that from anyway?"
I slammed a fist against the wall.
"Stop fucking lying!" I shouted in his face. "Did you or did you not tell Theron about it?"
Lucian's face fell. He shoved his fingers through his hair and exhaled.
"Well?" I pressed.
My lips were trembling.
I hated the sudden disappointment I felt at the look on his face. I realized that even now I had been holding out hope that Theron had been lying. That Lucian hadn't said those things about me.
I hated feeling that way. And I hated Lucian more.
"Willa..." he said.
"For Pete's sake, Lucian! Answer the damn question!"
"Yes," Lucian said slowly, reluctantly. "Yes, I told him."
I stepped back and slammed the door in his face.
