Chapter 038
HANNAH
I paced my breathing and counted my steps under my breath to distract myself from what was going on. I just wanted to be in my head all the time, if that was possible. I wanted my mind to dissociated from what my body was being forced to do.
But it was hard to find my happy place when Asher stopped walking and turned to growl at me. "Hey, walk faster, will you? What the hell is wrong with you anyway?" He eyed the pile of books I was carrying. "You had better not let any of those books touch the floor or you'll be picking them up with your teeth."
I nodded, taking great care that my eyes remained downcast. That seemed to please him. He was always pleased whenever I didn't put up a protest to whatever outrageous demands he made. He kept walking. I followed.
Things were now back to the way they used to be before the triplets had showed up. I was back to lugging Asher's books and things around the school, escorting him to glass and being his general dogsbody, or to put it more accurately, his slave. This time, it was slightly even worse.
"Hope they have food fit enough for me to it," Asher said to one of his friends who had stopped to say hi as he pushed open the door of the cafeteria. "Yesterday's food wasn't fit even for dogs."
Asker's friend laughed sycophantically in response.
The cafeteria was more crowded than the hallway we had just walked through so I had to raise my head so I didn't bump into anyone.
That was a huge mistake. Big one.
Like a magnet, my eyes were first drawn to the table across the room around which Jace, Chase and Cade were seated. All three were staring at me. It cut me to the heart to see the disappointment and anger on their faces, all directed at me. They turned away and resumed their conversation like I had suddenly become invisible.
It hurt so bad to see that they had already given up on me. But then what else could they do? I couldn't say I blamed them. Most likely I would do the same thing if our roles were reversed. If only my mother was not caught in the middle of all this. If only...
I gave my head a little shake. Wishing things were different would not solve my problems. It would only make me more miserable in the end.
"Hannah, what the fuck are you staring at?"
Asher's harsh enquiry came from somewhere behind me. I turned to see he was halfway to his seat and I, like a fool, had been standing at the spot staring at the triplets.
"Nothing," I said quickly.
But I was too late. Asher followed the direction of my gaze. When he spotted the triplets, his lips curved into what could only be described as an evil smile.
"Well well," he drawled. "If it isn't the three losers. Can't believe they still had the nerve to show up in school after their disgrace the other day. You wanted to go say hi to them?" I shook my head. "You talk whenever I ask you a question, bitch!"
"No. No, I don't want to."
"Hmmm. We'll see."
He went on to take a seat at an empty table. Out of his pocket he took a pen, a slip of paper and began writing something in it. I heaved a sigh of relief that he wasn't going to make trouble with the triplets. Turned out that I had gotten optimistic a little too soon.
"Here. Take this," Asher said, holding out a folded note to me. I shifted the books to the other arm and took. "Give that to one of the triplets, any of them, maybe Jace." He shrugged. "You choose. Well? What are you waiting for?" he added when I remained standing there.
Of all the things Asher had made me to do these past few days, this was by far the worst. I wondered, not for the first time, if he stayed awake all night just thinking of more creative ways to torment me.
"Asher, please," I begged. "I- I can't go to them. I'll do any other thing you want but please don't make me go there."
He shot to his feet. His fingers twisted themselves into the strands of my hair. He tilted my head back until it felt like my neck would snap if he bent it any further. The students seating around eyed Asher warily but knew better than to interfere. "What I told you do what not a suggestion. It was an order. Do what I asked you to do and don't be a bitch! Do you understand?"
