Chapter 143

HANNAH

"Willa!" I screamed, barely recognizing my voice.

I rushed to her, screaming her name over and over again. Her jerking foot struck the table. The objects on it fell to the floor with a defeating crash, drowning out my mate's shocked cries. Chase grabbed her legs and tried to hold her still.

I held her head up. There was some vague idea I had about keeping a person having a seizure elevated. Cade and Jace's hands fluttered helplessly over their sister.

Alpha Wallace knelt and raised Willa's lids. Only the white of her eyes showed.

"Jace!" he bellowed. "Go and get the doctor. Now!"

Jace blinked and dashed out of the room.

"Stay with me, Willa. Stay with me," Alpha Wallace murmured.

He gripped her hand in both of his and stared at her with fixed concentration.

I heard movement at the door. I turned, half expecting to see the doctor, but it was just the maid. She was shaking and folding her hands.

"What happened to her?" I asked. "How did she get this way?"

"I don't know," she wailed. "She asked me to get her a drink. I went to get it, and then I came back and found her like this."

"What was she doing before you left?" I asked, feeling damn sure something must have led up to this.

Willa had been perfectly fine today, perfectly healthy.

There was no way she would suddenly have a seizure of this magnitude without a cause.

Cade turned to the maid, who was crying profusely.

"What?" he barked when the maid didn't immediately answer. "What was she doing?"

The girl started. She dragged her eyes from Willa to me. "She was watching videos with her phone and eating chocolates."

"Chocolates. What chocolates?"

My eyes followed the maid's pointing finger. I let Chase hold Willa and crawled over to the small box of chocolates lying on the floor. A large part of it had been eaten. One, which had rolled out of the box, had been bitten into. I picked it up and held it to my nose.

Underneath the normal mouthwatering smell of chocolate was something else. Something that smelled a little too foul. Its aroma made the tiny hairs on my nose bristle. The smell was so subtle I would have missed it if I had not been concentrating.

I dropped the piece of chocolate and wiped my hands on my jeans.

"Poison," I said, turning to the five pairs of eyes watching me. "The chocolates were poisoned."

Cade swung Willa up into his arms. He had gone very pale.

"We need to find out what kind of poison it was," he said.

FOUR HOURS AGO

Willa's foot tapped the floor impatiently. She kept checking her watch. She stood in the empty corridor leading to the principal's office. No one was coming yet.

How long was the Lycan Queen going to keep Hannah anyway? Wasn't she done inspecting the girls? Others had returned except Hannah.

She needed to talk to Hannah fast. Even now she could hardly believe it, but she had suspected it. Oh yes, she had. She had been right all along.

Thank the goddess she had found this out on time before Hannah went in over too deep with...

Someone tapped her shoulder.

Willa jolted and turned. Mia was standing behind her, smiling a little sheepishly.

"Sorry, I startled you," she said apologetically.

"What do you want?" Willa snapped, not bothering to hide her hostility.

When Hannah heard what she had to say, she was sure she would very well be shocked.

"I want to talk to you," Mia said, still smiling though it didn't meet her eyes.

"About what?"

Mia cleared her throat. "Um, I know you don't like me very much. Maybe that's because you don't know me and probably don't trust me. But I like hanging out with you and Hannah. I hope we can be friends..."

Willa scoffed. "Friends? I don't need any more friends."

Mia gave her a wide-eyed stare. Willa had to hand it to the girl. She was really good at pretending. And acting.

"Oh, come off it, Mia," Willa spat. "Aren't you tired of the pretence already?"

"What are you talking about? Did I do something wrong?"

Willa looked down the corridor. Why wouldn't Hannah come? She was so angry at Mia that she had trouble keeping her temper.

"If I did-"

"I know you lied," Willa interrupted, and Mia fell silent. "I know all about your former pack and what happened there. I know who you are. Once Hannah gets back, I'll tell her everything."

Mia's face paled.

"It's—it's not what you think," she stammered. "I can explain. Whatever you heard, that's not what happened, I swear."

Willa's brow rose. "Well then, Hannah and I will be the judges of that."
