Chapter 164

HANNAH

But the girl had already moved to Chase and Jace with her arms spread wide and that bright smile still on her face. I was pretty sure she had heard Cade's question but she was pretending not to have heard.

She leaned in to hug Jace. Jace took a step back. She touched only air. Jace gave her a faint smile. Chase kept his distance, gave her a little wave.

"Hello Sophie," he said. "We weren't expecting to see you. I'm surprised you are here."

"I missed you all," she said happily. "It's been ages since I set my eyes on any of you so I just had to come. Oh all right," she said when the triplets still looked like they were expecting an answer to Cade's question. "I heard about the war, volunteered to come with members of my pack." She jutted her chin in the direction of the car she had come out of. Several other people were getting out now. "I wanted to personally offer my support to your pack. You know I'll always be on your side no matter what."

Finally some part of her must have noticed the glares I wasn't even trying to hide.

Her eyes grew hooded. Her smile got a little colder as she said to me, "And who are you?"

Who was I? How dare she question me when she was the one who ought to have properly introduced herself?

Cade's shoulder lightly bumped mine.

"Her name is Hannah Baker," he said. "She's our mate."

As the girl's smile disappeared, her eyes widened in shock. She looked, really looked at me now from head to toe with a hint of condescension in her stare.

"That's nice," she said coldly and promptly turned to Cade. "Will you show me around later?"

"Sorry but I have important things to do today," Cade replied. "You can get settled in with the rest of your pack. The servants will make sure you have everything you need."

"Cade, let's go," I said, seeing Sophie was about to speak again. "I think we're about done here. Almost everyone's inside."

Cade thankfully didn't argue. Neither did the others.

"I'll see you three later," Sophie called after us.

I bit back angry words and forced myself to keep walking. The moment we were inside the house, out of earshot of everyone else, I rounded on my mates.

"Okay. Someone had better start talking now," I said, stamping my foot impatiently. "Who is that girl and why is she acting all familiar with all of you?"

For some reason, Chase and Jace were staring at Cade who was looking uncomfortable.

"Why don't you explain it to her, Cade?" Jace said dryly. "Tell her all about Sophie. After all she's your problem."

"My problem?" Cade said heatedly. "How is she my problem?"

"But she is," Jace insisted. "You brought her into our lives. You got her obsessed with us."

My voice shot up. "Obsessed? Who is she? Can somebody please say something I can understand?"

Chase flapped a hand in Cade's direction. Cade swore under his breath.

"Sophie was my ex," he said. "We went to school together. We dated for a while. We broke up. That's all there is to it."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "How about the obsession part?"

"Sophie was obsessed," Jace explained. "She was clingy. She was-"

"Slightly crazy?" Chase offered.

"Well yeah. She acted like it sometimes. She was kind of like some sort of stalker that wouldn't stay away from us for even a second. Even though we all dated her, she was in lot with Cade."

In love with Cade! Obviously Sophie's love was not in the past tense. From what I had seen, she was still into Cade.

"I see," I said slowly. "So what is she really doing here? What?"

"I swear I don't know," Cade said. "I didn't invite her. Had no idea she was coming. I was just as surprised as you all were."

"I can make a guess," Jace said with a frown. "She must have heard about what's happening, the war and all. She decided to use the opportunity to invade our lives. Again."

"True," Chase muttered

"You have to keep her out of our lives," I told Cade. "I have quite enough on my plate without having to worry about her too."

Cade said, "She won't be a problem. I promise."

I scowled at the slight smear of lipstick on his chin, a spot he had missed. The sight sent my anger surging again.

He had said Sophie wouldn't be a problem. She was already a problem now and she hadn't even been ten minutes in the house.

I stormed off and headed for Willa's room. I had to tell her about this Sophie.
