Chapter 187

HANNAH

The banner had been hung in the hallway, so big it was the first thing you saw the moment you stepped through the doors of the school.

Written on it in bold red letters on a white background were the words; ROSES ARE RED. VIOLETS ARE BLUE. DAWSON EATS SHIT AND SO DO YOU.

After the last word was a squiggly arrow that pointed to a cartoon character, all wide staring eyes and idiot loopy grin and yet the likeness to Asher was unmistakable.

For a moment, Willa and I stood there, half in and half out the door as students passed us. Then Willa collapsed against me, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

"Who drew that?" she said, now screaming with laughter and pointing.

"An artist, that's who," I said with a grin.

"Oh. This needs to be framed and put in some sort of museum." We continued walking. After a while Willa said musingly, "You know, if that stuff has been put out there just a few weeks ago, there would have been-"

"Chaos. I know. Dawson's hold on everyone was fear. Now he's gone, people are really showing how they felt about him."

Willa snorted. "Most of them are cowards if you ask me. If you hadn't stood up to him and started all these, almost everyone here would still have been kissing Asher's ass."

Willa was right but I didn't blame the people who hadn't spoken up before now. Not really.

I knew how it felt to be so frightened you would die if you so much as thought something bad about Asher and Dawson. Hadn't I once gone back voluntarily to Asher because of a threat?

Thoughts about Asher and Dawson went right out of my head as I noticed a lot of faces I couldn't remember ever seeing in school before. I turned to Willa, and noticed that she too was eyeing them with interest.

"Is it just me or are there lots of new students here this morning?" I said.

"Yeah. One of my friends texted me yesterday. She told some students from other packs will be writing their final exams at our school." She lowered her voice and an anxious note crept into it. "I wonder if I'll find... the one among them. If it's someone who attends our school, I would have run into him long ago."

"What do mean?"

She bit her lip.

"My mate," she explained. "If I were to ever have one, shouldn't I have seen him by now? I won't lie, Hannah. Sometimes it worries me. I-"

"Boo!"

I started and bumped into Willa. Whirling around I found Jace grinning at me. I punched him on the shoulder and he just kept grinning.

"What did you do that for?" I said, pressing a hand against my chest. I could feel my heart racing there. "You scared the shit out of me."

Jace kept grinning unapologetically. "Which was exactly my intention."

Willa rolled her eyes then quickly danced out of her brother's reach when he started ruffling her perfectly styled hair.

"Why are you here?" Willa asked from a safe distance. "Don't you have classes this morning?"

"I do but I came to check up on you two." Jace glanced at me. "Also I came to tell you that you have a visitor-" He jerked a thumb in the direction of the entrance. "-waiting for you outside."

"A visitor?" I asked, surprised.

"Yup. It's your dad. Says he wants to see you now."

I blinked, confused. "But- but we spoke this morning. He didn't say anything about coming to see me in school. Wait a minute. Is there a problem? Is that why he's here."

Jace tapped the corner of his lip. "I'm smiling, Hannah in case you haven't noticed. Would I be doing that if there was a problem?"

Willa narrowed her eyes at him. "It's not really her father out there, is it?"

Jace fought to keep a straight face. He failed and then laughed.

Willa murmured, "I told you so."

"Busted!" Jace exclaimed. "Sometimes I think you know me too well for your own good, Willa. Okay fine. I was joking. You do have a visitor but it's not your father. It's Edward."

"Edward!" I exclaimed.

I found it difficult to believe this one. I supposed I could reasonably expect my father to show up but Edward... Why wasn't Jace pissed at the idea that Edward wanted to see me?

Last time I checked, none of my mates got along with him. Though I supposed that had changed a little after Edward had helped them rescue me from Dawson.

"Yup," Jace said again. "It's Edward. He's at the parking lot, waiting. Come on. I'm telling the truth this time. Let me take you to him."
