Chapter 039

HANNAH

"Yes," I squeaked and he let go of my hair so suddenly I almost fell over. "Now get going before I teach you a lesson you'll never forget."

On slightly shaky legs, I headed for the triplet's table. Behind me, I could feel Asher's eyes boring into my back. I wondered what he had written in the note. Something insultive no doubt. But what was it?
It felt like for every step I took, the distance between me and the triplet's table increased. I forced myself to keep putting one leg in front of the other until I came to a stop at their table. Their conversation ceased immediately and three pairs of identical blue eyes fixed themselves on me. I could feel the hostility coming off them.

"I..." I closed my mouth, opened it again, but no other words came out. This was going to be harder than I thought. I cleared my throat. "I'm sorry for coming here like this but... Asher gave me a note to give to you."

When no one made a move to take it, I dropped it on the table, turned to leave before Asher took it into his head to come here and cause a scene. Now there was no principal to prevent the triplets from getting into trouble. One of them grabbed my hand. It was Jace.

In his eyes was a pleading look that broke my heart. His brothers moved uneasily in their seats.

"Jace," I murmured.

"Hannah," he said. "I don't know why you did what you did or why you chose him instead of us, but it's not too late to back out now. Choose us. We'll take care of you more than that animal ever could."
He had dropped his stoic mask. His voice reverberated the earnestness of his words.

Chase pounded the table. "For heaven's sake, Jace! What is your problem. Let this go, will you?"

"She made her decision," Cade said, shooting me a glare. "Let her live with it. She knew Asher was a lunatic but still chose him. I say she’s enjoying this.”

Still, Jace's hands were wrapped around my wrist. I couldn't find it in me to pull away. I didn’t want to. I wanted him to take my hands and lead me to a far away place. Some place I would never have to see Asher.

Chase swore. "If you don't let her go right now, I swear I'll tell dad how you made a fool out of yourself in school." He looked around uneasily. "For goodness sake, people are watching!"

At the mention of his father, Jace reluctantly let go of my hand. There were so many things I wanted to say to him, to them, like how I would give anything to be theirs. But I couldn't. So half blinded by tears, I stumbled away and soon found myself in front of Asher's table. With every fibre of my being, I wished I could just die instead of suffering like this.

Asher merely glanced at me and went on eating the food someone had brought for him. He looked so content, like the cat that had got the cream. When he was done, before I went to my class, I escorted him to his class and arranged his books. He seemed to be enjoying the way everyone was staring at him, and wondering why I was following him around like a dummy.

He flicked a hand lazily in my direction. "Get out. Make sure you aren't late back here when classes are over."

I nodded and left, already looking forward to the few hours in class where I wouldn't see Asher.

But my problems that morning were far from over. I had been walking with my head down. So I was too late to see Julia standing in my path. I froze in my tracks, and briefly considered taking another route. If there was one thing I was sure of, Julia meant trouble.

"Don't even think of scurrying away, you rat," Julia said as she walked up to me. She proceeded to circle me slowly. "Again, you're back to following Asher around. Of course, I knew your little display with those triplets wouldn’t last.”

'Not by choice', I wanted to shout but I held my tongue. I would most likely get slapped if I so much as talked back at her.

"You hide it well, but I'm sure you're already having fantasies of both of you ending up together. Newsflash, Hannah! Asher is mine. I'm warning you... don't do anything funny like trying to take him away from me. Don't even think about it else it will be the last thing you ever do. You know what you are? Answer me!"

"Yes," I said.

"You are just his maid and you must remain one."
