Chapter 110
HANNAH
"Want me to explain? Well, too bad. You're not going to get an answer. I'm not under any obligation to answer any of your questions!” I yelled, anger coursing through me again. If there was anyone I badly wanted to hurt, it was Dawson.
He opened his mouth to ask another question. I shook my head. Dawson wouldn't be the one calling the shots and dominating conversations. Not anymore.
I jerked my chin in the direction of Julia's body. Some guards had come with a stretcher and a sheet to take her away. "Julia is dead because of you. Her blood is on your hands. Tell me... how does that make you feel?"
A low growl ripped out from between his teeth.
"You lied," he said. "You hid your abilities. You didn't tell anyone you are a white wolf."
I saw Cade sharply look in my direction. I nodded to show him I had everything under control.
"And why does that matter now?" I asked Dawson. "If you knew what I could do and what I was, would that have stopped you from setting me up? Would that have stopped you from trying to kill me?"
I saw Dawson hesitate, then give me a look of surprise. A moment later, I knew why. Edward had finished speaking with the guards examining Julia's body and had moved closer.
"You keep saying that," Dawson said. "I've told you I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't set you up. Your father had the same delusional thought.”
I knew what he was playing at. He was trying to manipulate my emotions but I could see through him so clearly.
As I opened my mouth to give him a befitting response, Chase’s finger lifted.
"That's Willa!" He explained.
Sure enough, Willa, looking very disheveled, was running towards us from the other part of the arena as fast as her legs could carry her. She stopped in front of me and bent over, panting.
In the whirl of events that had kept happening one after the other, none of us had remembered her.
Cade slipped his hand around her waist, propping her up. She sagged against him.
"What happened, Willa?" I asked her. "You just... vanished. I was worried."
"I..." She swallowed, took in a deep breath, and tried again. "I went to use the restroom. Someone was there. I didn't see who. They knocked me out with something. They tried to take me far away from here, but I regained consciousness and escaped. Then I heard people talking about what just happened."
"It was all part of their plan," I said as loudly as I could. I met Edward's eyes. "I was watching the duel after Willa went to the restroom. A boy came and told me Willa needed my help.”
"We will not listen to any more of your lies!" Dawson roared. “You killed a girl, and I demand justice!”
Edward silenced him with a wave of his hand and urged me to continue.
"When I got there, I saw a bloody knife in the sink. Then Julia came in. She was already bleeding from the arm. She screamed. Right on cue, his son and some guards rushed in and grabbed me."
"Lies! All lies!" Dawson yelled. “It seems it runs your family. I should have banished you with your father!”
All pretense of control was gone now. His eyes were almost bugging out of his head. In contrast, I felt strangely calm, though I had a feeling every emotion I was supposed to feel would come surging back the moment I was left alone.
Dawson jabbed an accusing finger at me. "You wanted to kill Julia. You almost even succeeded once. Do you deny it? Do you?"
"No. But it was only because she was about to kill me first." I let a smile tease the corner of my lips. "You overplayed your hand this time, don't you think? Who proposed the blood duel? You. Julia was just the one parroting your schemes. Now you've gotten her killed." I turned to Edward. "You have heard the truth. It's left for you now to judge this matter. But I would like to make something clear. I don't regret killing Julia because she deserved it, and I will kill anyone who tries to tarnish I or my father's name."
“You see? She’s a lunatic!” Dawson yelled. “I want justice!”
Edward nodded and turned to Dawson.
"I don't see what you're so upset about, Dawson," he said. "Julia challenged Hannah. She lost. That is the end of it. There’s no justice for you. I asked for the matter to be settled in a more civilized manner, but you insisted on following the law. Why? Maybe because, like Hannah said, this was a plan. A plan that failed because she hid her identity from you all. Go home and mourn your dead. They will be no justice.”
"You're making the wrong decision," Dawson insisted. "Hannah should be arrested for questioning."
"Ah. And what exactly is her offence?" Cade asked.
Dawson stared. He obviously didn't have an answer to that one.
Cade nodded.
"That's what I thought," he said.
I took a step closer to Dawson, who was now purple with rage. “You’ve failed again. It really runs in the blood. A failure just like his son.”
