Chapter 151
HANNAH
Asher continued. "With that much power flowing through my veins, I'll be invicible. Want to know the first thing I'll do? I'll finish off your mates, your slut of a mother and then if I have time, I'll hunt your traitor father down and finish him off too. I'll end the Bakers and all that stand with them."
He stalked out of the room. Mia started to follow.
"Mia!" I called out. She stopped in her tracks. "Why are you doing this?"
She shook her head. "Oh please don't, Hannah. You're embarrassing yourself. Trying to emotionally blackmail me won't work. I have zero feelings. And emotions."
"But I was your friend! I was nice to you. I-"
Mia rolled her eyes. "Spare me that sentimental crap. You didn't like me, not really. You were just desperate to be with someone as traumatized as you were. I read about something like that in a textbook at your shitty school." She sunk her voice into a whisper. "It's called trauma bonding, stupid."
"I-"
Mia interrupted again. "Even if you genuinely liked me, then you're more stupid than I thought. Willa was the smart one, always watching me, always on her guard, never trusting. The bitch finally found the truth. I had to silence her so she wouldn't ruin my plans."
"You won't get away with this," I threatened, knowing it was useless now to beg. "Maybe you don't know but everyone Asher has used to try to get to me has ended up dying. Mark my words, you'll die too if you keep on with this."
Mia pressed her hands against her bosom. "Your concern is touching but you should worry about yourself first... white wolf."
She left. The sound of the closing door and the key turning in the lock was like the sound of my fate being sealed.
**********
JACE
I kept scrubbing my hands over my face to keep back the darkness. The drug, whatever it was, was still in my system.
I swore.
How stupid could I get?
I should have been more careful, more vigilant but like a fool I had knocked myself out for hours!
Cade's hand fell on my shoulder. "It's not your fault, Jace. You couldn't have known the champagne was drugged."
"Couldn't I? How many times did we talk about closely monitoring the food and drinks? And then I go ahead to take what had to be the only drugged thing at the party! Damn! I'm such a fool!"
"Stop beating up yourself about it! That girl... Mia, she was pretending to be Hannah's friend all along. She must have been planning this for ages."
"How could she have poisoned the drink?" Chase asked. "We were all there."
"Easy enough to slip something into the glass when she was giving it to Hannah," I said. "No wonder she looked so worried when I drank it instead. I thought it was odd. I should have paid more attention to my instincts."
"This is no time to play the blame game," Chase said sharply. "The question now is how do we find Hannah?"
None of us had any ideas.
I hoped my father was happy now. It was idea to continue with this stupid ball. Now Hannah was gone and even though he had caused all this, he was nowhere to be found.
"Did something happen?"
My brothers and I all froze for a beat and then we were running to our sister who had just come into the room. I was the last to get to her and hug her. The ground still kept shifting, making me unsteady on my feet.
She bore our embraces for two seconds then struggled out of it.
"Willa," I said. "When-"
"Hannah," she said, pushing past me so she could look around the room. "Where is she? Tell me she's alright."
"She's was kidnapped last night," Cade said, sounding as hollow as I felt.
Willa started to sit but ended up plopping down on the bed. Her face worked but she managed to say, "How?"
I told her everything.
"All we know is that Mia was the mole. We still don't know who she is working for or why she did what she did," Cade said.
Chase shoved his fingers through his hair. "What kills me is Hannah could have been abducted by anyone. Anyone! We have practically the whole territory trying to hunt her down. Where the fuck are we supposed to look now?"
"I knew about Mia," Willa said slowly. "I had just found out and was waiting for Hannah to come home so I could tell her. I wish I had called and told her about it..."
I went on one knee in front of my sister and gripped her forearms. "Mia. Who is she?"
"A traitor," Willa said bitterly and before I could ask the next question, she said, "She works for Asher."
