Chapter 102

HANNAH

"Jace-" Willa began.

"Stay out of this," Jace warned her.

Willa rolled her eyes. She mimed, zipping her mouth shut. As she walked past me to sit in the car, she gave my arm a reassuring squeeze.

I looked around at the other two, as still as statues, in disbelief. "Seriously? I don't get to explain? It's totally unfair that you want to believe the rumors instead of me. I thought we had something called trust. If the tables were turned, I would want to hear what you have to sa-"

"It's obviously more than a rumor," Jace interrupted. "Everybody is talking about it, and everybody can't be wrong. Someone obviously saw you and the prince making out."

"But-"

Cade threw the passenger door of the car open. "Not another word out of you, Hannah. Just get in the car. Now."

I was also getting really angry. I had known they were prone to overreacting, but not listening to my side of the story? That was annoying and unfair, and-

Cade shook the door.

I stomped past Chase and Jace and got in beside Willa. Cade slammed the door so hard the car rocked a little. I knew they had a right to be angry, but believing everyone else instead of me was just hurtful.

They were about to get in the car when I noticed Cade suddenly stiffen. He was staring at someone approaching.

It was Edward. The next instant, Cade was running towards him.

"Cade! No!" I screamed, jerking the door open and scrambling out.

Chase and Jace sprinted after their brother. Just before Cade got to Edward, the others collided with him with a sound like a small explosion. Then they were dragging a snarling and struggling Cade back.

Edward, unruffled, waved his guards away. They reluctantly stepped a few paces back but kept a wary eye on Cade, who looked like a very rogue wolf as he struggled with his brothers.

"How dare you touch her, asshole?" Cade growled. "Let go of me! Let me at him!"

Chase glared at the prince. He was whispering something quickly to Cade. Cade didn't seem to be listening. He had eyes only for Edward

Willa and I had gotten out of the car. I didn't get too close. Seeing me near Edward could set any of my mates off.

I was so anxious I even forgot to be embarrassed about the students watching the scene from a safe distance.

"I didn't come to fight," Edward said quietly.

"Then what the hell do you want?" Chase asked. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Edward glanced at me. "Just to clear the air."

"You're not allowed to look at her!" Jace said.

"Fine. Then listen. In the library, I tried to kiss Hannah. Tried to," he added when the brothers all growled. "She didn't let me. She told me she had already been mated and marked by you three, I'm guessing."

Cade flexed his muscles, and Chase grabbed his arm.

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?" Cade asked. “Do you think my anger is directed at her?”

Edward raised one shoulder in a shrug. "I told you the truth. It's left for you to do what you want with it." After a beat, he chuckled. "She wasn't exaggerating. She said you would all rip me to pieces if I kissed her, that it didn't matter if I was the prince, a fact that in your anger you seem to have forgotten."

"I also wouldn't care if you were the king," Cade bit off.

"Yes. I can see that. You three have someone really special as a mate. Hannah is a treasure. It's good that you know her worth."

I saw the fight slowly leave Cade. His brothers let go of him. Willa squeezed my hand, and I released a breath I didn't know I was holding.

The worst was over. They weren't going to fight.

"No fight," Willa murmured breathlessly.

Edward heard her. The corners of his lips curled into a half-amused, half-mocking smile. He took his time looking Cade over.

Finally, he said, "If it had come down to a fight, you wouldn't have lasted a minute against me. But I'm not the kind of guy that goes about picking fights. Besides..." He looked at me with that same devotion I had seen in his eyes right before he kissed me. The triplets moved restlessly. He snapped his eyes back to them. "...if Hannah had been my mate, I probably would have acted like you did."

Edward confidently closed the gap between him and the triplets. I held my breath.

He tapped Cade on the shoulder in a friendly sort of way.

"Good luck." Then he turned his gaze to me and said, "Bye, Hannah. I hope I see you again."
