Chapter 46
The next day a she-wolf about my age burst through my door carrying a small pup in her arms. “get up we have lots to do and jazz gets out of school at noon.” I can't tell if she's a morning person or not. Looking at myself I slowly slide from the bed. “well I hope this is okay it's all I have.” I shrug. I left everything at the castle with my bank card money and id. I have nothing to my name. I will ask to use a computer to have my bank account address changed and a new card sent here. It's an account I set up and have been using for the last year. Looking at the she-wolf “if I could use a phone I can have a new bank card sent here so I can pay back whatever is used on me. Also, do you know if anyone in the closest human town is hiring? Soon as I get a job I can be out of your alpha hair.” ringing my fingers together. Over the last year, I have developed a bit of an anxiety problem. Not having my wolf has made me a bit jumpy. Tilting her head looking me over. Her eyes glaze over for a few minutes. “there will be shoes upstairs for you to use. Let's get going the walls have ears heard.” she shrugs. Shrugging back as I don’t care what they ask me I will tell them everything I know.
Following her, to the elevator, she pushes a button that just has a G on it. I am going got assume it means ground floor. Staring at the panel I see several buttons are telling me there are several floors. “why are they color-coded?” I ask quietly “oh the elevators go to certain floors making the ride faster.” she shrugs. Doing the math in my head trying to get a handle on how big this packhouse is. But then I remind myself that just because there are several rooms on the floor I am staying on does not mean all the floors have that many rooms. But what I can see is this is not a small pack at all. By the looks of the members, I have seen so far this is a well-off pack. Why does everyone think they are poor and small?
The doors open to the brightly lit top floor. Or well the floor under the first floor. I am going to have to ask how this works. How do they not get lost? Following her across the floor an older she-wolf comes up and talks the pup from her. “miss Skylar takes your time to enjoy some pup free time today I will pick up the hell hound from school today.” I gasp at the name looking between them they both laugh. Noticing my face they laugh even more. “if you met jazz you will know fast that is an appropriate nickname for her. We are all thankful she cant shift at six.” they both start laughing more. The she-wolf leaves us heading to another elevator. Making it to the stairs I can see the light shining bright down the stairs. Growing brighter as we make our way up. The whole floor was full of the bright morning sunlight. Several walls on the back of the house are nothing but glass. Through them, I see breathtaking farm lands. Off to the left, I see cows and horses with babies grazing. It's like walking into the most peaceful picture you could find.
With a small nudge, I head to the front door that is now wide open. Now noticing no pups are running around but they have them she talked about them. I will ask her all my questions in the car. Finding a pair of flip-flops at the front door I slip them on groaning to myself. I had never in my life ever wanted to wear a pair of these. But after a few steps, I finally see the appeal they are like walking on a cloud. Following Skylar, to her car, she clicks the button to open the doors. Sliding in and buckling up. Skylar starts the car and puts it in gear. “coffee?” a moan leaves my throat on its own causing me to cover my mouth. She chuckles “ill take that as a yes.” my father and brother brought me back almost a week ago and put me on this crappy diet that involves no caffeine.
Stopped at a little travel coffee shop halfway down the driveway. She orders something to wake me up and I ask for something hot with caramel and chocolate. The strong scent of coffee danced out of their window and through the car. Moaning at the smell. My shoulders relaxed just from the smell. It wasn’t too much longer before she was handing me the hot cup. Taking a sip sighing out as the warmth traveled through me.
After a few minutes of silence she begins. “as you know my name is Skylar smith but I was born Skylar black.” I nod because I did know she was the betas sister. She had been back up beta there for we had a file on her as well cause the first born is mated to an alpha or killed. She counties “my job is to get answers. Normally in a not-so-nice way. Let's make a deal you tell me everything I want to know honestly and we will remain friends.” I nod I have nothing to hide.
“what can you tell me about the contracts with the packs and your pack?”
“honestly nothing I was never allowed to anything to do with pack business as I was to be the betas mate nothing more.”
“what magic is being used at the castle?”
“oh, the father has this bond transfer spell. Once you cross through the door of your assigned room. Your pack bond temporarily transfers to the winter's pack minus the mind link.” I shrug
“what other spells or magic?”
Confused I look at her “well sometimes my brother used my grandmother's love mist. I have seen the girls before it wears off I don’t recommend it if you want them to remember things.” Shrugging thinking hard for a few more moments before I begin again “well we have some affinity to things our namesake had. And we share some personality traits. Is that what you mean?”
“no and ill ask about that later but no. There is a lot of magic around the winter land its thick in the air.”Skylar asked shock running through my body trying hard to think of anything I had overlooked. Trying hard to remember things but I can't remember anything past eight.
“is there a way to find out who cast the magic?” I ask if I can still cross the border by granting permission to not trip the alarms. So if needed I can still help somehow.
“yes and no. If we knew what or who cast it would be easier. If we knew what spells it would be easier. Why do the winters not train warriors and use other packs for that?”
“no clue I was kept out of pack business. Sent to boarding school and kept on my wing of the castle. I could tell you that the kitchen makes roast on Sundays so I order pizza. Anything to do with the pack I don’t know. And for the last year, I was living in a human town hiding from a very confusing situation.”
“and that was?”
“Can we skip this?” I ask pleading in my voice. With a shake of her head I sign dropping my shoulders. “on my 18th birthday I found my mate. Or I thought I had. The room filled with his scent making my mouth water. But true to tradition I was not to be marked and mated before my mate finished the four years at the academy. But then three years later a fog lifts from my eyes and I see a god. And the bond is so strong then I was confused cause I could no longer feel my other bond. I didn’t know what was going on or what was true. I rejected Samuels and ran. I ran from the pack hiding in a human town. Blending in as my wolf left me. I am nothing more than a human now. So that is why I ran but then father found me and had me brought back to be mated to the guy I had thought was my mate.” trying to hold back the tears.
