Fallen pov
It wasn’t until about a week later that I saw Kai again. He has started to fill back out. He almost glows with how pale he is. Max was taking me for a walk outside in the grass. He told me there was a swimming pond nearby and was taking me to see it. If it wasn’t for Kai's paleness and soft glow I wouldn’t have been able to pick him out from the teenagers in the field. “What are they doing?” Max looks to where I’m pointing. “that’s an alfalfa field. It’s cut, dried, and baled. Then it will be gathered and stored to be mixed with the feed for the winter bales. The animals are on pasture summer and fall but winter and spring pastures are pretty dry. So we developed a feed ratio that works best for us. It also gives room to adjust one or more parts as needed to supplement.” He tells me.
“So everyone works around here? Why is Kai down there? Shouldn’t he be resting he was in really bad shape?” I ask but I can see he looks better already. “no clue. If you want we can go down and ask him” he offers and I agree right away. As much as I have been enjoying my new mate I have missed my best friend. Pulling for max to hurry he started to go slower. Yanking on his arm trying to pull this big lug around he starts chuckling. Ugh fine. Dropping his hand I start running. The grass is both soft and poky. The smells of everything were sweet and then yucky. Coughing I stop running gagging on the smell. What is that? Dropping to my knees hunched over my arms wrapped around my stomach.
Max drops next to me “moonlight are you okay? What happened?” the worry heavy in his voice. “what…cough gag cough….is that smell?” scrunching up my nose. He takes in a deep breath. “I don’t smell anything out of the ordinary. Can you describe it?” bulking at what he said nothing out of the ordinary. “it smells like this all the time? How do you live?” “they don’t have our noses, Len. But ya what’s that smell? New shampoo? I thought you said coconut was the only scent that didn’t kill you?” Kai's deep husky voice dances on the wind next to me. Looked up at him confused. “huh? This smell is not me fucktard.” Glaring at my old best friend. Laughing holding his hands up “no, no Len two different smells. The sour death you smell is cow shit. There’s a lot in the milking barn down that way.-he points to the left where I see a giant steel building- but the smell I was talking about is” he takes a big sniff “snow the beta mixed with yours. I know is cut grass very fitting if you ask me. But I also smell winter pine and -sniff, sniff- something almost like honey or maple.” Tilting his head. “not horrible scent combination just not it would be a balanced mix you know?” “no I have no fucking clue what you're talking about. Winter pine do you see a winter pine anywhere? And honey really are you forgetting I’m allergic to honey blow up like a three-week-old dead seal about to explode? Oh but it’s so sweet and good. But not the point why would I use anything with honey?” “your not allergic to honey Len your allergic to the stuff that makes it below freezing stable. And it’s a bear thing dork you’re the one that showed me how to get Matt back for sealing my cookies?” he glares back at me.
Max falls back laughing so hard his face is red. “what's wrong with your mate?” Kai asks “no clue. He was fine a second a go.” “hope you kept the receipt I think he’s broken.” He chuckles max howls in laughter. “stop, stop you two are too much. And oh holy goddess if you are not perfect for Enoy. Both are touchy about your sweets.” Leaning up to lean on his arms he’s half sitting half laying down. Kai’s race instantly goes red even the tips of his ears.
“why are you out here working? Shouldn’t you be resting?” I ask I mean it’s the whole reason I came down here and almost died. “commander Michael..” “what? No. Please tell me you did not call him that to his face?” max practically yells at Kai sitting all the way up. Tilting our heads looking at max “why wouldn’t I? I mean I thought everyone here was trained and raised to respect your teachers and elders?” Kai was confused. Huffing max sits back “ya we are but Michael is not any ordinary wolf. I knew you’d been training with him. He already had a big head you know getting the girl he’s pined for literally years and making a baby right away. He hasn’t had this much control over his wolf ever. Didn’t want to give him a bigger ego is all.”
Giggling so hard I had to take a big breath…gag, cough, gag bad idea no laughing or breathing out here. Jumping up “well come see me when your done let’s have midday together.” Not giving him a chance to reply I start running back to the house. Nope, not a cowgirl nope nope nope. “go get checked for your smelling funny.” Throwing three fingers up over my head as I run up the hill. I feel him trying to link me but I blocked him and max both. Jerks.
Making it inside I slam into a wall. Strong hands grab my arms steadying me. “hey now where’s the fire?” the alpha booms a chuckle in his tone. “sorry alpha I didn’t see you there.” Groaning “not you too. My family and the black have been friends not family for a long time. So since that makes you family by association no alpha business unless it’s actually alpha business.” Arching his brow in question. His silver eyes were so open and honest. I can’t help but smile and nod. “so where were you off to in such a hurry?” “well max was gonna take me to the swimming pond but I saw Kai working in the field. So we went over to see him and ask him why he was already doing heavy work. But the jerk said I smell funny then said I smelled like things I couldn’t just to be a meanie jerk face.” Covering my mouth cutting myself off from my fit. What did the alpha do you might ask. Well, I’ll tell you.
