Chapter 21
Following the scent to an even strong smell of decay. Death hangs heavy in this area. “Ethan do you know whose land this is?” “no alpha. If my direction is right it's neutral land.” so no packs here “keep your guard up then rogues could be close. Hiding behind the smell of death.” he nods as we creep. I should have been watching where I was stepping but I was too busy looking around trying to find the source. That’s how I ended up in a pit of dead bodies.
Jumping back trying to get up and out of the pit, panic made its way through my body. That’s when I hear a faint moan. Snapping my head back. “did you hear that?” I link Ethan. He doesn't answer as he is staring behind me. Shifting I crawl along the bodies looking for the who or what is making that noise. It's so faint I almost think I am just hearing things. “I linked for someone to come with rope and a map.” he says in link cutting off as I hear him shift back. “also told them to bring warriors and a recovery team for several bodies,” he tells me slipping on his shorts before jumping down in the pit with me.
I am noticing a lot of younger bodies here. A few pups. The smell is so strong it overwhelms my nose. All I can smell is death I can't tell what these bodies are. Human, shifter, or another supernatural being? That’s a question the doctors will have to answer. But one thing is for sure this is not a new pit I see down through some of the limbs. There is nothing but bones under it. If it wasn’t for the fact I had to get very close to it before I started smelling the decay, makes me think this area is spelled to contain the scent. Someone had a good plan at some point. If it had not been for that bit of sweet smell that drew me here I would not have found this.
My hand goes through a girl's abdomen landing on a body under it. I heard the groan at that same time. Pulling my melted human body-covered hand back I carefully pull the body back to see the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen. fear now perfuming the air along with death. I don’t want her afraid of me. Moving back a little “I’m not here to hurt you. I want to help you. Can you talk?” I know I should have been asking one thing at a time but I couldn’t stop myself. She nods but says nothing so I try again “I’m William I think I smelled you then I heard you I want to help you can you move. I don’t want to scare you so I won't touch you unless you need me to.” I tell her holding my hands up showing I mean no harm. When she shakes her head I want to scream at who did this to her. My heartbreaking as I look at her. “can I help pull you out of this whole so I can get your injuries treated and maybe something to eat?” still keeping my distance letting her make the discussions. She starts to nod when Ethan calls out “alpha there are so many children here could some of them be missing from a few years ago?” she shrinks back. Holding my finger up to her I reply to him “we won't know until the doctors check them out. Find a way out of this pit.” my eyes never leaving hers as they widen. Now realizing I am an alpha she shrinks back more. “I promise not to hurt you. I promise once your all healed and better to help find your family.” she starts shaking like a leaf. Her eyes tearing up “okay or not look for your family? I'm gonna need you to talk to me sweetheart or I can't help you.” she just stares at me “how about we start with getting out of here one step at a time?” holding my hand our to her and wait.
Grabbing my hand I can feel the bones shes a living skeleton. But I can also feel light tingles where her skin is touching mine. Our eyes snapped to each other. More determined to get her out here than before. Pulling her close to me wrapping her up in my arms. Making my way to the side of the pit. Breathing hard just holding her to me whispering “things will be okay. It's okay I'm here now. I have you.” over and over to her. I can feel her crying into me as I hold her close to me.
Soon a rope is being lowered to me. tied it around her she has yep to let go of me. When I try and pull away so they can pull her up she clings harder on me. Gauging her weight and adding it to mine I figure they could pull us both up. Soon they are pulling me up she clings to me like a koala bear. I can feel she's using all her strength to cling to me. “I won't drop you I promise” I whisper to her. Takes a good ten minutes to get me out of the pit. Alpha Derick is there waiting when we make it out. “what happened alpha, William. Here I can take her.” he holds his arms out for her. Now out of the pit, I can smell her more and I know she's mine. And scared she shakes her head holding on tighter “no alpha Derick I have her. But I will take advantage of your medical center. Also, get a team here to pull them out so we can get them to their families. What had the other team found where they found my sister?” I asked her head snapping back staring at me wide-eyed. “sister?” she asked looking around “yes little one they found my sister around here a few days ago. Do you know anything about that?” tears now falling down her face as she nods, her crying becoming more of a hyperventilating “is …. is.. is she okay?” she asked shaking my head sadly “I tried I tried I tried I'm so sorry I tried.” she keeps repeating over and over.
