Chapter 41

Fallen pov

When Ambrose left and took gamma jasmine with him max started pushing the furniture around. He then pulled all the cushions off the couch and chairs laying them on the floor and covering them with blankets. He then made sure there was space between the two-floor beds he made. Taking the one with fewer cautions it was clear he wanted me to take the softer bed. I have to admit being able to sleep on something soft again is nice. So I settle in trying to steal glances at him as he works.

“Can I ask you something?” his husky voice breaks the silence. Even his voice makes me want to blush all over. But I nod. “why do we not feel hungry here I mean we've been here for a while and I have not eaten in a while?” I want to give him an answer but I don’t know. “since lord Loki and the alpha and his sister showed up I haven't been hungry and all food was taken to the main house for them. Only the cooks in the kitchen get to see the food.” I tell him. He just nods along watching me as I talk. The look in his eyes makes my whole body hot and my bear wants to grab a hold of him and never let go.

We spent hours just talking our fingers almost touching the cold floor. I wanted to throw myself at him so many times. But soon the need to sleep overruled my desire to stare and talk to max more. He fell asleep before me normal around here. I have had a hard time sleeping for months but his scent lulls me. I fight hard to stay awake and just watch him. I know it sounds creepy but it's not I swear. He is beyond what I thought was attractive in a male. When I was little I thought one day my prince will come and sweep me away take me away from the cold show me new and wonderful things. Then the twins showed up and the last year has been me trying to keep kai from leaving me too. I am the only polar bear left up here. The rest of the pack is made of several arctic breeds. This last month the twins overheard charlie talking to one of his crewmates about taking the last ship and heading around the dead sea in hopes of making it around and back down the coast to find the black rose. For as long as I could remember we stayed out of other packs' issues as we lived a simple life up here. Fishing and providing for not only our pack but the arctic sea fish for the Samuels corporation.

We are not fighters we are fishermen. The Samuels have always been a pack the alpha said we could count on in a time of need. But sadly for charlie Ren overheard it and alpha wren made an example of charlie snow. Kai is the last snow left up here as well. What they did to the Luna was horrible. Luna Ookpik was a small woman. Being an arctic fox even her shifted form was smaller than others. her brothers along with her father all worked on the fishing boats as did many of the men and women here. But Luna Ookpik was not just the Luna she was our healer as well. She was well loved as was alpha, Joel. They had the two older boys a year apart Jackson and my brother being two years apart. My brother Matt and Jackson had become best friends that day on the ship. Jackson and Matt never went anywhere without the other if I hadn't asked once I would have thought them mates. But no they were just that close. The day my brother found his mate we had a party the whole pack was there. Pinga was from a village to the southeast. Matt and Jackson had taken a large order of fish to the village for the first time. They had started taking over the alpha and beta duties. Pinga’s father owns the fish stand that they were delivering to. Unlike us Pinga is human but that didn’t matter to her or my brother. Up here everyone knows everyone and the village knows we are shifters. So when Matt rushed to her pinning her to the counter everyone just laugh ted and cheered. Her father was overjoyed to have his daughter mated to Matt. It thought of good fortune to mated to a shifter up here. Why? Well, simply means your bloodline is strengthened. But in Pinga case it mean she would be safe. several men had asked for her hand and she turned her nose up to all. That was until Matt pinned her. The whole village said for the first time Pinga melted and softened.

Matt and Pinga are gone now along with the cub she was carrying. My heart broke, even more, when they took Pinga’s life in front of Matt and me. I died that day myself or I almost died. Until max showed up I was only alive to keep kai alive. I had been looking for a way to save him and myself along with what is left of the pack. Now I have a new reason to live and he's laying across from me snoring. He sounds like a bear. The rumble in his chest was so close yet so far away. I want to lay my head on his chest and let the rumble lull me to sleep. But I will settle for listening from afar for now.

Waking before the sun stretching out and yawning. That was the shortest but best sleep I have had in a long time. Looking over I see max curled up in a ball with a tiny blanket on him. Looking down I see I now have all the blankets. Okay, this wolf is really making it hard to keep my hands off him. Slipping out of the blankets I carefully lay them over him. He starts sniffing in his sleep and pulling them around him making cute little moaning sounds. Not wanting to go but needing to I slip my outer sweater off and lay it next to him before I slip out the door. Being a bear born in the snow who lived her whole life in the snow. Snow does not affect me the way it does others. We bears are meant to live outside in the snow so we are built for it. Making my way to the outlook cabin as fast as I can I need to slip back into the main house to start my daily chores. The sooner things are done the sooner I can start packing and then make my way back to spend more time with Max. The second we got to their vans I could smell him. When he didn’t acknowledge me I was heartbroken at first. But silly me forgot that they wouldn't be able to smell past the frozen air as it mutes the scents up here. arctic breeds have a better sense of smell so we can smell through the frozen.

The second he called me, mate, and made it clear he refused to reject me he owned all of me.
