Chapter 28
Coming to laying on the couch I can see the shine of new light through the windows telling me it's morning. Waking to the sounds of Ambrose drilling fallen about things and what is going on with the cabin. “I can't wait to get out of this cabin to summon some cinnybonnies. What is everyone's favorite flavor?” he sings I do think his attitude is better than last night but when a tiny voice begins even I can't process it at first.
“oh, there is no magic here. And I can't leave the pack I won't leave kai. He's all I have left.” fallen cries. “whoever that is is not all you have left it's your leash child. You'll be safer with this lot I do believe.” Ambrose huffs out. “just because you don’t have any loyalty does not mean I don’t. I will not leave kai.” I can see the hurt on max’s face as he starts to pull away from her. The panic at his movements has her eyes snapping from Ambrose to Max. He's all stone-faced staring at the wall across the room as he slowly pulls away. her eyes snapping to him panic floods her. Her little hands grabbed his shirt almost clawing at him to bring him back to her. Even I am confused by this. If this dude is so important to her why is she fighting so hard to stay in max’s arms?
“why are you being so clingy to max if you only want this kai?” jasmine spits out Kaleb grabs her arm keeping her from attacking. Jasmine and max are the same age they would have been the same age, as Hermes had he not been killed. Not only did they grow up together and share birthdays jasmine is the only one who knows the pain of the broken bond they share. The bond they had with Hermes is different than the bond I have with them. Yes, we are close but those three were only minutes apart in age, and for two years spend every day together. So for her to see him hurt is not an option for her. Kaleb holds jasmine in place as I step between her and fallen. “I think you need to explain your relationship before my delta can no longer hold my gamma back.” I sneer. Her eyes get huge as she looks around.
“what do you mean?” she whispers out. “the one you won't leave who is he to you?” it was like a light bulb was switched on. “oh my no no kai he's my best friend. He's the alpha or was the alpha youngest? I don’t know where he is. They made us watch as they killed our fathers and brothers. Then they took him away and locked him up in one of the cells. I am only allowed out of a bound cabin because they know ill do what I am told so I can take kai food and clean clothes. If I don’t I will be locked up in either my bear on a leash or in my cabin. And they will take kai away or worse kill him. He's my best friend the only family I have left.” max having pulled her back had tears in his eyes listening to her.
“what do you mean locked in your bear?” Ambrose exclaims jumping from his chair. “well the pack is either locked in their cabin until the alpha needs them or they are locked in their shifted form and kept in kennels behind the main house.” she slowly gets out staring at her feet. Ambrose is so made he looks like a living fire pacing the small room. The black patterns look to be moving on him. His eyes were a bright hot firey orange white. I mean I think he could melt an iceberg in seconds he looks so hot. “how?” he growls. Not like a growl we wolves make or even the sounds of our dogs, it's more like a cross between a gator's hiss and a mountain cat's roar. The sound goes straight through me. The fear it instantly pulls from me I know is mirrored in everyone. I couldn’t speak if I wanted to for what it's worth she tried to look strong but I do not blame the slight shivering I see her doing. “they have a witch friend here who does what they want as long as he gets to do what he wants with some of the girls that are in the girl cabin for those too young to shift.”
The room is growling at the thought of what she just said. “who cares for the pups?” I barely get out in an even tone. I am not angry with her but I am on edge. Before she can reply her eyes glaze over and her body drops in defeat. With a nod her eyes clear. “I am to bring the alpha heir to the main house to speak with the alpha. Please follow me.” with one last look she steps away from max and heads to the door. Slipping shoes on we all follow behind. I was first to make it through the door followed by Fallen. Ambrose rushed but was bounced back. “what the fucking hell let me out of the fucking place right now I demand.” Ambrose is yelling rubbing his nose. Max tried to follow and could not cross the thresh hold. Looking at her in question “we should hurry before he sends his sister to get us she's nicer when he's around.” with a nod I look back shrugging and nodding to them. Following fallen to the house in the center of town. The closer we got the more my wolf was jumping around inside me. Praying to the goddess I can keep her under wraps.
Fallen opens the door to the main house and I am hit with the scent of fresh cinnybonnies. My eyes close and a moan leaves my throat on its own. Coming to a stop in the center of the entryway I feel a presence behind me. a warm body close to my back but not touching me. The scent of cinnybonnies is so strong around me now my mouth is watering.
“I knew you would be my mate” wrens nasally voice whispers out by my ear.
