Chapter 119

Maximus pov

Flying from the front of the pack house shifting as I leap from the porch. Landing in stride I head to the border. The howls and snapping in my chest tell me we are under attack. How did they get this far in the pack lands?

Breaking through the tree line the scent of rot and iron was heavy in the air. Changing direction as a wolf flies towards me slipping on the slick ground my legs give out. Landing hard on the muddy blood puddle. Rolling over coming face to face with the body of a warrior. His stomach ripped open his insides spilled to the ground.

Jumping up rushing over to the young wolf’s body spinning looking for the wolf that charged me. Finding her as she gets up shaking her head bearing her teeth. Her scent is familiar and different. I know I had smelled this scent before. But where? Shaking my head to clear my mind I lower my front end locking my back legs ready to spring at my enemy. Her teeth bared growling she paws the ground. The more of a show she puts on the less of a threat she becomes. The more she dances I can see how her muscles are reacting so when her hind legs made just the smallest of twitches. I knew she was about to attack. Waiting for the right moment.

She leaps and I shoot out snapping my jaws closed around her neck. Biting down hard as we crash to the ground. Her yelps of pain have me biting harder. Rolling to get up taking her fighting, all the way with me. She gets her paws under her trying to pull away. I yank back hard. When she pulls back I shake my head side to side fast. Her body leaving the ground just to slam down hard hitting it against the hard ground with each shake. The snap of her neck sent me into a freeze and I start grabbing her fur and skin pulling and yanking. The tearing sound spurs me on as her skin pulls from the muscles.

Ripping large chunks from her head and tossing them as they come away. Tearing her apart like a stuffed animal. Her blood covers not only the ground but my fur. Running off like water. Leaving little drops under me from where it’s dripping off the tips of my fur.

Turning from the she-wolf when she starts shifting back. Leaving her in a puddle of her own insides. Jumping over her heading for my next victim.

The ground was soaking wet with blood slipping in the mud falling hard on my side and covering me in the bloody mud. A horse howl comes from the south somewhere. The rouges start escaping. Trying to get up and run after them a cloud of dust covers the field. Sneezing when the dust landed on my nose. My legs started to wobble and feel like jelly. Five seconds later they gave out. Dropping hard to the ground. My jaw landed on a rock snapping it. I could feel the pain in my jaw. Taste the blood from the lesion where the bone shot through my gums and cheek. I can feel the blood dripping from my bottom lip.

I can feel the shift taking over as I lost connection with my wolf. What I could not do was move. I was glued to the ground, right where I landed. Blood spilled from my mouth cheek and nose. My eyes trying to focus but just can’t. Color blocks are all I can see right now. Trying to mind-link anything but I can’t. For the first time in my life, I was alone. I can’t feel my mate's or my son’s. I can’t feel the bonds between my pack, my family to my best friends.

Panic takes root as my heartbeat increases. The world around me goes cold in my panic as black dots dance around my vision. A loud earth-shaking howling scream comes from somewhere behind me. The sound is so full of pain that it breaks my heart. My heart speeds up and slows down as my vision goes in and out. Footsteps are all around me. Salt is filling my lungs why do I smell salt? Something touches my face pushing me around. What it is I can’t say. I know it’s there from the pressure but that’s it.

Cries and screams are sounds close to my ear. Whoever it is is in so much pain the clouds started weeping for them. I can hear the droplets of rain hitting the ground. The tree tips. The notes from the drops hit different surfaces. I hear rushed voices in hurried tones. The world twist and turns my stomach threaten to empty but my throat won’t budge. Breathing through choking on my own stomach acid. The parents from Charlie brown’s Halloween special start talking over me. It’s annoying not to understand what’s being said.

The iron soon fades from the air breaking away to the fresh scent of pine and a hint of cinnamon. Cinnamon? That was the scent that she-wolf smelled like cinnamon undertones. The same scent we all smell until Enoy is the alpha completely. Then we will smell vanilla. The Samuels all have some kind of food scent. They do like food so makes sense. Who was she though? Why did she smell like alpha Philip?

I feel cold under me as sobs fill the room around me. My heart jumped in my chest my arm jumped at the same time. “whaawhaawoohkkaawaaawaa” is in my ear. I want to speak but I can’t move my mouth. My jaw throbs in time with my heart a sharp strong shock flows through my chest followed by a buzzing. I pray to the goddess whatever that does not happen again.

Trying to open my eyes and I can’t. Trying to move my arms legs ears lips anything and nothing. The sobs around me are breaking my heart. With every fiber I have, I try moving. Clawing my way back to that sweet smell of morning fresh-cut grass. The scent washes over my body putting me at ease as the darkness pulls me under. My last thought is of how much I love fallen before I’m in a void of nothing.
