Chapter 100
"They've already eaten," The man replied.
"What did they eat?" Caroline was still worried.
"Milk and bread. Did you expect a gourmet meal on the road?" The man responded harshly.
This detail inadvertently revealed a key piece of information that they were also on the road and heading in the same direction as Caroline.
The other person was extremely cunning, deliberately preventing Caroline from getting close to Ryan and Sophie, thereby keeping her firmly under control and making her afraid to act rashly.
"When and where are we going to stop? I'm tired; I've been driving for over six hours!" Caroline protested.
"You can take a short break, but no more than half an hour. As for the destination, wait for further instructions. Remember, don't play tricks; every move you make is under our surveillance," The man warned.
Caroline had already noticed this; there were hidden surveillance devices installed inside the vehicle.
Even without the surveillance, with Ryan and Sophie's safety in the other party's hands, she wouldn't dare make any sudden moves.
Aurora City, the Kennedy Corp Tower, in the CEO's office.
"Police Captain Michael Johnson called; there's still no sign of Demi," Nick spoke, looking troubled.
"Did they trace the number that called?" Nathan asked in a deep voice.
"They couldn't trace it; it was a satellite phone. He just said you need to wire a million dollars to Demi. I've already instructed the transfer to the specified account," Nick replied.
"Something's strange," Nathan pointed out sharply.
"Likewise, but there's no other way right now. Demi disappeared with Ryan and Sophie; I have to comply for now," Nick sighed helplessly.
Nathan didn't say anything, but his face was stern and intimidating.
He thought that Caroline had gone too far. Not only did she take Ryan and Sophie, but she also demanded a huge sum of money.
With that money, she could easily live the rest of her life anywhere in the world
But Nathan found the situation suspicious because her actions were highly unusual.
He had once offered her three hundred million dollars, but she wasn't moved.
If she was only after money, she would have gladly accepted it.
She turned down three hundred million dollars and instead asked for a mere million dollars. Wasn't that crazy? It made no sense!
The only explanation was that she valued Ryan and Sophie more. This completely overturned Nathan's previous assumptions. He had thought she refused the money to use Ryan and Sophie as leverage to marry into the Kennedy Family for greater benefits.
But now, she had run off with Ryan and Sophie, asking for only a million dollars, which was completely contrary to Nathan's guess.
What was even more surprising was that the ransom call wasn't made by her but by a man.
Could it be that the man who called was the stepfather she found for Ryan and Sophie?
At the thought of this, Nathan's gaze grew even sharper.
"Do you think Demi really ran off with Ryan and Sophie?" Nick asked anxiously.
Nathan was even more annoyed. Obviously, she had run off!
He had long advised Nick to be wary of her, but Nick wouldn't listen. Nick even wanted to marry her. This time, Ryan and Sophie were gone!
Nick added, "But Nathan, I don't think she's that kind of person."
"Then what kind of person is she?" Nathan asked coldly.
Nick uttered, "Think about it. If she just wanted that million dollars, why go through all this trouble? She could have just asked us directly."
"Isn't she asking for it now?" Nathan retorted.
Nick explained, "I mean, she didn't need to take Ryan and Sophie. I could give her a million dollars anytime; it's strange for her to run away. If she wants Ryan and Sophie, there's no need for that either. Ryan and Sophie are already hers; I never intended to take them away."
Nick continued to analyze, "Besides, she, Ryan, and Sophie were abroad. If she wanted money, she could have just sent a photo. Even if she asked for a hundred million dollars, I would have given it to her. It's not necessary for her to bring Ryan and Sophie back to the country and then run away? I think her actions make no sense!"
Nathan agreed with some of Nick's points but remained skeptical about others.
He had a bias against Caroline. Since he formed a prejudice against Caroline, he only saw her flaws. Even Caroline's reasonable actions seemed unreasonable in his eyes, and he might have even imagined her countless malicious intents.
At this moment, Jack entered the room. "Mr. Nathan Kennedy, Sarah has arrived."
Nathan nodded slightly, indicating she could be brought in.
Sarah stepped into the spacious and luxurious office for the first time, never imagining such an opulent workspace existed.
This place was more like a private club than an office.
"Mr. Nathan Kennedy," Sarah greeted respectfully, bowing her head.
Nathan responded with a slight grunt.
"Report today's events in detail to Mr. Nathan Kennedy," Jack instructed Sarah.
"Okay. When we heard about the accident at the kindergarten, Demi and I decided to drive there," Sarah then recounted everything in great detail.
Nathan listened quietly without saying a word.
As soon as Sarah finished, she anxiously pleaded, "Demi must be in trouble, Mr. Nathan Kennedy. Please find her quickly."
Nick was the first to respond, shouting, "That's right, Demi must be in trouble!"
"Mr. Nick Kennedy, what do you mean?" Jack asked obsequiously.
"It's obvious. Demi must have been kidnapped!" Nick declared confidently.
After Nick spoke, he looked at Nathan, only to find Nathan expressionless, showing no reaction. Nathan had already figured things out but kept his thoughts to himself. He was planning his next steps.
"How can you be sure?" Jack asked.
Jack was a smart guy with his own judgments, but he pretended to be clueless to please Nick.
"Demi received a call and then asked Ms. Parker to get out of the car. She wanted to drive alone. Clearly, the call was from the kidnappers, and Demi complied," Nick explained logically.
Nathan frowned. Did this simple deduction really need to be said?
"And then?" Jack continued to ask.
"Then Ms. Parker's car was found in the parking lot, but Demi was gone, meaning she left in another car. We can check the parking lot's surveillance to find all the cars that left during that time. Although the internal surveillance is limited, the exit must have cameras," Nick explained.
"Mr. Nick Kennedy, your insight is remarkable!" Jack immediately agreed.
"Enough," Nathan finally interrupted.
Everyone fell silent.
"Did I say something wrong?" Nick asked, puzzled.
"Everyone already knows what you said," Nathan responded calmly, giving Jack a cold look. Jack instantly tensed up, fearing his attempt to please Nick would be caught.
"Prepare the car," Nathan ordered Jack.
"Yes, the driver is ready," Jack replied quickly.
"I'll drive myself. I need an SUV," Nathan emphasized.
"An SUV? Are you going on a long journey?" Jack quickly understood Nathan's intention.
