Chapter 127

Nathan indeed stopped, intending to continue listening.

"All because of her disgraceful behavior! Five years ago, she slept with Colin to get a role, but he found out she wasn't a virgin—she had already had sex in middle school. When she didn't get the part, she promised to find a virgin for him. She then tried to offer me to Colin by pushing me into his room. Luckily, she got the room number wrong, and I ended up in your room, Mr. Kennedy, which is how we met." Roxanne spoke while observing Nathan's expression.

Nathan's anger was palpable; he never imagined Caroline could be so vile. Roxanne's story was airtight, especially since Nathan had been at the club that night. Even with his sharp mind, he struggled to discern truth from deception.

"Is what you said true?" Nathan's voice was icy.

"Absolutely, because of these past events, I hate Caroline to the core and want to get rid of her!" Roxanne replied.

Nathan remained silent.

"When her mother found out and scolded her, she dismissed it, saying that anyone could be sacrificed for fame. Unable to manipulate me and still rejected by Colin, she tried to bribe him with a million dollars. Lacking the funds, she asked her seriously ill mother for help, who was financially strained and asked her to wait. In a fit of rage, she smothered her mother to death. Unable to stay, she fled abroad and assumed a new identity. That's why she changed her name; she's truly heartless!"

Nathan's fists clenched tighter, never expecting such a dark secret behind Caroline's name change!

"Did she really kill her own mother?"

"Exactly! Why else would she flee abroad? Mr. Kennedy, you have no idea how terrified I was when I first saw her on set. I was scared out of my mind—anyone capable of killing their own mother is truly dangerous! I kept targeting her, just to keep her away from me, fearing that one day I might become her next victim!" Roxanne cried, her emotions sincere and deeply moving.

Nathan was already half-convinced. It wasn't just Roxanne's words—he had his own doubts about Caroline. Finding her at Sawyer's apartment had led him to conclude she was promiscuous. Now, with Roxanne's coherent story, Nathan was sure of it.

"Call her over, and you two can confront each other." Nathan said coldly.

"Mr. Kennedy, she is cunning; I have never been her match. She will surely find an excuse to exonerate herself. I have said all this only to let you know the truth. Whether you believe it or not, it doesn't matter to me anymore. Regardless, I am indeed at fault. If you spare my life, I will repay you." With that, Roxanne cried again.

Caroline watched Roxanne plead with Nathan and knew she must be speaking ill of her, though the specifics were unclear. As partners, Nathan naturally trusted Roxanne more, and Caroline sensed something was wrong.

When Nathan returned, Caroline immediately noticed his colder demeanor. His disdainful look made her feel worthless. She figured Roxanne's words were having their effect. But it didn't bother her much; she already had a low opinion of Nathan, and their mutual dislike was nothing new.

As long as she made it out of the jungle and returned to civilization, he would still be a god-like figure, and she would remain an obscure actress. Therefore, Caroline met Nathan's cold gaze with one of her own. If he disdained her, she saw no reason to please him. But she would never let him take custody of Ryan and Sophie. Their unspoken hatred only intensified.

After badmouthing Caroline to the fullest, Roxanne noticed Nathan's trust in her and felt pleased. Even if it meant her own demise, she was determined to bring Caroline down with her.

Late at night, Caroline was awakened by a sudden commotion. With Ryan and Sophie sleeping beside her, she didn't dare go out and could only make out the sound of frantic footsteps.

Gradually, the commotion died down, and the surroundings returned to silence.Only then did she cautiously step out and ask John what had happened.

"A few kidnappers managed to escape. We let our guard down for a moment, and they took the opportunity to slip away. We pursued them for several hundred yards, but Mr. Kennedy ordered us to stand down to avoid further risk." John explained.

"I see." Caroline nodded slightly and turned back to the cabin.

It wasn't until the next morning that she learned the kidnappers not only escaped but also took Roxanne with them.

Whether Roxanne helped the kidnappers escape or they helped her, the truth was unclear.

In the end, Roxanne and the kidnappers disappeared into the vast jungle.

Navigating this dense forest was tough enough during the day, but at night, it was downright perilous, making their reckless attempt an incredibly risky move.

At breakfast, Nathan's face was grim.

Caroline didn't dare provoke him, keeping her distance.

After lunch, Caroline helped clean the table and noticed an untouched bowl of food.

"Who wasted food like this? Food is so precious now, and someone still dares to throw it away?" she couldn't help but ask.

No one answered, but she noticed someone sneaking a glance at Nathan.

Caroline's heart trembled; could it be his?

Had she known, she would never have spoken up!

She quickly fell silent, continuing her work quietly.

However, it was too late; Nathan had already walked over.

"My stomach wasn't feeling well, so I left some." His voice was cold.

It was clearly a reprimand. Though he didn't say it outright, his meaning was evident: 'Is there a problem with me leaving some food?'
