Chapter 38

Luke's phone buzzed. It was Roxanne.

"Did you get it?" Her voice was all hushed.

"Almost," Luke mumbled.

"Almost? You can't even handle a kid? Don't you wanna leave with me?" Roxanne snapped.

"Of course I do," Luke shot back.

"Then get it done! If you can't handle this, how can I feel safe with you? How can I dare to leave with you?" Roxanne pushed.

"I got it," Luke said, hanging up.

His eyes turned icy as he glared at Ryan. Suddenly, it clicked—this kid looked like Nathan!

He must be Nathan's kid! Maybe Nathan and Roxanne's kid, stashed away to avoid suspicion!

Luke's mind went wild. The more he thought, the more he hated, and the more he wanted to end it.

He stepped toward Ryan.

Ryan saw the evil in Luke's eyes and knew he was in trouble.

"Want some water?" Ryan stammered, his voice shaky, eyes red.

"Don't blame me; it's your fault for being Nathan's kid!" Luke spat.

Just then, music blasted from the study; Sophie had cranked up the speakers.

Luke froze. Was someone else in the study?

Sophie knew Ryan's plan to lure the bad guy and wanted to help, so she turned up the music, hoping to draw Luke back to the study.

If Luke went back, Ryan might escape.

Luke pulled a knife from his bag and rushed to the study.

He stopped, freaked out.

How did the kid from the living room get to the study?

How come?

Sophie saw Luke's freaked-out face and realized he thought she was Ryan.

He didn't know there were two kids!

"Want some water?" Sophie mimicked Ryan's shaky voice.

Luke stared at Sophie, spooked. Even the toughest guy would be scared by this.

A crash came from the living room—a teacup shattered.

Luke rushed back, and Sophie hid under the desk.

In the living room, Ryan stood by the sofa, grinning weirdly, "Want some water?"

Luke's legs felt like jelly. He rushed back to the study to check.

The kid in the study was gone, and the music had stopped!

He rushed back to the living room, but the kid there was gone too!

Then the music started again in the study! He rushed back and saw the kid standing there, eyes red, staring coldly.

Sophie was terrified. When Luke returned to the living room, she wiped away a tear.

Luke was scared. This kid could teleport! The kid wasn't human!

"I'm gonna kill you!" Luke shouted, trying to pump himself up.

But he didn't move, too scared.

Another noise from the living room—the TV.

Luke didn't dare turn around right away; he backed up toward the living room. When he finally turned, the kid was there, holding the remote, staring coldly.

Luke felt like he was losing it.

In a rage, he charged at the kid with the knife.
