Chapter 130
"You can't mess around. Eat a little first. I'll get you a piece of cake to tide you over, and tonight we'll have a big feast, okay?" Caroline coaxed.
"Alright," Sophie reluctantly agreed.
Just then, the doorbell rang. It was room service.
"Hello, Mr. Nick Kennedy ordered this meal for you," the server said with a smile.
When the box was opened, it revealed Sophie's favorite chicken legs, shrimp, and some comforting desserts.
Clearly, this special treat was customized for Sophie.
"Daddy is the best; he knows me so well!" Sophie cheered, drooling with joy.
"Daddy has no principles. How can he let Sophie eat so many sweets at once? She'll get a stomachache!," Ryan frowned.
"No, Daddy is the most principled person I know. He's the best daddy in the world!" Sophie couldn't wait to dig in.
Faced with such tempting food, it was almost impossible for Sophie not to take a few bites, so Caroline had no choice but to control the portions.
"Mom, you should eat some too. Seeing how thin you've become makes me really sad." Sophie's words were hard to refuse. Once Caroline started eating, she had a reason to indulge.
"This is our first meal back; we need to control the amount."
Caroline gave Sophie some food. "You can only eat this much, or you'll really get sick."
Sophie looked at Caroline with a pitiful expression. "Mom, isn't this a bit too little?"
"This is all you can have, or your stomach won't handle it. If you end up in the hospital, you won't be able to eat anything!"
Sophie, heartbroken, compromised, "Alright, I'll just eat until I'm half full."
After the meal, Caroline wanted to sleep deeply but found herself unusually awake, despite being exhausted.
When she finally fell asleep, she dreamt of Nathan, covered in blood, frantically escaping with her through the jungle.
Even in her dream, Caroline was confused about why they were fleeing.
The dream was chaotic, and Caroline ran blindly with Nathan, not knowing where they were headed.
The surroundings were eerie and oppressive, making it hard for Caroline to breathe.
Suddenly, a shadowy figure appeared ahead, resembling Roxanne but not quite.
The woman, with disheveled hair and a long knife, charged at them.
"Nathan, run! I'll hold her off!" Dream Caroline rushed forward to protect Nathan.
She only wanted to protect Nathan, as if their roles were reversed, and she was the protector while Nathan was the vulnerable one.
"No, you go away; I'll deal with her."
They were at a stalemate, and the woman was already close, stabbing Nathan in the chest.
"Nathan," Caroline cried out in anguish.
"Mom," Caroline woke up to find Sophie and Ryan patting her face.
Sitting up, Caroline realized she was drenched in sweat.
The jungle life had left her malnourished and weak, leading to these constant nightmares.
"Mom, what did you dream about? We've been calling you for a long time," Sophie asked with concern.
"It's nothing," Caroline exhaled, still shaken by the dream.
"Why did you keep calling Nathan's name?" Sophie pressed on.
"Did I? I didn't even know. I didn't dream about him," Caroline replied.
"You were crying too. Did something happen to Nathan?" Sophie didn't believe her.
"It's nothing; don't overthink it. What time is it? Are they back yet?" Caroline changed the subject.
"It's seven in the morning, and they're not back yet," Ryan said from the side.
Caroline's heart tightened. She thought, 'Could something have happened?'
The doorbell rang again, and an exaggerated shout came from outside, "Kids, honey, I'm home!" Such flamboyance could only belong to Nick.
"Dad's back! Awesome, we can go out for dinner!" Sophie jumped up excitedly.
Opening the door, Nick rushed in and headed straight for the bedroom.
"Get out! How can you just barge into a girl's room? Where are your manners?" Caroline scolded.
"But you're my darling. What's the big deal?" Nick argued.
"I'm not!" Caroline immediately retorted.
"We have kids this grown, and you still say you're not my darling?"
"We don't have a marriage certificate, do we?"
"We can get one anytime."
"I don't want to marry you; I don't like you," Caroline said bluntly.
"What's wrong with me? I'm handsome, charming, and wealthy. Plenty of women are interested in me, so why aren't you? Are you just playing hard to get?Admit it, you've already got a soft spot for me. Even if you say you don't like me, it's hard to hide that special feeling, right? Do I show up in your dreams too, but you're just too shy to admit it?" Nick said with a sly grin.
"Mom keeps dreaming about Nathan," Sophie suddenly interjected.
"What?" Nick's eyes widened in shock..
"Sophie, it's not good to talk nonsense," Caroline quickly stopped her, but her cheeks couldn't help but blush.
Sophie pouted innocently. "I'm telling the truth. Ask Ryan if you don't believe me."
"You dreamt of Nathan? What did you dream about him?" Nick pressed on, staring intently at Caroline.
"You're taking a child's word for it? Your logic's a bit off.Why would I dream about him?" Caroline tried to protest, but her voice faltered.
"Yes, so why would you dream about him? Do you like him? Is that why you're so distant with me?" Nick pretended to have an epiphany.
"Who would be interested in him? His perpetually expressionless face makes me sick!" Caroline couldn't help but complain.
"You don't like him? That's great! I'll relay that to Nathan. What was it you said? Say it again?" Nick said with a smirk.
Caroline was exasperated.
"Mom said, looking at Nathan makes her sick!" Sophie repeated like a recorder.
"Can't you be quiet for a moment?" Caroline gave Sophie a helpless look.
