Chapter 20

At 7 PM, in this kiddie joint, Ryan was just poking at his food, thinking about whether to spill the beans to Caroline about the commercial shoot that afternoon.

Sarah had said keeping it from Caroline was a nice move since the gig was to help her out, but Ryan still felt kinda bad. He always thought lying to her was a no-go.

Sophie, though, didn't give a hoot. She was chowing down like there was no tomorrow, her face all greasy, eyes locked on the other dishes.

"Sophie, can you chill with the manners? It's important to be polite," Caroline frowned.

Sophie quickly wiped her greasy mouth and sat up straight, but her eyes stayed glued to her plate.

Ryan, with all that yummy food, had barely touched his. She was itching to help him finish it.

Ryan had already caught on to Sophie's plan and slid his plate over to her, giving her the green light to dig in.

"Thanks, Ryan," Sophie grinned.

"Sophie, if you keep eating like that, you're gonna blow up like a balloon," Caroline scolded, but her eyes were soft and loving.

"No way. I'm a super invincible beauty that everyone loves. I'll never get fat," Sophie said, diving back into her food.

Caroline turned to Sarah. "These two were born just minutes apart, but why can Sophie eat so much more than Ryan?"

"Different body types, I guess. She doesn't gain weight, just like you. After all these years, you still look like you did in high school. It's really something," Sarah said.

"What's there to envy? I'm just broke," Caroline laughed.

"Speaking of money, tomorrow there'll be a thousand bucks in your account. The kids need to go to school, and everything costs money. It's not easy for you."

"A thousand bucks? Is it the advance for the film?" Caroline asked.

"Yeah." Sarah was debating whether to tell her that the money was actually earned by Sophie and Ryan.

Even though the kids were cute, it was their first commercial, so a thousand bucks was a pretty sweet deal.

Sarah didn't take a dime, planning to give it all to Caroline. She knew being a single mom was tough.

"That's awesome. This is my first paycheck since coming back. Thanks, Sarah. Cheers," Caroline raised her juice.

Sarah said, "Honestly, if these two got into showbiz, they might outshine you..."

"Let's not go there. I brought them into this world, so it's my job to take care of them. I can't let them deal with the harsh stuff so young," Caroline cut her off.

Sophie, hearing this, looked up with her mouth full. "Mommy, we wanna help you. You're too tired. Ryan and I can handle it."

Ryan nodded in agreement.

"No more talk about this. Anyway, I don't allow it," Caroline said firmly.

Seeing Caroline's determined look, Sarah didn't dare spill the truth. She figured she'd find another time to explain the real deal to Caroline.

Sarah said, "Tomorrow's the first day of shooting. We gotta be on set by nine. Can't be late on the first day. I'm pumped to see your performance."

Caroline nodded. "Don't worry. I'll give it my all."

Sophie put down her fork and raised her chubby little fist. "Mommy's the best!"

Ryan nodded like crazy.
