Chapter 177
"Okay." Nathan actually agreed.
Caroline was very surprised; she didn't expect Nathan to agree so easily. Her goal was simple: she wanted to move into the Kennedy Manor with the children and then take them with her when she moved out. Nathan was a smart person and should have seen through her plan, but he agreed?
This made Caroline a bit uneasy. Did he have some kind of scheme since he agreed so easily?
"Really?" Caroline decided to confirm.
"Of course," Nathan replied coldly.
"Alright." Caroline felt a bit relieved. "Can the children and I share a room?"
"No, the Kennedy family children are trained to be independent from a young age. Each has their own room, and adults don't accompany them. You and Nick aren't married, so it's not appropriate to live together. My grandparents have been in a bad mood lately; you can stay with my grandmother for now and get to know each other," Nathan said.
"What?" Caroline immediately realized that Nathan indeed had bad intentions, making her stay with a grumpy old lady! Most wealthy family matriarchs are difficult to get along with—proud, picky, and disrespectful. Arranging for her to stay with his angry grandmother was asking for trouble!
Moreover, Caroline was used to being casual in her daily life, and it was inevitable that she might slip up. If she accidentally angered his grandmother, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"I'm not going," Caroline refused decisively.
"Then there's nothing I can do," Nathan had clearly anticipated her reaction.
With that, Nathan stood up and left without saying anything more. His goal had been achieved, and there was no need to waste any more time.
Caroline felt a bit frustrated; she still couldn't outsmart him. After all her careful planning, he easily thwarted her. Helpless, Caroline left the Kennedy Corp headquarters and decided to find a hotel to settle down for now. She browsed online for a long time and finally chose a hotel that wasn't too expensive.
To avoid being attacked by malicious fans again, Caroline deliberately wore a mask. She used to see celebrities covering themselves up when they went out and now understood the helplessness of it. Other public figures worried about being recognized because they had too many fans, but she was afraid of being attacked!
At the hotel front desk, she took out her driver's license to check in. "Miss, please take off your mask first; we need to verify your identity," the receptionist reminded her.
After hesitating for a moment, Caroline had no choice but to remove her mask. When her delicate face was exposed, the receptionist couldn't help but be stunned. "Are you Demi?"
"I'm not," Caroline quickly denied.
"You really look like her!"
"I'm really not!" Caroline quickly put her mask back on.
The receptionist looked quite excited. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I'm also a fan of Sawyer, but I would never insult you."
Since she had already been recognized, Caroline really didn't want to stay there. "Sorry, I won't be staying here."
"Don't be like that; we won't disclose your stay. You're so famous now, you could be recognized anywhere. It's better to stay here," the receptionist tried hard to persuade her.
Looking at the sincere young woman in front of her, Caroline felt a bit moved. "No, I still won't stay. Please refund my deposit, thank you."
"Just stay here. It's the same anywhere you go. I'll pay for it, and nothing will happen. If any reporters come, I can notify you in advance to avoid them. Isn't that more convenient?" she sincerely persuaded.
Feeling touched, Caroline decided to accept the kindness. "Alright, I'll listen to you. But I'll pay for the room myself, thank you for your kindness."
"It's okay, the employee rate is very cheap. If you insist, just treat me to a late-night snack," the receptionist said.
Not wanting to linger in the lobby, Caroline agreed. The receptionist personally took Caroline to her room and, before leaving, asked if they could take a photo together. Caroline was initially reluctant but, seeing the expectant look on the receptionist's face, agreed and took off her mask for a photo.
"My name is Isabella Taylor. I'm happy to have you here. I'm a big fan of Sawyer and hope you two will be happy!" Isabella introduced herself with a big smile.
Caroline initially wanted to clarify the facts but decided against it. Sometimes, explaining too much only added to the trouble, so she just smiled.
After Isabella left, Caroline lay on the bed and opened her phone to browse the internet. She was shocked by the flood of insults on her social media.
Caroline used to find it amusing when celebrities were insulted, but now that she was the one being criticized, she realized how painful it was. These strangers used the most vicious language to attack her as if they had a deep-seated hatred. Facing the insults on the screen, tears unknowingly welled up in her eyes.
For so many years, she had raised Ryan and Sophie alone, never showing weakness in front of others no matter how difficult it was. But at this moment, she suddenly wanted to cry. Even if she did nothing wrong, she could still be bullied, and unprovoked harm from strangers was especially heartbreaking.
