Chapter 154

Finally, they reached downtown, and the clock in the car showed it was already 11:30.

"Where are Ryan and Sophie now?" Caroline asked Nathan.

"At home."

"At home?" she echoed, confused.

"Yes, at their own home."

"It's so late now; I wonder if they're still waiting for me," Caroline said, a bit worried.

Nathan didn't respond.

Nathan halted at the entrance to Sarah's neighborhood. "I have something to tell you."

"Me too," she replied.

Seeing that they had reached their destination, Caroline suddenly felt more confident. To avoid being taken to the suburbs again, she quickly rolled down the window and left the car door slightly open so he couldn't lock it.

"You bastard! Making me dizzy and then dumping me in the middle of nowhere"Caroline's voice grew louder as she recalled the events of the evening, getting angrier by the minute.

Nathan was taken aback. He had originally planned to confront her, but her crying had been so annoying that he had held back. He had intended to say his piece and leave, but Caroline beat him to it, and she was so fierce in her accusations.

Caroline had the nerve to act self-righteous despite her tangled relationships with so many people?!

"Your behavior is absolutely despicable!Bullying a vulnerable woman—do you really think you can control everything like this? I thought you were at least a bit more humane than Nathan, but you're just as cold, selfish, and arrogant as the rest. None of you are any good!"Caroline's anger grew as she recalled the night's events.

Caroline was not only a great actress but also skilled in arguments. Once she started, she wouldn't give her opponent a chance to speak. Nathan, who was not good with words, couldn't find an opportunity to refute.

Finally, she declared, "I'm not marrying you. Marry whoever you want; I'd rather become a nun than marry you!"

Nathan was furious, feeling like he was about to explode. He had been holding back for so long, just waiting to say this, but she beat him to it!

How could she be the one to say she wouldn't marry into the Kennedy Family? Clearly, it was they who didn't want her.

If it were Nick, he would have fought back. But it was Nathan standing there in his white suit, too proud to argue. Even though he was seething with anger, he wouldn't lower himself to bickering. He just said coldly, "Get out!"

"Fine! You better stay far away from me, you uncultured, heartless rich jerk. What do you have besides money?"

After hurling her final insult, Caroline quickly got out of the car, slammed the door, and ran. The engine roared like a beast as the car sped away.

Watching the car disappear, Caroline realized how angry the driver must have been. Then it hit her—she had forgotten something crucial: Ryan and Sophie were still waiting to be picked up!

She immediately called Nick, but his phone was off.

Caroline was dumbfounded. She had been so focused on venting her anger that she forgot the kids were still with the Kennedy Family.

Now that she had offended Nick, he probably wouldn't let her take the kids back.

Acting on impulse was a big mistake. No matter how angry she was, she should have picked up the kids first.

She returned to Sarah's house full of regret. Sarah was still awake, watching an online variety show and laughing.

"Why do you look so exhausted?" Sarah teased.

Sarah had also had quite a bit to drink. Before Caroline could speak, she leaned in. "Come on, tell me the details. Did you and Joseph go to a hotel? Or did you drive to some dark corner to make love?"

"I was messed with. I'm not in the mood to talk about it now. Let me take a break," Caroline waved her hand.

"Alright, I'll go take a shower first. You should get ready for bed too. We have work tomorrow."

Sarah was about to leave but was stopped by Caroline. "Wait, don't go yet. Help me figure something out."

"You said you didn't want to talk about it. What do you need help with?"

"I really offended Nick tonight. I yelled at him."

"What? Why did you yell at him?"

"He caught me with Joseph, then he beat Joseph up. You wouldn't believe it, he usually seems so carefree, but he can be really fierce when he fights. Anyway, he sped like crazy, made me car sick, and then dumped me in the middle of nowhere!"

"How did you get back?" Sarah asked curiously.

"He drove me back, all the way to the door. When we got there, I yelled at him again. It wasn't until I calmed down that I realized the kids were still with him. Now it's a big deal."

"So he took you for a ride and then brought you back. It doesn't sound too bad. If he had really left you in a remote place, you wouldn't be here chatting with me," Sarah said.

Caroline was momentarily stunned by the question. It did make some sense.

"No, it's not like you think!" Caroline suddenly said.

"Then what happened?"

"He just wanted to mess with me. I was followed by a few drunk guys and almost got into trouble." Recalling the scene, Caroline still felt scared.

"And then?"

"Then he drove back and scared those guys away."

"So he saved you, and you still yelled at him?"

Caroline retorted, "He caused the trouble in the first place. Why should I thank him? If someone pushes you into a cesspool and then pulls you out, would you thank them?"

Sarah thought for a moment. "So what are you worried about now?"

"I'm worried about how to get the kids back from him. I've already offended him."

Sarah nodded. "That is tricky. I'll go take a shower and sleep now. We'll figure it out tomorrow when we're well-rested." With that, Sarah ran off, ignoring Caroline's shouts. She hoped Caroline could marry into the Kennedy Family.

Nathan returned to his own neighborhood, changed out of his white shirt, and put on his loungewear before heading to the spacious children's room.

Seeing his bodyguard about to greet him, Nathan gestured for silence, not wanting to disturb the children's sleep.

Sophie, wearing cartoon pajamas and hugging a stuffed animal, was curled up and sleeping soundly, which eased Nathan's frustration with Caroline.

He gently tucked her in and quietly left the room.

As he was about to enter Ryan's bedroom, Ryan was already awake and sitting up with the light on.

"Sorry to wake you," Nathan said apologetically.

"No, I wasn't asleep," Ryan replied.

"Why aren't you resting so late?" Nathan asked with concern, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"I was wondering why Mom didn't come to take us home," Ryan's question set Nathan off. Clearly, Ryan and Sophie were waiting for her, but she was out messing around!

But he knew he couldn't show such negative emotions in front of the child, so he made up an excuse, "Your mom had to work late, so she couldn't come."

"Did she call?" Ryan continued to ask.

Nathan nodded. "Yes, but you were already asleep, so I didn't wake you."

Ryan suddenly asked seriously, "Are we good friends, Nathan?"

Nathan was slightly surprised but then agreed, "Of course. You can tell me anything."

Getting the expected answer, Ryan continued to probe, "I want to tell you something, but I'm afraid it will upset you."

Sometimes, Nathan was overwhelmed with emotions seeing how mature Ryan was for his age. No child should have to bear such heavy burdens.

He reassured, "Nothing you say will upset me. Go ahead."

"Do you dislike my mom?" Ryan's question hit the mark.

This question left Nathan momentarily stunned. How could a child always ask such unanswerable questions?

Nathan tried to explain, "The adult world is complicated, not as simple as relationships between kids. I can only say she's a very excellent person."

Caroline raised Ryan and Sophie on her own while having a successful career in acting. She was talented, dedicated, and might even become a movie star in the future.

Ryan asked again, "Then why don't you like my mom?"
