Chapter 36
The next day, filming was back on.
Roxanne pulled the director aside and suggested that to keep everyone focused, all phones should be handed in during shooting, and no personal calls allowed.
The director was on board with Roxanne's idea, so everyone powered down their phones.
Once Roxanne was sure Caroline couldn't answer her phone, she slipped into the restroom and used another phone to call Luke.
Meanwhile, over at Sarah's place, Sophie had just wrapped up her study session and was about to dive into some anime when the doorbell rang.
"Mommy's home!" Sophie squealed, rushing to the door.
But Ryan stopped her, motioning for her to stay quiet.
Sophie quickly remembered that Caroline usually got home super late from filming, so it was weird for her to be back now.
Ryan and Sophie dragged a chair to the door. Ryan helped Sophie climb up to peek through the peephole.
A dude with a scar on his eyebrow was standing there, holding a pizza box.
"There's a guy with food," Sophie whispered to Ryan.
"Food?" Ryan asked.
"Looks like pizza," Sophie said, licking her lips.
"Ask him who he is," Ryan instructed.
"Who are you?" Sophie asked.
"I'm the delivery guy. Your mom asked me to bring you some food," Luke replied.
"Awesome," Sophie said, getting excited at the thought of pizza.
But Ryan wasn't convinced and signaled Sophie to hold off.
"He's sketchy," Ryan muttered.
Even though Sophie was craving pizza, she didn't dare open the door after hearing Ryan's warning.
Ryan was definitely the brains of the operation.
Luke heard the kid's voice and thought he had it in the bag. If the kid was alone, he could do whatever he wanted.
But the door stayed shut.
Getting annoyed, he stopped ringing the bell and started banging on the door. "Open up, it'll get cold soon."
"Ask him what Mom's phone number is," Ryan said calmly.
"Excuse me, did my mommy ask you to bring this?" Sophie asked.
"Yeah, your mom asked me to bring it. Hurry up and open the door, the pizza's gonna get hard if it gets cold," Luke was losing his patience.
He thought it would be a piece of cake, but the kid was too smart to open the door.
"What's my mom's phone number?" Sophie asked.
This stumped Luke; he didn't know Caroline's number. "I forgot it," he said, thinking he could easily fool the kids.
But he didn't know these kids were little geniuses.
"He said he forgot it," Sophie whispered, "He must be lying."
Ryan nodded. "Don't open the door."
"Hurry up and open the door, the pizza's getting cold," Luke was getting more and more impatient.
But there was no response.
Ryan quickly ran to the living room and picked up the phone to call Caroline.
But Caroline's phone was off.
He then called Sarah, the call went through, but no one answered.
"Tell him we don't want it, to take it back," Ryan whispered to Sophie.
"We're not hungry, we don't want it, take it back," Sophie said.
"The money's already been paid, how can you not want it? Open the door!" Luke was even more impatient and started kicking the door.
"We really don't want it. You can have it, just go away and stop knocking," Sophie responded loudly.
Luke didn't expect the kid to be so hard to fool; he couldn't waste any more time.
He put down the box, took out tools from his backpack, and started picking the lock.
