Chapter 19

Under Sarah's sweet-talking, Caroline finally caved and let her take the boy-girl twins out.

Sophie swapped into some boy's clothes and threw on a hat, making her and Ryan look like twins boys.

To keep up the act, Sophie even put on a serious face, trying to match Ryan's cool vibe.

When they rolled up to the audition hotel, Simon was over the moon. "They're absolutely gorgeous! These two are gonna be stars."

Simon made a beeline for Sophie, but Ryan jumped in front of her, throwing up a hand to keep Simon at bay.

Caroline had drilled it into him that Sophie was a girl and strange dudes shouldn't get too close, especially not in a cozy way. So, Ryan had to play bodyguard and keep folks at a distance.

Simon was caught off guard and looked at Sarah. "What's the deal?"

Sarah was just as clueless about Ryan's move, but since he wasn't talking, she turned to Sophie.

"You’re a guy, so you can't get too close to me," Sophie said.

Everyone around cracked up; Sophie was just too cute.

"Why can't I get close to you?" Simon teased.

She was about to spill the beans and say 'I'm a girl,' but Ryan shot her a look, so she just pouted instead.

"Simon, how about we kick off the audition? I gotta get the kids back later," Sarah said, checking her watch.

"Alright, let's get rolling. Our commercial's for a kids' learning computer. It's super easy to use, and kids can learn all sorts of basic stuff on it. It's like a souped-up learning machine. Here's a sample," Simon explained.

Ryan's eyes lit up at the word 'computer,' and he grabbed it to check it out. But his excitement fizzled fast; this kiddie toy was way too basic for him. To him, it wasn't even a real computer, just a fancy educational toy.

The crew got into position, and the audition kicked off.

According to the script, Ryan was supposed to hold the learning computer and say, "Educational games."

Then Sophie would follow with, "E-books and videos."

And together, they'd say, "Inspire a love of learning with the tablet!"

The two stood in front of the camera, cool as cucumbers, looking like little stars. But there was a snag: Ryan wouldn't say his lines, and his expression was too cool, not soft enough.

"Sweetie, why won't you say your lines?" Sarah asked Ryan.

"Childish," Ryan shot back.

Sarah was stumped; she recalled Ryan was a whiz kid who'd won programming contests. For him, this learning computer was just too kiddie.

Sarah tried to coax him, "We're doing this commercial to make some cash, and with that money, we can help your mom. Can you please play along?"

Ryan looked at Sarah, then nodded. But when they started shooting again, he still couldn't bring himself to say the lines. He was used to being the strong, silent type, and saying those lines all peppy was just too much.

"Can I say Ryan's lines?" Sophie piped up.

Simon sighed but agreed. "Let's shoot it and fix it in post."

Without the hassle of lines, the two adorable kids nailed it in one take.
