Chapter 31
Nathan slammed the docs on the table, making Jack and Roxanne freeze up.
Roxanne's fake clueless act was really getting on Nathan's nerves. But it also made him sure she was hiding Sophie's identity on purpose, which was why she kept the media from releasing the pics.
He didn't wanna deal with Roxanne; her act was just too much, and he was over it.
He got up, snatched the photo from Jack, and shoved it in Roxanne's face.
"Whose kid is this?" Nathan's deep, smooth voice cut through the tension.
Mr. Kennedy didn't talk much, but when he did, his voice was both nice and icy.
Roxanne got even more freaked out. This was her worst nightmare; she was scared Nathan would find Caroline because of Sophie and dig up the old secrets.
But her fears came true; Nathan saw the pic and was already on the hunt for Sophie's mom.
Roxanne's face went pale, but she tried to keep it together. "How would I know? I just bumped into the kid at the airport. No clue whose kid he is."
Nathan's eyes narrowed, and the pressure in the room went up a notch, making Roxanne step back without thinking.
"Fine," Nathan said.
Even Jack was puzzled by what Nathan meant by "fine."
Nathan waved his hand, telling Roxanne to scram.
Roxanne let out a breath, thinking it was over. She checked her fancy watch and asked, "How about lunch? It's been a while since we ate together."
Nathan didn't even look up, just sat back down and focused on the docs.
Roxanne stood there awkwardly for a few seconds, realized Nathan was done with her, and reluctantly turned to leave.
As she was about to go, she glanced back at Nathan, but he was still buried in the docs, like she didn't exist.
"Ms. Campbell, let me see you out," Jack said, bowing slightly and gesturing.
"Get lost," Roxanne snapped, still pissed, and cursed at Jack.
Jack was shocked. He was Nathan's right-hand man, a big shot in the company. People usually tried to get on his good side, but Roxanne had the nerve to tell him off.
Jack's eyes went cold, but he just gave a bitter smile. "Take care, Ms. Campbell."
He was supposed to walk her to the parking lot, but after that, he decided not to bother.
"Do you think you can marry Mr. Kennedy? Dream on," Jack muttered as he watched Roxanne get in the elevator. But then he saw Nathan coming out of the office.
Jack tensed up, not sure if Nathan heard him.
"Have someone tail her," Nathan told Jack.
After a couple of seconds, Jack got what Nathan was thinking.
Roxanne definitely knew who the kid was and was hiding it. Now that she'd been called out, she'd try to cover her tracks.
By having someone follow her, they could see where she went and who she met, maybe get some clues.
It seemed that Nathan really cared about that kid, after all, they looked exactly the same. Anyone would have paid attention if they saw a child who looked exactly like them.
