Chapter 114
"This piece of bark comes from upstream, which means there are people there, and they can't be far. It must be Demi and her group! We need to headupstream; going downstream will only take us farther away from them!" Sawyer said excitedly.
Roxanne heard this and felt a mix of emotions. She was surprised that that wretched Caroline was so lucky and hadn't died yet.
If Nathan were with them and learned about her confession to Sawyer, the fallout would be disastrous!
What should she do?
Despite her anxiety, Roxanne put on a joyful facade. "Really? If it's them, that would be great. As long as the kids are okay! I messed up before, but from now on, I will treat them well!"
Sawyer glanced at Roxanne disdainfully. "I don't believe you!"
"I know you don't trust me, but I will prove it with my actions," Roxanne said, pretending to be aggrieved.
"When we see them, you better come clean about everything you've done!" Sawyer said sternly.
"I will," Roxanne quickly agreed.
The two of them walked along the river, struggling to make their way upstream.
There was no clear path ahead, and they had to overcome numerous obstacles, making every step a struggle.
As they walked, they noticed signs that someone had passed through ahead.
"This seems to be a trail, which means someone has been here. We must be close to them!" Sawyer said excitedly.
For Sawyer, this was a glimmer of hope, but Roxanne felt even more anxious.
At this moment, she noticed that Sawyer, who was walking ahead, suddenly stopped and said nothing.
Roxanne looked up and saw Sawyer staring intently at a branch ahead with a tense expression.
A small, brightly colored snake hung there, its vivid hues signaling high toxicity.
Typically, the more colorful the snake, the more poisonous it is. This one had a slender body and an unusually shaped head, clearly not an ordinary snake.
While ordinary snakes avoid humans, venomous ones can be highly aggressive. Sawyer knew better than to make any sudden moves.
Roxanne had a sudden idea: if Sawyer disappeared, all her dirty secrets would stay hidden.
The dead never told secrets; they were the best keepers of secrets in the world.
With this thought, a ruthless glint flashed in Roxanne's eyes. "You go to hell!"
She then used all her strength to push Sawyer forward.
Caught off guard, Sawyer was pushed directly in front of the venomous snake by Roxanne.
The snake, sensing Sawyer's approach, attacked and left a bite mark on his neck in an instant.
Sawyer didn't feel intense pain, more like a needle prick, but soon the bitten area began to go numb.
He mustered all his strength and determination to pull the snake off his neck and throw it far away.
"Roxanne, you betrayed me."
"Sawyer, don't blame me. You and that bitch Caroline are in cahoots! Demi is actually Caroline. She's my sister, but I hate her to the core! Anyone associated with her must die, and that includes you!" Roxanne said through gritted teeth.
Sawyer's vision began to blur, and his hearing started to fade. Roxanne's curses became indistinct.
He only saw Roxanne's twisted face and vicious eyes, like a demon.
Then, the world went dark, and everythingfell silent.
Roxanne watched as Sawyer's face turned blue and purple, and he slowly fell to the ground, foaming at the mouth.
Roxanne laughed out loud. With him dead, all her secrets would be buried!
She could still become Nathan's girlfriend. He would be moved to see her personally venturing into the wilderness to find him!
As for Caroline, she would find an opportunity to deal with her sooner or later, and those two kids couldn't be left alive either!
Roxanne stepped over Sawyer and continued along the faint trail towards the source.
Along the way, she shouted loudly, "Help!"
On the other side, John was the first to hear Roxanne's cries for help.
The spot where Sawyer and the others had parachuted was not far from Nathan's camp, but the dense jungle blocked the view, and Roxanne's cries for help came intermittently with the wind.
"Mr. Kennedy, it sounds like someone is calling for help, but it's intermittent," John reported.
"It must be someone who parachuted from the plane. The sound is unclear because of the wind. Determine the wind direction; we should go against the wind to have a better chance of finding them," Nathan analyzed.
"Yes, sir."
As Nathan and his team approached downstream, Roxanne's cries for help became clearer.
"Mr. Kennedy, there's someone there. It looks like a woman!" a team member reported from below.
When Roxanne heard "Mr. Kennedy," she was certain it was Nathan.
She mustered all her strength to shout "Help" one more time before pretending to faint.
When Nathan and his team arrived, they found Roxanne.
"How could it be her?" Nathan said coldly.
"Mr. Kennedy, your girlfriend is truly impressive, finding her way here," John said.
"She is not," Nathan replied coldly.
Hearing Nathan's denial while pretending to be unconscious, Roxanne felt a surge of fear.
"Mr. Kennedy, she seems to need CPR. Should you do it?" John suggested.
"No need; you do it," Nathan said, still coldly.
A wave of disappointment washed over Roxanne.
Nathan could tolerate someone else performing CPR on her right in front of him?
And he just stood by, watching without intervening?
Sensing movement beside her, Roxanne suddenly opened her eyes. "Where am I?"
"You're awake. That's great!" John said with delight.
"Why are you here?" Nathan's voice carried a hint of coldness.
Roxanne got up and ran to Nathan, hugging him tightly. "Nathan, I was worried about you, so I came to find you!"
At that moment, Nathan felt a slight twinge in his heart.
But he still felt suspicious. Roxanne was not the kind of woman who would risk her life for love, and Nathan knew that well.
"Who did you come with?" Nathan asked directly.
"I came with Sawyer. The plane was attacked and caught fire, so we parachuted out."
"Where's Sawyer?" Nathan immediately became tense.
