Chapter 105

At one in the morning, Nathan was taking a nap in bed when the doorbell suddenly rang.

He jumped up and opened the door to find John standing outside.

John's late-night visit must mean something important.

"The scout reported a group of people crossing the border in the neighboring village, and it seems there are children with them."

"Let's go!"

Before John could finish, Nathan had already rushed out the door.

Three cars and a team of people sped away from the inn, blending into the night.

"When did they cross the border?" Nathan asked.

"It's just a rumor, and the exact time is unknown. After all, it's from a scout, and many details are not disclosed," the local assistant replied.

This explanation made sense. If everything was revealed, the other party would also face risks, as this was an illegal activity.

"Speed up," Nathan ordered.

The country road was winding, narrow, and full of sharp turns.

The vehicles were already speeding, but Nathan still urged, "Faster!"

Eventually, he took over the wheel from the driver.

John, a former mercenary with excellent driving skills, found Nathan even more adept.

Several times, the vehicle nearly lost control, but Nathan managed to stabilize it instantly.

Nathan led the way, with the bodyguard team following closely behind, gradually feeling exhausted.

John quickly used the walkie-talkie to inform the following cars not to forcefully keep up to avoid accidents.

Just over ten miles from the target, an unexpected situation occurred.

A truck was blocking the road, cutting off their path.

This place was remote, and it would take time for the police to arrive.

Moreover, the truck was loaded with sand and stones, making it impossible to move even if the police arrived.

Strangely, the driver was nowhere to be seen.

Nathan immediately asked John to check the map for an alternate route.

However, the surrounding area was dense with forests, and this was the only viable road.

Besides, there were no villages nearby.

Where was the sand and stone on the truck supposed to go? It was clear someone had deliberately blocked the road.

"Get out, we're walking. Contact backup and request helicopter support." Nathan ordered.

"Using aircraft at the border is sensitive and requires complex approval procedures," John reminded.

"Action first, explanations later. Rescuing people is the priority, and I'll take responsibility," Nathan said firmly.

"Understood," John agreed.

Everyone got out of the cars and headed forward on foot.

After walking a few miles, the road became narrower, and after another mile ahead, it ended abruptly.

The local guide led Nathan through the forest, where there seemed to be no path, but under the guide's lead, they bent down and passed through dense thorns.

Along the way, the local guide kept warning everyone to watch out for poisonous snakes.

Thinking about the children being taken through such a dangerous path, Nathan's heart ached.

The forest grew denser, and the sky was obscured, as if they had entered a dark underworld.

"Look, this is the border line," the local guide shone a flashlight ahead.

A tall barbed wire fence came into view, with a man-made hole at the bottom, large enough to pass through.

Nathan stepped forward and noticed a piece of cloth hanging on the barbed wire. He picked it up and brought it close to his nose, inhaling deeply the scent of orange blossoms.

"How long will it take to find a road on the other side?" Nathan asked.

The local guide shook his head. "There's never a road. Deeper in is an uninhabited mountain area, I've never been there."

"How did they retreat?"

"There's a deep valley nearby with an open area suitable for helicopter landings. This route is the most dangerous but also the safest. Once airborne, it's hard to track, so the cost is high," the local guide explained.

"Let's go," Nathan ordered.

But instead of moving forward, he turned back.

John was puzzled. Were they giving up?

"Contact backup, confirm the location, and find a landing spot," Nathan said.

"Are we going to fly across the border?" John was surprised.

"We can't pursue them any other way," Nathan replied.

The local guide quickly tried to dissuade them, "There's frequent fighting over there, and planes fly back and forth often. Not long ago, a bomb was mistakenly dropped on our village. Flying over is extremely dangerous and could easily be misunderstood and shot down."

"Yes, there are frequent cross-border flights here, extremely dangerous. Recently, even a civilian flight was shot down," John added.

Nathan ignored them.

John kept silent, knowing that no one could sway Nathan's determination.

Exiting the forest, everyone felt exhausted.

The helicopter was already on standby. Nathan said to John, "You take a few people with me, the rest stay here for support."

"We can go, you stay. We'll definitely bring them back safely," John tried to dissuade.

Nathan waved his hand, indicating no need to say more.

Then, he asked the pilot to step aside and took the pilot's seat himself.

John felt uneasy; this was a helicopter, not a car. Could he really handle it?

He saw Nathan's stern face and swallowed his words.

Nathan first checked the instruments, then started the operation.

Clearly, he was not very familiar with flying, as helicopters were not something one drove every day.

Amidst the loud roar, the helicopter took off, and John's heart raced, fearing a crash.

Fortunately, it rose steadily, and after a brief adjustment, Nathan was able to control it skillfully.

Soon, a firelight appeared ahead.

A fire in a no-man's land was rare.

Where there's fire, there must be people, but ordinary people would never set a fire here.

The firelight became a beacon, guiding the helicopter's descent.

The local guide had said that those crossing the border this way couldn't climb the mountains and could only be picked up by helicopter.

Those who set the fire must be waiting for rescue.

The dense jungle didn't allow fires everywhere; it was too dangerous.

So, a flammable area must be an open space, the landing spot the local guide mentioned.

However, only the firelight was visible, nothing else.

If it wasn't a landing spot, descending rashly would be extremely dangerous.

John was anxious, unsure how Nathan would decide.

Nathan was also hesitant, lacking concrete evidence that the fire was a helicopter landing marker. If his judgment was wrong and they encountered obstacles while landing, the entire crew could be in danger. But if they didn't land and missed this opportunity, finding Caroline and the others later would be even more difficult.

Nathan chose not to land but continued flying the helicopter forward.

John secretly felt relieved, understanding the high risk of landing at that moment.

However, not long after, Nathan suddenly turned the helicopter around and headed back.

"Everyone, I plan to attempt a forced landing. This action is extremely dangerous. If more than half of you oppose, we will return immediately," Nathan's voice came clearly through the headset.

The cabin fell silent, everyone looking at each other, no one speaking.

The Kennedy Family's security team were all elites, not ones to shrink from danger.

Usually, they enjoyed the generous benefits provided by the Kennedy Family, while with almost nothing to do.

Now, at this critical moment, how could they retreat?

"Mr. Kennedy, go ahead and land. Come what may, we stand with you," one team member said firmly.

"That's right, we'll face any danger with you."

"Yes, a man doesn't back down."

Nathan turned to John, "What about you?"
