Chapter 135

"Let's go with Nathan's suggestion then. The kids will stay with the Kennedy Family, and we'll give her a generous settlement to ensure she's taken care of for the rest of her life," Aiden replied.

Nick didn't respond. His intuition told him that Caroline would never accept such an arrangement. If it really came to that, how would she react?

That seemingly fragile yet remarkably resilient Caroline could do anything if pushed to the brink.

Nick couldn't help but feel a bit worried. He didn't want things to get out of control, and he certainly didn't want the kids to be affected.

"Nick?" Aiden raised his voice, bringing the distracted Nick back to reality.

"Grandpa, no matter the outcome, I will consider it carefully. Please don't worry."

"Good, I trust you can handle it. Discuss more with Nathan; he's better at handling things rationally," Aiden said.

Nick gave a wry smile. "Grandpa, how has he ever been better than me since we were kids?"

While Nick and Aiden were discussing Nathan, he was in his office sipping coffee.

His assistant, Jack, kept glancing at his watch. Overtime had long passed, but Nathan showed no signs of leaving.

As the night wore on, cup after cup of coffee, Nathan seemed completely awake.

Jack didn't dare to make a move unless his boss gave the order.

Nathan looked up, his gaze meeting the stiff Jack. "Why are you still here?"

Jack was on the verge of tears. He had wanted to leave long ago, but since Nathan hadn't said anything, how could he dare to leave on his own?

"I like working overtime," Jack's smile was the epitome of insincerity.

"Have they arrived?" Nathan seemed absent-minded.

Nathan's erratic thinking was hard for most people to follow, but Jack could keep up. He knew "they" referred to Nick and the others.

"Yes, Mr. Aiden Kennedy wanted to have dinner with you, but you said you had something to do, so he declined," Jack reminded cautiously.

He was a bit worried. His boss had an excellent memory, so how could he forget something from just two hours ago?

"Alright," Nathan responded softly, falling silent again.

"Mr. Nathan Kennedy, it's late. Shouldn't you go home and rest? You've been working too hard lately," Jack suggested carefully.

Nathan didn't answer. His thoughts drifted back to the days he spent with Caroline.

Seeing Nathan silent, Jack didn't dare to say more, even though he was eager to leave.

"Why did I refuse to go home for dinner?" Nathan suddenly asked Jack.

Jack was stunned. How should he answer that?

"Because you're too busy with work," Jack tried to respond.

"Oh," Nathan replied, once again falling into deep thought.

Jack was puzzled. What was wrong with Nathan today? First, he forgot things, and now he was asking such simple questions.

The influential figure of Aurora City seemed so out of sorts today. Was he just not himself?

"You're too tired. You should rest," Jack urged again.

"Alright, you can go," Nathan waved his hand.

Jack wanted to leave, but seeing Nathan still sitting there, he felt embarrassed to leave alone.

"I'm fine. I'll stay. If you need anything, I can handle it immediately," Jack said.

Nathan responded, then suddenly asked Jack, "Do you have a girlfriend?"

Jack was even more surprised. Nathan never asked about personal matters. He was someone who didn't care about gossip and had no time for it.

"No," Jack answered honestly.

"Why?" Nathan pressed.

"I've dated a few girlfriends, but we broke up because we weren't compatible," Jack explained.

"So, you liked them?" Nathan asked seriously.

Jack quickly nodded. "Of course, I dated them because I liked them."

"What does it feel like to like someone?" Nathan suddenly asked earnestly.

This really stumped Jack. How could someone as god-like as Nathan ask such a simple question? What was the meaning behind this? Jack couldn't figure it out.

"You have never liked anyone?"

"I'm asking you," Nathan said coldly.

"It's about wanting to be with her all the time, sharing everything and caring about her feelings," Jack explained.

Nathan waved his hand, interrupting Jack, his brow furrowed.

Clearly, he was not satisfied with Jack's answer. Such general talk seemed dull to him.

Deep down, he wanted the answer to be: Liking someone meant even liking the scent on her. But he was also afraid to hear such an answer.

Nathan stepped into the Elegant Mountain Estate to find it was already 1 AM.

Surprisingly, Nick was still awake, sitting alone in the garden pavilion, accompanied by the moonlight, drinking alone.

Nick usually preferred private and luxurious places for wine tasting, with a beautiful companion by his side. This solitary drinking scene was rare.

Nathan walked slowly into the pavilion.

"I've been waiting for you," Nick's voice carried a hint of drunkenness.

"Why are you drinking alone here?" Nathan asked curiously.

"The kids came home safely, and Grandpa was so happy that he brought out a bottle of twenty-year-old wine to celebrate. But he has high blood pressure and can't drink, so I thought it would be a waste not to drink the opened wine. I wanted to wait for you to share it," Nick explained.

Nathan sat down and got himself a glass.

The wine's aroma filled the air even before it reached the glass. It was rich with a lingering finish—truly a fine wine.

"Something on your mind?" Nathan asked gently, putting down his glass.

"Demi brought the kids home, but according to the Kennedy Family rules, she can't enter the main hall without being married. She can only stay in the west wing," Nick frowned slightly.

Nathan nodded lightly, not surprised.

"As the kids's mother, treating her like this is too unfair. She carried the kids for ten months and raised him with great effort, yet she doesn't even have the right to sit at the same table with the kids. Such a rule is absurd," Nick said, his tone unable to hide his agitation.

Nathan gently pressed his hand, signaling him to lower his voice.

"Not all rules in the world are reasonable. Since they exist, there must be a reason for them, even if they are unreasonable," Nathan said as he refilled their glasses.

Nick shook his head with a bitter smile. "Talking to you about this is pointless. I know that you never liked Demi."

"Demi is not her real name. She is actually Roxanne's half-sister, and her name is Caroline," Nathan revealed.

"Really?" Nick seemed a bit surprised.

"You don't even know her real name. How can you be sure she's the right partner for you? Just because she's the mother of your kids?" Nathan asked.
