Chapter 133
Despite his numerous grievances, Nathan's goal was achieved as Sawyer agreed to leave.
"Mom, I'm leaving now," Sawyer said to Caroline, reluctant to part.
Caroline, both amused and exasperated, replied, "Go on. I hope next time we meet, you won't call me Mom! I don't want to be misunderstood again!"
"Bye, Mom," Sawyer waved his hand in farewell.
Caroline, helpless, said, "Bye-bye, hurry up and go."
"I'll see Nathan off," Ryan volunteered.
Caroline was taken aback but then nodded. If Ryan knew to be polite, how could she fall behind?
The group arrived at the rooftop, where a private jet was already waiting.
"Nathan, have a good trip," Ryan said, waving.
Before boarding the plane, Nathan turned back to hug Ryan. "See you tomorrow!" Then he hugged Sophie and said, "Try to eat fewer snacks, okay? Otherwise, your stomach might bother you."
Sophie shyly defended herself. "I really didn't eat that much!"
Seeing Sophie's adorable look, Nathan couldn't help but smile. These two were really his source of joy.
However, when he turned to Caroline, his face returned to its usual coldness. He waved at Nick.
Even if he was displeased, Nathan never lacked basic manners.
The plane thundered into the night sky, slicing through the darkness.
Caroline and the group returned to the dining room, and she suddenly felt like having a drink. The stress of the recent jungle adventure and the looming custody battle in Aurora City were weighing heavily on her, and she just wanted to drown her sorrows in alcohol.
Nick immediately ordered the waiter to bring the finest red wine.
"Come, cheers. You've had a hard time raising the kids alone all these years," Nick raised his glass in tribute.
"That's an understatement. I won't drink your wine," Caroline declined.
"Then what should I say?"
"You should support me and not let the kids leave me. They are my whole world," Caroline said, still emotional about the matter.
"I really do understand. I never intended to take the kids from you. They've always been yours," Nick responded sincerely.
"Then why didn't you speak up for me earlier?"
"He's my brother. You know his temperament. We can only outsmart him, not confront him directly! If we confront him head-on, no one in Aurora City can match him, including us!"
Caroline frowned.
"So we should let the kids go to your house because we can't provoke him?" Caroline retorted.
"Our house is fantastic—it's spacious and has dozens of rooms to choose from. If you move in, you'll be closer to the kids. My place is way better than that tiny, rundown apartment you're in now!" Nick said excitedly.
"Move to your house?"
"Yes, you're going to be my wife in the future. My wife should live in my house! As the future Mrs. Kennedy, you'll hold a position that many girls in Aurora City dream of!"
Caroline had no doubts. The Kennedys were the pinnacle of Silver Lake City's elite, and marrying into the family was like entering a world of opulence. Even as Nathan's supposed girlfriend, Roxanne was already enjoying boundless prestige.
But Caroline didn't want that, not at all.
It wasn't that she didn't like a luxurious life; that would be too contrary to human nature.
Caroline understood that once she stepped into a wealthy family, she would gain a lot but also bear more burdens.
Moreover, Nathan had already decided she had ulterior motives. If she really married into the family, Nathan would probably make her life difficult in every way possible.
The future seemed uncertain, but she was sure it wouldn't be pleasant.
More importantly, she didn't like the flashy and insubstantial Nick in front of her.
Despite his good looks and wealth, she didn't like him.
After all, marriage was a lifelong matter. Everything else could be compromised, but not this.
"Did you agree?" Seeing Caroline's silence, Nick mistakenly thought he had her consent.
"No, I won't marry you," Caroline said firmly.
Nick sighed. "Why? You always give the same reason; it's so inexplicable! Did I say all that for nothing?"
Caroline took a sip of her wine. "I won't marry you because you're not my type."
"Then who do you want to marry?" Nick asked warily.
Caroline shook her head. "I don't know!"
"But marrying me is the key to solving the problem. Only by becoming part of the Kennedy Family can you reunite with the kids and avoid direct conflict with Nathan. Once you're my wife, everything will be reasonable."
Nick's sincerity was evident, but Caroline still shook her head. She didn't plan to take that path because it was far from smooth.
"What's wrong with me?" Nick was unwilling to give up.
"You're great—handsome, wealthy, from a prestigious family. The only flaw is that you're too frivolous," Caroline said bluntly.
"Nobody's perfect. I call it being lively, not frivolous!" Nick defended himself.
"Exactly!" Sophie, who had been holding back for a long time, finally found a chance to chime in.
Both Nick and Caroline were taken aback. They had been so engrossed in their conversation that they forgot there were two little listeners nearby!
Talking about such matters in front of the kids was indeed inappropriate.
Fortunately, Ryan and Sophie were sensible. Even if they didn't say it out loud, they seemed to understand.
Sophie favored Nick more, while Ryan admired Nathan. Caroline knew this well.
"I'm not saying you're bad. Whether you're good or not has nothing to do with whether I marry you. It's like this expensive wine; to someone who doesn't drink, it's meaningless," Caroline said, swirling her wine glass, implying something deeper.
Nick seemed to understand somewhat. "Alright, it looks like I need to cultivate your love for wine, and then you'll accept my unique 'vintage.'"
The next day, despite her reluctance, Caroline had to board the return flight with the group.
Upon arriving in Silver Lake City, the helicopter slowly descended onto the grand helipad in the Kennedy Family's backyard.
As the cabin door opened, Charles had already led a group of servants to welcome them.
As usual, she needed to bathe and change before meeting the dignified elder of the family.
Caroline looked around. The Kennedy Mansion was like a modern-day luxurious manor, with several independent yet interconnected buildings spread out in an orderly manner, a clever design.
A professionally trained nanny gently took Ryan and Sophie away, while Caroline was led to another side.
This was the Kennedy Family tradition. Ryan and Sophie had their own professional service system, so Caroline didn't need to do everything herself.
Caroline was taken to an elegant room on the west side. A servant offered to help her bathe and change, but she declined, preferring the independence and freedom.
After changing, she waited quietly in the west room, surrounded by silence.
Before long, Nick entered.
"Ryan and Sophie are playing with my grandpa. I was worried you'd be lonely here, so I came to keep you company," Nick said gently.
