Chapter 83
"Yeah, Mr. Kennedy didn't just send flowers; he also gave this massive diamond ring. Seriously, it was bigger than a pigeon egg! None of us had ever seen a diamond that huge!" The staff member was still buzzing from the excitement of the previous day.
"Are you sure you didn't mess it up?" Sawyer was still doubtful.
The staff member replied, "The whole crew saw it, no way it's wrong. I even recorded a video, but William won't let me share it."
Sawyer said, "Show me."
The staff member handed over the video, and as soon as Sawyer saw Nick's over-the-top behavior, he blurted out, "Nick's back?"
"What?" Now it was the staff member's turn to be confused.
"Never mind, get back to work," Sawyer waved him off.
Just then, Caroline walked onto the set, and Sawyer immediately pulled her aside.
"What are you doing? Everyone's watching, you should be more careful," Caroline said.
"What's your deal with my uncle?" Sawyer cornered Caroline against the wall, looking serious.
"What are you talking about?" Caroline was just as confused.
"What's your relationship with Nick?" Sawyer pressed.
Caroline was puzzled. Except for Roxanne, the crew mistook Nick for Nathan. Sawyer had just returned; how could he have known it?
"Do you know Nick? Are you related to the Kennedy Family?" Caroline shot back.
Sawyer remembered Nathan's warning; he couldn't reveal his connection to the Kennedy Family, so he quickly denied it, "I don't know him."
Caroline pinned Sawyer against the wall. "You're lying; you have a close relationship with the Kennedy Family!"
Sawyer replied, "No, I don't!"
Caroline insisted, "No way. If you weren't close to the Kennedy Family, how would you know it was Nick and not Nathan? And, is your uncle Nick?"
Sawyer shook his head. "No."
"Do you think you can fool me? I'll call Nick right now, and we'll see!" Caroline threatened.
Sawyer realized his secret would eventually come out, so he decided to come clean.
"It was Nathan who told me to keep it a secret. You can't tell anyone about my connection to the Kennedy Family," Sawyer quickly explained.
"Wow! You're really Nick's nephew?" Caroline was shocked.
"Yeah, but not many people know," Sawyer replied.
"You've hidden it well. Are you a spy sent by that iceberg? No wonder he knows so much about me; it's all thanks to you!" Caroline furiously slapped his back with her palm.
"Why do you always resort to violence! I didn't snitch! And who is the iceberg?" Sawyer shouted.
"Nathan is the iceberg! Can't you see how cold he is?" Caroline yelled.
Sawyer was stunned. "You're so bold! You dare call Nathan an iceberg. If he finds out, you're done for!"
"Didn't you say you didn't snitch? How else would he know it?" Caroline raised her hand again.
"I didn't say anything! Don't hit me! You have serious violent tendencies!" Sawyer protested.
Caroline lowered her hand. "I haven't heard that Nathan has any sisters. Where did you come from?"
"I have no blood relation to Nathan and the Kennedy Family," Sawyer explained.
Caroline was confused. "What?"
"I'm not totally sure about all the details. Long story short, my mom and her biological brother were adopted by the Kennedy Family before Nathan and Nick were born. Later, when Nathan and Nick came along, to avoid favoritism, Nathan was considered the third child, and Nick the fourth. So, I call Nick uncle. Got it?"
Caroline took a moment to process and pulled out two main points from his words.
First, Nathan's older sister and brother were adopted, not biological Kennedy's kids.
Second, Sawyer had no blood relation to Nathan and Nick.
But the adopted Kennedy kids had never been seen, which seemed fishy. Caroline sensed something was off.
Still, it was a family matter, and she didn't want to pry too much.
"So, you're Ryan and Sophie's cousin? So, that kind of makes you my nephew?" Caroline teased.
Sawyer was almost floored by the term "nephew" and stood there in shock for a few seconds.
He then protested, "Don't even think about it!"
Caroline couldn't help but smile at Sawyer's reaction.
"You'd better be polite to me from now on. After all, I am your elder," Caroline took advantage of the situation and adopted a superior attitude.
"In your dreams!" Sawyer was visibly anxious.
"I have a crucial question that you must answer honestly," Caroline grabbed Sawyer's collar, looking fierce.
"Let go! Why are you so violent?" Sawyer protested.
Caroline continued, "Answer me seriously. If I have a conflict with Nathan, who will you help?"
Sawyer frowned. "Can you ask another question? This one is too hard."
Caroline insisted, "You must answer, who will you help?"
"This is a hypothetical question; it's not real," Sawyer spread his hands helplessly.
Caroline asked, "What do you mean?"
"If you really have a conflict with Nathan, does it matter whose side I'm on? You're bound to lose anyway! Even if everyone in Aurora City helps you, against Nathan, you're sure to lose. So, the best answer is, you'd better not have a conflict with Nathan, so you can live peacefully," Sawyer concluded seriously.
Caroline almost laughed at his twisted logic, but she realized he had a point.
"Aren't we good friends?" Caroline persisted, her eyes sharp.
"Of course, but when was the last time you played games with me?" Sawyer replied.
Caroline spoke, "If we're good friends, you shouldn't let me get bullied, right?"
"What are you up to now?" Sawyer seemed a bit guilty. "Are you trying to make me go against Nathan? Why do you pick the hardest person in Aurora City to deal with?"
Caroline pressed, "You'll protect me from getting hurt, right?"
Sawyer responded, "What if I say no?"
"Then I'll 'hurt' you right now!" Caroline waved her fist.
"Okay, okay, we're good friends. Of course, I'll protect you from getting hurt," Sawyer smiled wryly.
"Then you'll be my inside man in the Kennedy Family!" Caroline finally smiled with satisfaction.
Sawyer was surprised. "Inside man?"
"Yes, I might have some dealings with the Kennedy Family. They are very powerful, and I can't handle them alone, so I need a helper. You have to help me gather information," Caroline explained.
"It's hard for me," Sawyer looked troubled.
"You promised, are you going back on your word?" Caroline questioned.
