Chapter 168
After the doctor left, Sawyer looked at Caroline with a face full of shame. "You can't make fun of me!"
"Of course, I won't make fun of you, you're just sick; it's not your fault," Caroline said gently.
"Then you take me ou...out for barbecue!"
Caroline was stunned for a moment. She thought Sawyer wanted her to keep some secret, but his request was to take him out for a barbecue.
What did eating barbecue have to do with stuttering? Could a barbecue cure stuttering?
Seeing Caroline hesitate, Sawyer's face immediately turned unpleasant. "I just knew you...you would look down...on me!" He stammered.
Caroline sighed deeply, feeling a sense of helplessness. Every time Sawyer got stuck while speaking, Caroline felt as exhausted as if she were stuck herself.
If she felt this tired, one could only imagine how frustrated the once talkative Sawyer must feel now.
She suddenly understood why Sawyer didn't like to talk anymore. For him, every sentence was a struggle, and he had to go through so many of them every day. No wonder he was exhausted.
"You didn't like barbecue before, did you?" Caroline asked, frowning.
"I like it now," Sawyer replied.
"You suddenly want to eat barbecue?"
"Yes."
"You're not stuttering?" Caroline asked in surprise.
"More words will stutter," Sawyer said with a bitter smile.
Caroline bit her lip, now she understood. No wonder he always spoke so briefly.
"You're laughing at me!" Sawyer saw Caroline biting her lip and realized she was holding back a laugh, angrily saying.
Caroline quickly waved her hand. "No, no, I'm really not laughing at you. After all, we're good friends, I can understand your struggle. I was just thinking, if that's the case, you must be really good at summarizing when you speak."
"You're just making fun...of me!" Sawyer got even angrier, and speaking longer triggered severe stuttering.
His very delicate face turned red, all the way down to his neck, making her feel a sudden sense of pity.
She said, "I'm really not laughing at you. If you want to eat barbecue, why don't you go out and eat it yourself?"
"Uncle won't let me!"
Caroline was stunned for a moment, then realized he referred to Nathan.
"He won't let you go out, or he won't let you eat barbecue?" Caroline asked.
"Both!"
"Okay, from now on, you should speak briefly like this, so you won't get tired of speaking, and I won't get tired of listening. But why won't Nathan let you go out? You should be able to be discharged now, right?"
"Uncle won't let me." Still the same phrase.
It seemed that brief communication was indeed very difficult, so Caroline had to think for herself.
Sawyer was a top celebrity, and Nathan not letting him go out was natural to protect him. If fans knew their idol had become a stutterer, his commercial value might quickly decline.
Fans couldn't tolerate any flaws in their idols, even smoking in public could cause a stir, let alone a stuttering problem.
The more fans, the higher the topic, the greater the possibility of backlash. Once he was backlashed, the consequences would be unimaginable. So the safest way was not to let Sawyer face anyone.
Originally, Caroline was also excluded, but later Caroline was too fierce, so they had to let her in.
Now Sawyer proposed that she take him out for barbecue, this was no small matter. If she really took him out and something happened, Nathan would definitely not let her off.
"Agree?" Sawyer couldn't wait any longer.
Caroline shook her head. "No, let's wait until you recover, then we'll go out."
Sawyer looked disappointed, then angry, pointing to the door. "You go!"
Caroline was surprised. Why did he suddenly turn hostile?
"What's wrong with you? I want to take you out, but Nathan won't let me because of your condition."
"You're not...my friend! You're not...loyal enough!" Sawyer stammered angrily.
Caroline looked innocent. "Sure, I'm your friend. Our bond runs deep and will always be there. Once you get better, I'll take you to the best barbecue in all of Aurora City! Not just one meal, but for three days—no, an entire month!"
She pictured in her mind eating barbecue with Sawyer for a whole month, and suddenly felt a bit terrified.
"I don't believe it!" To avoid stuttering, Sawyer returned to a brief speech.
"Why? When you get better, I'll definitely take you. Be good." Caroline reached out to touch Sawyer's head, but he pushed her away irritably.
"You go!" Sawyer's emotions were indeed unstable, which was understandable. From a chatterbox to a stutterer, who could accept this cruel fact?
"Don't be like this, Sway," Caroline said helplessly.
"Pay back the money!"
This sentence caught Caroline off guard, and she was stunned. She almost forgot she still owed him hundreds of thousands of dollars!
Caroline instantly cowered, quickly smiling apologetically. "Don't be like this. We're great friends, and nothing will ever change that."
"Pay back the money!"
Caroline's words were ruthlessly interrupted by Sawyer. He roared as he climbed out of the hospital bed, standing barefoot in front of Caroline, his hand reaching for her face.
Now it was clear, he wouldn't let her go; he wanted her to pay back the money!
She couldn't afford to offend him!
Caroline smiled, gently prying Sawyer's hand away. "You really shouldn't be like this. We can discuss it."
"Barbecue!" Sawyer demanded.
Although it was just a brief sentence, the meaning was clear, either she paid back the money, or took him to eat barbecue!
"Well, wa...wait a moment!" Caroline found that under Sawyer's threat, she actually started to stutter too!
She took out her phone and dialed Nick's number.
This matter had to be done, at least with one person's support, and that person was Nick.
With Nick's support, even if Nathan found out, she could shift the blame onto him, minimizing the risk!
