Chapter 63
"Sure thing," Nathan felt a wave of relief hearing Sophie's excitement.
"I'll add you on Facebook and send you the location. I can use your phone number to find you, right?"
Nathan glanced at Jack, feeling a bit lost since he rarely used Facebook and definitely hadn't set up an account with this particular phone.
Jack quickly fiddled with his phone, logging into a backup Facebook account that had the Kennedy Corp logo as the profile picture.
Nathan said, "My Facebook account is..."
Soon enough, his other phone buzzed with Sophie's friend request. He accepted it, and the location info popped up right after.
Jack chimed in, "Mr. Kennedy, we're really running out of time."
"Cancel it," Nathan said curtly.
Jack tried to reason with him, "But you already agreed."
Nathan was firm, "Cancel the Avaloria trip."
It turned out Nathan wasn't bailing on dinner but ditching the trip to Avaloria.
Jack was floored. Nathan knew how crucial the Avaloria royal banquet was, yet he was ready to skip the whole trip for a meal.
"Mr. Kennedy, if you don't attend the banquet, it might be hard to explain to the royal family," Jack cautioned.
"Let Leo go in my place," Nathan replied calmly.
Leo, who ran Kennedy Corp's Avaloria division, was a key player in the company.
Jack argued, "Mr. Leo Kennedy might not be able to fill your shoes. You're the face and spirit of Kennedy Corp; no one can replace you at such a big event, especially with a royal invite."
Nathan waved his hand and shut his eyes.
Jack knew better than to push further.
That gesture meant Nathan was deep in thought.
As the head of Kennedy Corp, Nathan understood the risks of breaking a promise to the royal family. He needed a solid plan.
A few seconds later, Nathan opened his eyes. "I'm severely ill."
Just one sentence, but Jack got the message.
Using Nathan's severe illness as an excuse, they could make it so that the royal family wouldn't push the issue.
It wasn't about disrespect; it was a legit reason. Who could avoid getting sick?
But while this might smooth things over with the royal family, it brought up a new problem. Claiming Nathan was severely ill required an official statement. Otherwise, the royal family might not buy it.
As the face of Kennedy Corp, news of Nathan's severe illness would definitely shake up the stock market.
How much would the stock drop? How long would it last? How bad would the losses be? All of this was up in the air.
The stock market had no hard and fast rules.
So, was it worth risking stock market chaos for a dinner by faking Nathan's severe illness?
"Mr. Kennedy, are we really doing this?" Jack asked again.
Nathan stayed silent.
Silence meant yes; no more words needed.
Jack didn't dare argue further. He told the driver to head to the location sent via Facebook and alerted the CEO's office to prepare an announcement about Nathan's severe illness.
The CEO's office went into a frenzy. Mr. Nathan Kennedy was clearly in good spirits; how could he suddenly be severely ill?
The neighborhood where Sarah lived had never seen a Rolls-Royce parked there before.
Today, a Rolls-Royce rolled into the neighborhood, trailed by two luxury SUVs, clearly the rides of bodyguards and assistants.
Jack scoped out the buildings and surroundings, surprised that the woman Nathan held in such high regard lived in such an ordinary place.
What kind of woman could make Nathan ditch a royal banquet just to have dinner with her?
Soon, a stunning woman appeared.
Two kids showed up too. They had similar faces, with perfect features and flawless skin. Their smooth, long hair, gem-like eyes, petite noses, and pink little mouths made them look like little angels.
The woman behind them, though, was a different story. She had short hair and a strong build—not fat, but definitely not soft. Her features were striking and beautiful, but she had a tough vibe, walking with a powerful stride.
Jack couldn't help but frown. Ryan and Sophie's mom seemed a bit manly?
She looked familiar, but he couldn't place her.
Even though they had met briefly on set, Jack's memory wasn't as sharp as Nathan's, and he didn't immediately recognize her as Caroline's agent, Sarah.
Sarah, however, remembered Jack because Nathan often communicated through him on set. Jack had left a strong impression on her.
Sarah greeted, "Hello."
Even someone as tough as Sarah felt a bit nervous facing Jack, a core executive of Kennedy Corp and Nathan's close confidant.
Jack nodded slightly. "Hello."
He then bent down to greet Ryan and Sophie, "Hello."
Two identical little faces stared back at him, and Jack felt a moment of disorientation.
Then he smiled. Ryan was like a mini Nathan, with the same cold gaze, tightly pressed lips, and expressionless face.
Jack saw that look every day, and now seeing a mini version of it amused him greatly.
Instantly, he got why Nathan canceled the royal gathering. These little kids were enough for Nathan to ditch all important plans.
"Are you Ryan and Sophie's mom?" Jack asked.
Sarah replied, "No, I'm not. Their mom is filming. I'm her friend, Sarah."
"Nice to meet you. Please come in," Jack said, making an inviting gesture.
"I won't go in. Please send my regards to Mr. Nathan Kennedy," Sarah responded with a smile.
Jack immediately took a liking to Sarah. She seemed carefree but was actually very thoughtful.
It was clear that Nathan's invitation was for Ryan and Sophie, and since she wasn't their mom, if she forced her way into the dinner, it would make her purpose to have Nathan owe her a favor too obvious.
With Nathan's manners, he would have treated her politely at the table, but whether he would have been annoyed was another story.
Sarah chose to step back, giving Ryan and Sophie space to be alone with Nathan, which would surely please Nathan.
If Nathan was happy, he might remember Sarah, and if an opportunity arose in the future, a little help from Nathan could make Sarah's future limitless.
This was clearly the move of a wise person.
However, Jack couldn't decide this on his own and needed to check with Nathan.
So, he quickly ran to Nathan's car and conveyed Sarah's message.
Soon, he returned.
"Mr. Kennedy asked me to thank you. If you need any help, feel free to contact me. Here's my card." Jack said as he handed over an elegant business card.
