Chapter 30
So, Roxanne had this whole grand entrance planned in her head, expecting the staff to roll out the red carpet and all, but didn't happen.
Jack picked her up from the parking lot, swiped his card for the fancy executive elevator, and they headed straight to Nathan's office.
This was Roxanne's first time in the Kennedy Corp's power hub. Orders from here ran the show for all their branches worldwide.
Nathan, looking sharp in his black suit, was buried in some documents when they walked in. Even focused, the guy was a total heartthrob.
"Mr. Kennedy, Ms. Campbell's here," Jack said softly.
Nathan put down his papers and gave a slight nod. Jack got the hint and slipped out quietly.
"Wow, your office is huge and so stylish. I love it," Roxanne gushed.
Nathan glanced around his nearly 2,000 square foot office. His younger brother Nick Kennedy had decked it out before heading abroad, dropping over ten million bucks on the renovation. It was super swanky.
Nathan had been at some high-end forum overseas when the office got its makeover. When he got back and saw the extravagance, he was so pissed he shipped Nick off to a far-flung branch.
To Nathan, an office was for work, not for throwing parties. He wasn't a fan of the decor at all.
Hearing Roxanne rave about it, Nathan's brow twitched, but he kept quiet. They were just different people, nothing more to say.
Nathan, never much of a talker, felt even less chatty now. He hit a button on his desk, and Jack came back in.
Nathan pointed to a photo on the desk, signaling Jack to handle it while he listened.
Nathan had questions for Roxanne but didn't want to ask them himself, so he had Jack do it. Roxanne felt totally disrespected.
Jack was in a tough spot too; he didn't want this job, but he couldn't ignore Nathan's orders.
"Ms. Campbell, we need you to check out this photo," Jack said, handing it to her.
Roxanne's face changed the moment she saw it. Her worst fear had come true.
Nathan noticed her reaction but stayed stone-faced.
"This is my photo," Roxanne said, trying to keep her cool and forcing a smile.
Jack thought, 'Duh, anyone can see that.'
"And the kid?" Jack asked.
"Oh, that was a kid I ran into at the airport. There were tons of fans, and the kid got scared and fell. I'm a nice person, so I picked her up, and someone snapped this pic," Roxanne explained.
Jack glanced at Nathan, who was still buried in his documents, not looking to jump in.
Jack was stuck. He had a good idea of what Nathan wanted to know, but some questions Nathan should ask himself. Jack didn't want to risk offending Roxanne, Nathan's supposed girlfriend.
He couldn't ask too bluntly, but he had to dig a bit. "Ms. Campbell, when you were holding this kid, did you feel anything special?"
"He was cute. I liked him," Roxanne said.
"That's it?"
"Yeah, just a kid. What's so special about that?" Roxanne played dumb.
