Chapter 29
Nathan stretched out his long fingers, first pointing at Sophie, then at the kid in the old photo. He shot a look at Jack.
Jack got the hint right away. "They just look alike; they're not the same person. The kid in the old photo is you, but the one Ms. Campbell's holding isn't."
Feeling like he might've put his foot in his mouth, Jack quickly added, "I mean, the kid in Roxanne's photo is real, not photoshopped. That's why I had to tell you."
Nathan laced his fingers together, his usual thinking pose. "Investigate it."
"Got it, Mr. Kennedy." Jack was about to grab the photo, but Nathan's hand stopped him. Jack had to settle for snapping a pic with his phone.
Being quick on the draw was a must to keep up with Nathan. An hour later, Jack had the basics from the team.
"Ms. Campbell ran into this kid at the airport. Lots of reporters were there. The kid fell, Ms. Campbell picked him up, but there is no connection between them," Jack reported.
Nathan stayed silent, signaling for more.
Jack continued, "Ms. Campbell's a superstar. Picking up a kid shows she's got a heart."
Nathan waved him off, not needing the obvious spelled out. He knew the celebrity game well enough.
Jack went on, "But here's the weird part: the photos didn't blow up online like usual. They popped up on some social media, then got pulled down fast. Someone didn't want them out there. Maybe Ms. Campbell saw the kid looked like you and didn't want to stir up trouble, so she had the photos taken down."
Nathan waved him off again. He didn't need Jack's theories, especially since they were off the mark.
Nathan knew Roxanne would milk any chance for attention. If she noticed the kid looked like him, she'd use it to create buzz, making people think the kid was his, especially since they were seen as a couple. But she kept it quiet.
If Roxanne had really cared about Nathan's feelings, she'd have bragged about it. But she kept it under wraps. That was fishy, and fishy meant problems.
Nathan needed to get to the bottom of it.
"Get Roxanne over here," Nathan ordered.
"Yes, Mr. Kennedy," Jack replied.
When Roxanne got Jack's call saying Nathan wanted her at the headquarters, she was over the moon.
Even though Nathan had her play the part of his girlfriend, he never let her get too close.
Nathan never let her into his office or home. Sometimes, he'd need a date for an event, and she'd get to hold his arm. But after, he'd leave her hanging.
Today, Nathan actually wanted her at his office. She'd finally show up at Kennedy Corp as the boss's girlfriend. Roxanne was thrilled.
