Chapter 86
Sawyer shot back, "Nah, I don't think so. If Nathan knew you were in there, he'd totally open the door."
Caroline nodded, still feeling uneasy. She couldn't shake the gut feeling that Nathan already knew she was inside.
"I should get going. It's late. Who knew playing a game with you would be such a rush," Caroline sighed, grabbing her bag.
"Why not crash here? That room over there is all yours," Sawyer suggested.
Caroline shook her head, "No way. It's already sketchy enough that I'm in your room at night. If I stay, it'll just make things worse."
"Why worry about what people think? We're just friends. Smart people won't buy into rumors," Sawyer argued.
Caroline gave his shoulder a light pat. "Sometimes rumors hurt more than knives. Goodnight, don't be a kid."
Sawyer grumbled, "Cut it out! I'm not a kid!"
Caroline waved goodbye, closed the door, and left.
At the hotel's main entrance, a Rolls-Royce had been parked for a while. Usually, guest cars are directed to the parking lot by security to keep the entrance clear, but this car was an exception. It was Nathan's ride.
Nathan's license plate was unique, with all characters except the first being 4. This rare plate, combined with a model of which only three exist worldwide, made it known to all as Nathan's signature.
The black Rolls-Royce stood there like a boss, and everyone gave it a wide berth. No one dared to move it, even if it was blocking the way.
Nathan sat inside, watching every person leaving the hotel. With only thirteen minutes left until midnight, if Caroline didn't leave Sawyer's room by then, he would end her career in the entertainment industry, secretly take Ryan and Sophie away, and make her disappear from Silver Lake City forever.
The whole plan would be carried out in secrecy, even Nick and Sawyer would be kept in the dark, as this was a disgrace to the Kennedy Family.
She was reckless, willing to do anything for a role. Though she had kids with Nick, she was trying to seduce Sawyer, who was Nick's nephew!
If this tangled mess went public, it would trash the family's reputation.
Nathan would never let her drag the Kennedy Family's name through the mud, nor would he let her mess up Sawyer and Nick's lives.
She wasn't fit to be Ryan and Sophie's mom. Ryan and Sophie needed to be kept away from her to avoid being tainted by her!
Just as Nathan was stewing in his intense emotions, Caroline, looking casual and fresh-faced, stepped out of the hotel.
Through the car window, Nathan watched Caroline.
She wasn't one to notice luxury cars. With her laid-back personality, she naturally wouldn't have noticed the car model.
She didn't feel the cold, piercing gaze following her. She walked to the parking lot, started her car, and quietly drove off.
Nathan's car tailed her, but she had no clue. He didn't really get why he was following her, but he didn't need a reason.
Caroline wasn't the best driver and didn't hit the road often, so she was going pretty slow.
The driver of the Rolls-Royce had to crawl along behind her inconspicuous Honda, drawing curious looks from other drivers. They were probably thinking, 'Seriously? A car like that going this slow? An electric scooter would be more fun.'
Nathan followed Caroline all the way to her neighborhood entrance. The fancy Rolls-Royce didn't go any further.
Nathan paused at the entrance, then told the driver to take him back to the office.
The next morning, the first employee to arrive at the office was surprised to see the lights in the CEO's office already on. They wondered if Nathan had woken up early or pulled an all-nighter.
The day was jam-packed as usual, and it wasn't until six in the evening that Nathan finally got a break.
Just then, Nick rushed in, looking troubled, wanting to talk to Nathan.
Nathan had a lot to say about Caroline but found it hard to get the words out.
"Nathan, let's grab a meal together. It's been a while," Nick suggested warmly.
"No, I've still got some things to handle," Nathan replied flatly.
"Nathan, I know you're busy, but you still need to eat, right? Living just for work is so dull," Nick tried to persuade him.
Nathan stayed silent. Despite the fact that they were twins, their personalities were worlds apart.
Nick also worked at the company and did well, but he couldn't handle Nathan's level of responsibility.
With great power came great responsibility, and the pressure that followed.
Nick couldn't understand, and Nathan didn't feel the need to explain.
Just then, a secretary came in with two cups of steaming coffee.
"Forget the meal, just say what you need to," Nathan said, picking up the coffee.
"Nathan, I saw my kids. They're so adorable!" Nick trilled, alight with excitement.
Nathan nodded slightly, his thoughts a mess.
"Nathan, thank you so much for helping me find them. I'm so lucky to have a brother like you," Nick said warmly.
A faint smile appeared on Nathan's lips.
Nick went on, "I feel like the happiest guy in the world. I've got a beautiful wife, adorable daughter, handsome son, and of course, a capable and handsome brother like you. My life is perfect!"
Looking at Nick's happy face, Nathan felt a pang in his heart.
He thought about Caroline being in Sawyer's room. If Nick found out Caroline was cheating on him, and with his own nephew, how would he handle it?
Thinking about this, Nathan felt even angrier towards Caroline.
"Nathan, can you understand my happiness? Maybe you can't," Nick said.
