Chapter 14
Caroline wrapped up her performance, but the room stayed dead quiet, everyone still lost in her act.
"Not bad!" Jack broke the silence with a clap.
Nathan, who had been watching intently, seemed to give his nod of approval.
William caught on and grinned. He thought, 'This chick's got talent, and if Mr. Kennedy's assistant is cool with her, then Mr. Kennedy must be into her too.'
He glanced at Nathan, waiting for the final call.
Just then, the assistant director sidled up to Nathan and whispered, "Mr. Kennedy, Demi said if you give her this role, you can pick the place tonight, and she'll do whatever you want."
Nathan's newfound respect for Caroline went up in smoke. He started wondering if all their past interactions were just part of her game.
Nathan's eyes narrowed dangerously. He thought, 'Using her body to get ahead, huh? She thinks she's all that. No way she's getting this role.'
Nathan stood up, face like ice, and walked out without a word.
Everyone was floored.
"Mr. Kennedy, this actress..." Jack started, but shut up quick when Nathan shot him a cold look. He turned to William and said, "This actress won't do."
The room buzzed with shock. They thought, 'She nailed it, and it's still not enough? Mr. Kennedy's standards are insane. What kind of performance would be good enough?'
Only Roxanne stood there smirking, thinking, 'Caroline, no matter how good you are, I can still make sure you don't get the part.'
Caroline was stunned. Just moments ago, everyone was into her performance, and she thought she had it in the bag.
She had no clue why Nathan shot her down. She rushed over, blocking his way.
Everyone was shocked, thinking, 'She's got guts, standing up to Mr. Kennedy!'
"What's wrong with me? Why are you denying me?" Caroline demanded, looking Nathan straight in the eye. Up close, he looked even more like Ryan. She had to keep reminding herself he wasn't Ryan, since Ryan wasn't this old.
Nathan raised an eyebrow, looking at Caroline. Up close, her face was flawless. Sure, she was pretty, but that didn't mean she could just throw herself at him.
Nathan didn't say a word, just gave Jack a look.
Jack got the message. "Mr. Kennedy said no, so it's a no. Don't waste his time."
"Why? Was my performance bad? If there's something wrong, tell me so I can fix it. But denying me without a reason? I won't accept that!" Caroline clenched her fists, staring Nathan down.
"How dare you? Who do you think you are to talk to Mr. Kennedy like that? Apologize now!" William was freaking out.
Nathan getting questioned at an audition? If he got mad, William would be in trouble too. He had to shut Caroline up fast.
"What's wrong with my performance? Tell me!" Caroline didn't back down. She was small, but she stood tall, like she had a ton of strength. "Can't say, can you? Because you don't get acting or art. You're not a pro. Sure, you have money, but you can't just do whatever you want and deny people on a whim, right?"
The room went silent again. No one had ever dared to talk to Nathan like that.
They thought, 'She's got no idea what she's doing. She's done for. She won't last in this industry!'
