Chapter 37
Hearing someone fiddling with the lock outside, Ryan and Sophie freaked out inside the house.
"He's messing with the door! Ryan, what do we do?" Sophie asked, her voice shaking.
"We gotta call the cops," Ryan said, punching in the emergency number.
"The number you have dialed is not in service," the automated voice droned.
Ryan dialed a foreign emergency number, and Caroline hadn't had the chance to tell him the emergency number for Aurora City.
"How'd it go?" Sophie asked, her voice urgent.
"I can't get through. What now?" Ryan said, his face scrunched up in worry.
The sound of the lock being picked kept going. If it wasn't for the deadbolt, the door would've been open by now.
"What now?" Sophie was on the edge of tears.
They were just kids, and this kind of stress was way too much for them.
"I'll try again. Don't be scared, I'll protect you," Ryan said softly, trying to comfort Sophie, even though he was pale with fear himself.
He dialed the number again, but still no luck.
Ryan realized he had the wrong number.
"Isn't this the right number?" Ryan asked Sophie.
Sophie shook her head. "I don't know."
"I'll check online," Ryan said, rushing to the study.
Sophie, too scared to be alone, quickly followed Ryan and shut the door behind her.
Ryan looked it up and found out the local emergency number was different.
Just as he was about to head to the living room to call the cops, the door was already being forced open.
Ryan quickly shoved Sophie under the desk to hide.
At that moment, the study door was kicked open, and Luke stood there.
He'd never seen such a beautiful kid before. The kid's face looked familiar, but he couldn't place it right away. The kid looked like Nathan.
Nathan was the guy Luke hated most because he thought Nathan had stolen Roxanne from him.
Luke had sworn countless times in front of Nathan's photo that he'd kill him someday.
He rarely got close to Nathan, and Roxanne wouldn't let him hurt Nathan.
Now, seeing the kid's face, Luke was momentarily stunned.
Why did this face look so familiar? Where had he seen it before?
"Who are you? What do you want?" Ryan tried to stay calm but was actually shaking.
"Are you home alone?" Luke looked at the delicate kid and felt his heart soften, making him hesitate.
He wasn't entirely evil; he was just willing to do anything for Roxanne because he loved her so much.
"Sarah went out to buy groceries," Ryan said calmly.
Sophie was trembling under the desk.
"Sarah?" Luke remembered that when he followed Caroline yesterday, there was a short-haired girl with her, and they had entered this house together.
"Please, have a seat. Sarah will be back soon. I'll get you some water," Ryan said, walking towards Luke, trying to lead him to the living room. This way, no matter what happened, Sophie hiding under the desk would be safe.
Luke was surprised by the kid's composure and started to wonder if the short-haired girl really had gone out to buy groceries and would be back soon.
If that was the case, he needed to act quickly and leave.
"Are you Caroline's kid?" Luke asked.
"Yes, are you a friend of my mom's?" Ryan answered.
Ryan was on the verge of breaking down from fear, but he had to stay calm to protect Sophie. With each word, he bit his lip slightly, using the mild pain to keep his fear in check.
Faced with the kid's question, Luke didn't know how to respond.
He definitely wasn't Caroline's friend; he was there to kill her kid.
But confronted with such a polite kid, he hesitated.
