Chapter 196

Nathan watched Caroline's expression change from surprise to panic, and even a hint of fear.

What was she thinking? What was she planning?

"We don't really have any deep hatred between us. Technically, you're still my children's uncle, so we're kind of family," Caroline tried to steady her emotions and persuade Nathan.

Nathan didn't speak; he didn't understand Caroline's intention with these words.

"So, will you show me some mercy?" Caroline tentatively asked.

"Show mercy?" Nathan was even more confused.

Then he pointed to the wine glass. "Drink."

"I won't drink!" Caroline firmly refused.

She thought, 'Do you think I'm stupid? There's definitely something wrong with the wine, and you still want me to drink it?'

Nathan picked up his own glass and drank it all in one go.

Caroline watched him drink it, pondering, 'Could it really be poison-free? Otherwise, how could he dare to drink it?'

Suddenly, she had a flash of insight and understood. He wanted to get her drunk and then lure her into telling the truth!

It must be that! What a cunning plan this cold-hearted man has!

"You drink," Caroline proactively poured Nathan another glass of wine.

Nathan was stunned for a moment but still drank it.

Caroline continued to pour wine, and Nathan continued to drink.

Soon, Nathan had drunk more than half a bottle of sake, and Caroline became the dedicated wine pourer, while Nathan was responsible for drinking.

This wine was quite strong, and Nathan gradually became tipsy.

His face flushed from the alcohol, his whole demeanor softened a bit, and he didn't seem so distant anymore.

He also looked better.

Caroline pondered, getting him drunk wouldn't be easy. He was so smart, so he would soon catch on.

What should she do?

Actually, Nathan had already guessed Caroline's intention, but he didn't care.

Today's button incident had left him unsettled, and he just wanted to have a drink to relax.

"You can't get me drunk. I rarely drink, just don't see the need for social drinking," Nathan said directly.

Caroline awkwardly smiled. "I wasn't really trying to get you drunk. After all, there's no benefit in it for me."

"What did you say?" Nathan asked, puzzled.

Caroline realized she had misspoken and quickly shut her mouth.

It seemed her alcohol tolerance was really low; she had only drunk this much and was already starting to talk nonsense.

She should avoid drinking with Nathan in the future; they were not on the same level.

"I mean, you getting drunk doesn't benefit me. I'd have to take care of you, and I can't carry you. It's already late; let's go back?" Caroline prepared to retreat.

Nathan looked at his watch. "Let's sit a bit longer. You haven't answered my question about the button."

"What's there to say about the button? It's your button. I admit it's very delicate and beautiful, okay?" Caroline began to evade the issue.

"You gave me this button." Nathan picked up the button and looked at it closely.

Caroline felt a wave of panic, thinking, 'Oh my God, what had I done? I actually took out this button to show Nathan? Why did I do that?'

"No way, you must be mistaken," Caroline tried to deny it.

"I can't be mistaken. You were drunk last night, but I wasn't."

"Really? Was I really that drunk?" Caroline pretended to respond lightly.

"You were so drunk that you stopped on the highway to throw up. When we got back to Aurora City, you were still in a daze. Even though you were dazed, you kept clamoring for pasta and more wine, and finally passed out on the table."

Caroline covered her face with her hands, utterly embarrassed.

"Impossible! I'm not that kind of person." Caroline forced herself to stay calm.

"I have video evidence; I recorded it," Nathan said coldly.

"What? You recorded a video of me drunk? How boring are you?" Caroline shouted.

Actually, Nathan didn't record any video; he wasn't that bored.

"Then you took out the button and said..." Nathan hesitated a bit; this was a big deal, and saying it out loud was stressful.

"Said what?" Caroline nervously stared with her beautiful eyes.

"You said the button's owner is the father of your kids." Nathan finished speaking and stared intently at Caroline.

Caroline was completely stunned.

Why did she have to say such things when she was drunk? Couldn't she have said something else? This was utterly ridiculous!

Drinking really caused trouble!

"How do you explain this?" Nathan stared at Caroline, as if trying to see through her.

Caroline panicked, not daring to meet Nathan's gaze. She quickly averted her eyes, picked up the wine glass, and drank it in one gulp, trying to hide her panic.

She drank too quickly and choked, coughing violently.

Nathan continued to stare at Caroline, his gaze never wavering.

Caroline's face turned red from coughing, and it took a long time for her to stop.

At first, she choked on the wine, but later she coughed on purpose.

Coughing was a good way to hide her panic.

When the coughing stopped, Caroline had almost calmed down.

"How do you explain this?" Nathan asked again.

"I was drunk, so it was just drunken talk. Can you take it seriously?" Caroline forced a smile.

"No, people speak the truth when they're drunk. What you said wasn't nonsense," Nathan said coldly.

"If you put it that way, then I have nothing to say," Caroline continued to deny.

"What is the real truth?" Nathan pressed.

"What truth?"

"Why have you kept that button for so long? It must mean a lot to you, otherwise, you wouldn't have done that," Nathan questioned.

Caroline remained silent.

Nathan was extremely smart; it was too difficult to deceive him.

But even Caroline herself couldn't figure out the whole situation.

Nathan and Nick looked the same, and the Kennedy family's DNA report had already proven the kids were Nick's. How could a button overturn a scientific report?

She really couldn't explain it.

Moreover, if this wasn't handled well, it could cause a new crisis. Mistaking the kids' father would have been so shameful if word had gotten out. So Caroline had always avoided this topic.

But today, Nathan brought it up again, causing her great distress.

"Speak, what is going on?" Nathan pressed step by step.

"I was just drunk talking; there's no story behind it. Let it go," Caroline said anxiously.

"But I have the right to know the truth!" Nathan was also anxious.

He had been entangled with her all night, and she refused to say anything. Nathan was getting impatient!

"The truth is I was drunk and talking nonsense." Caroline stood up, ready to grab her bag and leave. She couldn't continue this conversation.

Nathan grabbed her. "Explain before you go. This is also being responsible for yourself!"

"I really don't know! Didn't you already do a test? The kids are Nick's. Don't you believe in scientific tests?" Caroline retorted.

"But the blood sample sent for testing was mine!"

Caroline was stunned.

What did this mean? The blood sample sent for testing was his, so the paternity test result meant he was the kids' biological father?

"Why did you use your blood for the comparison?"

"At that time, Nick was in Stellaria. Since he and I are identical twins and share the same DNA, they used my blood instead."
