Chapter 46

"It's too childish," Ryan said, cutting straight to the point.

Nathan felt like he was being mocked. Ryan just called him "childish"!

Taking a deep breath to calm down, Nathan stood up and handed the carefully made pastries to Sophie, who lit up with joy. "I love sweets!" she exclaimed.

Nathan then picked up the giant stuffed animal, debating whether to give it to Ryan. He was afraid of getting rejected again. And sure enough, Ryan's look said it all—no thanks.

"Ryan wouldn't play with that; he'd call you childish," Sophie chimed in, making Nathan even more anxious.

Quickly putting the stuffed animal down, Nathan defended himself, "I'm not usually childish."

If people knew Nathan had to defend himself against being called childish by two kids, they'd be shocked.

Nathan reflected on himself. He'd always been his own person, never caring about what others thought. But today, he was so worried about what Ryan and Sophie thought, and it was confusing.

Suddenly, an idea hit him, and he turned to Sophie. "Can I have two strands of your hair?"

Sophie looked puzzled. "Why do you need my hair?"

Nathan was momentarily at a loss for words.

"He wants to test the DNA," Ryan said, sounding like he knew everything.

Nathan was so surprised he almost lost his cool. He didn't expect Ryan to guess his reason for asking for hair. Was there anything this kid didn't know?

Deciding to come clean, Nathan explained, "I'm collecting your hair to help find your dad."

"Take mine," Ryan said, pulling out a few strands and handing them to Nathan.

Nathan carefully wrapped the hair in a tissue.

"Are you our dad?" Sophie asked innocently.

Nathan was taken aback but quickly denied it. "No."

He had never been in a relationship with any girl, so it was impossible for him to have children.

"Then why do we look so much alike?" Sophie pressed, still confused.

Nathan had no answer. It was a mystery to him too.

The only explanation was that Nick looked a lot like Nathan, and Nick might be Ryan and Sophie's dad, which would explain why they resembled Nathan.

"There will be an answer," Nathan promised.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. "Can I come in?" Harper asked.

"Yes," Sophie answered quickly.

Harper walked in, curious about the striking resemblance among the three and wondering what they had been talking about.

Nathan switched back to his usual serious self. "I have to go."

He was really busy. Even though it was after work hours, he still had an important meeting to attend.

"Aren't you going to meet the person who brought them?" Harper suggested.

"No need," Nathan replied coldly, standing up and heading for the door.

"Are you serious?" Harper asked, puzzled, following closely behind.

"How did your conversation go?" Harper asked.

"Pretty well," Nathan said.

"Did you find out who their mom is?" Harper was very concerned.

Nathan shook his head. "No."

Harper was even more confused. "No? Then what did you talk about for so long? Wasn't your goal to find out who their mother is?"

"It's not important," Nathan said lightly.

Harper thought about it and realized it made sense. Nathan was dealing with his own issues, so it wasn't important.

"So, what did you talk about?" Harper was still curious.

"We just chatted," Nathan replied briefly.

"About what?" Harper pressed.

Nathan stayed silent. He wasn't great with words, and Harper's questions felt trivial. So, Nathan chose to stay quiet.

Once Nathan decided to stay quiet, no one could make him speak.

Harper was a bit annoyed. "I let you meet the kids, and you won't even tell me what you talked about?"

Nathan realized this was inappropriate since Harper was one of his few friends.

He stopped and said, "We arranged to have a meal together."

"A meal?" Harper was even more surprised. "You and Ryan and Sophie?"

"Yes," Nathan nodded seriously.

"How interesting! You arranged a meal with Ryan and Sophie. Aren't you the hardest person to invite in Aurora City?"

"Exactly," Nathan admitted.

If Nathan attended a meal, it had to be significant; otherwise, he wouldn't show up easily.

"But now you have a meal planned with Ryan and Sophie," Harper continued.

"Yes," Nathan confirmed again.

"Can I join? After all, we haven't had a meal together in a long time," Harper said, feeling a bit sad.

"No," Nathan said.

"Nathan, how can you refuse?" Harper was annoyed.

Nathan ignored Harper's dissatisfaction and walked away.

Sarah, who had just returned from the market, happened to see Nathan and was so surprised that her mouth dropped open. She confirmed repeatedly that it was indeed the high-and-mighty Nathan.

Nathan's strong presence made Sarah a bit intimidated. She stepped aside, bowed slightly, and greeted, "Hello, Mr. Kennedy."

Nathan looked up and recognized her as Caroline's agent. Caroline had been very disrespectful to him on set. He had no good feelings towards Caroline, and naturally, he wasn't interested in talking to her agent either.

But out of courtesy, he nodded slightly and then walked past Sarah with a stern face.

Sarah had intended to introduce herself and discuss cooperation, but looking at Nathan's handsome yet cold face, she couldn't say a word.

She had planned to ask Harper about Nathan's purpose for being there, but she reconsidered, thinking they weren't that familiar yet, and asking directly might seem too forward. After getting Harper's signal to leave, she took Ryan and Sophie out of the clinic.

As the car started, Sarah noticed that Sophie had a box of exquisite pastries in her hand, and Ryan was holding a giant stuffed animal. Although Ryan wasn't interested in such childish gifts, he was willing to be a porter for Sophie's happiness.

"Did Harper give you these? Getting gifts from a psychological consultation, Harper is really thoughtful," Sarah asked.

"Nathan gave them to us," Sophie responded honestly.

Sarah, who was about to drive out of the parking lot, suddenly braked and turned to look at Sophie in the back seat, who was buckled up. "What did you just say?"

"We met Nathan, the CEO Nathan," Sophie shared excitedly, quickly stuffing another piece of pastry into her mouth. Ryan nodded silently beside her.

"And then?" Sarah was overjoyed.
