Chapter 58
Caroline was too embarrassed to admit it was because of the unbearable itching.
"You don't look so hot. Come on, I'll take you to the hospital," Sawyer said, not caring about appearances as he grabbed Caroline's hand.
Everyone was stunned.
"Let go, the director hasn't approved it yet," Caroline tried to pull away from Sawyer.
"William, why not approve the leave?" Sawyer demanded.
William hesitated, "Well, the crew has a schedule to keep."
"Actors aren't robots. If they're sick, they need treatment," Sawyer snapped back.
"Sway, don't say that. This woman is very cunning; she might just be trying to slack off," Roxanne chimed in.
"Who are you? Are we close enough for you to call me that?" Sawyer shot back at Roxanne.
Roxanne was left speechless.
Of course, Sawyer knew who Roxanne was. Even though he'd been out of the industry for half a year, he knew Roxanne was a well-known actress.
More importantly, Roxanne was rumored to be Nathan's girlfriend.
But Roxanne rarely got into Nathan's inner circle, so she didn't know that Sawyer was actually Nathan's nephew.
Roxanne had even thought about creating some rumors with Sawyer to gain attention, but she didn't expect Sawyer to not fall for it.
"Let's go. I'll take you to the hospital. We won't shoot this scene. I'll take the heat," Sawyer said firmly.
"Sawyer, don't be rash," William tried to reason.
"I can't stand you heartless directors. You don't treat actors like humans. If an actor is sick, you still force them to act. If something serious happens, can you handle the fallout?" Sawyer challenged.
William had no response.
Sawyer was the male lead chosen by Nathan, and Roxanne was Nathan's girlfriend. With Sawyer and Roxanne at odds, William would be wrong no matter whom he sided with. So William just played it safe and let Sawyer and Roxanne argue.
Roxanne saw that Sawyer was about to take Caroline away and wanted to stop him but was afraid of completely angering Sawyer.
In the entertainment industry, popularity was power.
Although Sawyer was young, he was very popular. Roxanne definitely wanted to stay on good terms with such a superstar.
Even if Sawyer didn't respect Roxanne, she didn't dare to break with him.
But Roxanne was unwilling, so she gave Megan a look.
Megan got the hint but didn't move. She didn't dare to act. If even Roxanne didn't dare to act rashly, how could she?
Although Megan was being used by Roxanne, she was willing to be used because it was profitable.
In this situation, Megan knew that standing up would only cause trouble, so she naturally didn't move.
Roxanne saw that Megan didn't move and glared at her.
Megan pretended not to see.
So, under everyone's gaze, Sawyer affectionately held Caroline's hand and left the set.
Roxanne suddenly thought of something and took out her phone to secretly snap a picture of Sawyer holding Caroline's hand.
Caroline got into Sawyer's RV, feeling increasingly hot, itchy, and a bit painful.
The sensation was like countless bugs biting under her skin, with fine needles constantly pricking.
Even someone as tough as Caroline couldn't help but groan.
"Is it really bad? What's going on?" Sawyer asked, concerned.
"She has a terrible rash all over her body, densely packed and scary. It doesn't look like an allergy; it should be poisoning," Sarah explained.
"Poisoning? How could she be poisoned?" Sawyer was shocked.
"It's not clear yet, but Roxanne and Megan in the crew have always been hostile to Caroline. I can't say they have nothing to do with her poisoning," Sarah continued.
"Damn it, I need to get to the bottom of this. How can the crew be so careless? I have to tell my uncle," Sawyer fumed.
"Your uncle? Who's that?" Sarah asked, curious.
Sawyer remembered Nathan's instructions to keep their relationship under wraps. "My uncle's an experienced doctor. Maybe he can help figure this out," he improvised.
Sarah sighed, "He probably can't diagnose Caroline without seeing her. We should go to the hospital first."
"Alright, we'll head to the best dermatology hospital. I'll call and set it up so she gets treated as soon as we get there," Sawyer said, pulling out his phone to make arrangements.
Being a celebrity with a powerful family, Sawyer had plenty of connections in Aurora City. He knew people in all sorts of places.
When they arrived at the hospital, Caroline didn't have to deal with any red tape and went straight into the examination room.
After blood tests and various checks, they started her on intravenous treatment.
Thanks to the quick response, the toxic rash was brought under control. But the doctor said she still needed to stay in the hospital for observation.
Two hours later, Caroline felt a bit better. She got up and carefully examined the costume that Sarah had folded.
"Lie down, don't move. What are you doing?" Sarah asked.
"I need to see if there's something wrong with this costume. I have a feeling something's off," Caroline explained.
Sarah was skeptical. "That can't be. The crew prepared it, and I personally checked it. There was nothing wrong when you wore it."
"I'm just guessing, not sure," Caroline insisted.
Finally, she found two tiny black needles in the seam of the costume, extremely hard to notice.
"This is it. These needles must be poisonous," Caroline asserted.
"Oh my God, how could this happen? Who did it?" Sarah was shocked.
"It was either Roxanne or Megan, or Roxanne instructed Megan to do it," Caroline said.
"They've gone too far! This is outrageous. I'm calling the police!" Sarah snapped.
"Calling the police isn't a good idea," Caroline quickly stopped her. "This kind of issue can't be solved by calling the police. It's hard to collect evidence for small matters. Once the police get involved, it will only make everyone anxious. If the media catches wind of it, the situation will be blown out of proportion, which is bad for everyone. I don't want that."
Sarah nodded in agreement but was still upset. "So you're just going to let it go?"
"I've always been cautious, expecting this day to come, but I was still careless. I'll be more careful in the future. As for who did it, I know in my heart. There's no need for the police to get involved. What good would it do to call the police? Forget it, let's put this matter aside. I'll find a way to deal with it. Anyway, I got timely treatment, and I'm fine. Just take it as a lesson learned," Caroline said calmly, showing no signs of distress.
Caroline didn't care because her experiences over the years had taught her that hatred and jealousy were the most useless emotions. Caroline's mother, Daisy, died with resentment, and Caroline, pregnant, left for another place. Hatred once followed her like a shadow, plunging Caroline into despair and pain.
It wasn't until her child was born that Caroline realized that hatred only torments oneself. Since that was the case, why did she cling to it? Living a brilliant life, better than her enemies, was the true liberation.
Having gone through those nightmares, Caroline could be so open-minded and composed.
Just as Caroline was comforting the indignant Sarah, Sawyer walked in.
