Chapter 140
"I believe you." This time, Nathan answered sincerely.
"I'm not complaining to you about my hardships. I think it's nothing. Ryan and Sophie are still growing up healthy and happy," Caroline declared proudly.
"If they could integrate into the Kennedy Family, life would be better," Nathan said softly.
Caroline immediately became alert. "You're not planning to take my kids away, are you?"
"I don't mean that," Nathan quickly denied.
"Good, because if you even think about it, I won't be so nice," Caroline said, pretending to be fierce as she waved her fist.
"Then I'm willing to marry you. What's your answer?" Nathan asked directly.
"I've said it before, I don't agree," Caroline said firmly.
Nathan was filled with doubts. Hadn't she always longed to marry into the Kennedy Family for the sake of the children? Why was she refusing now?
Could it be true, as Nick said, that she didn't want to marry into the Kennedy Family?
"Why?" Nathan's curiosity was completely piqued.
"I've answered this question many times," Caroline said, a bit impatient.
"I came to talk to you today specifically about this matter." Nathan tried to mimic Nick's tone, though it was a bit stiff, he tried to make himself seem more casual and relaxed.
"Talk about what? Go ahead," Caroline adjusted to a comfortable sitting position.
"Our marriage."
"I didn't agree to it. I don't like you."
"But I can provide a better life for you and the kids. They can get a quality education, grow up in a better environment, and have a bright future."
"Am I married to you now?" Caroline retorted..
Nathan didn't understand but answered honestly, "No."
"Then aren't Ryan and Sophie excellent enough now?" Caroline pressed on.
Nathan was momentarily speechless. Ryan and Sophie were undeniably exceptional; to say otherwisewould be too harsh.
"They're already exceptional, but without a broader stage, they might gradually lose their brilliance," Nathan replied carefully.
"Most people are ordinary. I just hope they are healthy and happy. Whether they are ordinary or not, I don't care."
Nathan felt a bit frustrated. She seemed to have an incomprehensible stubbornness. Could it be that she was content with being ordinary and hoped her children would be the same?
What puzzled him even more was that she refused to marry into the Kennedy Family, completely contradicting his belief that she had gone to great lengths for this. Her refusal left him utterly baffled.
Perhaps, this was just her playing hard to get?
"So, what kind of person do you like?" Nathan changed the topic.
"That's such a boring question. Liking someone doesn't follow a fixed standard, like choosing a product with specific models and sizes. You only understand it when you fall in love. How would you know if you've never experienced it?"Caroline retorted.
Nathan was at a loss for words, finding her words unexpectedly reasonable.
She could say such profound things, which surprised Nathan.
"Then what kind of person do you dislike?" he asked again.
"People who are rude, disrespectful, and arrogant," Caroline answered.
Nathan muttered, "Isn't that describing me?"
"Do you have such people around you?"
"Isn't Nathan like that?" Caroline blurted out.
Nathan felt like he'd been punched in the gut. His heart burned with anger, but he stayed silent.
So, in her heart, he was an uncouth, disrespectful, and arrogant person?
When was he ever rude or arrogant?
"Are you upset because I mentioned Nathan?" Caroline glanced at Nathan.
Nathan forced a calm demeanor. "No."
"And does he know about you wanting to marry me?"
"He knows," Nathan said.
"He must be against it, right?" Caroline smiled meaningfully.
"How do you know?"
"Because he doesn't like me."
"Why doesn't he like you?"
"Not sure, maybe because I don't like him much either," Caroline said casually.
"Get out of the car," Nathan ordered coldly.
"What?"
"Get out of the car!"
Caroline thought, 'You two really are in cahoots. You get mad when I mention Nathan?'
Nathan realized he had overreacted. Her dislike for him hadn't been a secret, so why had he gotten angry?
"It's getting late, you should go back and rest," he deliberately adjusted his tone to sound as gentle as possible.
"Are you okay now? Does your stomach still hurt?"
"I'm fine." Nathan wanted to say thank you but ultimately swallowed the words.
"Alright, you go home. Don't come here again; this place isn't suitable for you. And stop thinking about marrying me—anyone you find would be better than me. I'm leaving." Caroline got out of the car decisively and slammed the door, making Nathan frown. He thought, 'Indeed, rude people even close doors rudely.'
"You really don't want to marry me?" Nathan still couldn't believe it.
"You're so nagging. I said I don't want to, and I mean it. I'm not interested in you," Caroline waved her hand and went upstairs without looking back.
Nathan sat alone in the car for a long time, making sure his stomach pain had completely subsided before driving away.
He had pretended to be Nick just to get closer to Caroline, hoping to uncover her true self.
However, the result was not as expected. He still couldn't see through her heart.
Nathan used to have a completely negative view of Caroline. She was always involved in scandals, willing to sell herself for roles, and even rumored to have indirectly caused her mother's death. But after getting closer, he realized she wasn't as bad as he had thought. Despite her rough and unrefined demeanor, he couldn't sense any darkness in her heart.
This left him confused. Had he misjudged her all along?
How could he have been so wrong?
Caroline went upstairs, and Sarah's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Where did you two go to be all lovey-dovey?"
"In the car," Caroline answered nonchalantly.
"In the car? Aren't you afraid of being seen? You two sure love a thrill!" Sarah pretended to be surprised.
"What's there to be afraid of? We're getting married anyway; it's all above board," Caroline said innocently. Then she chuckled and added, "Sarah, you really let your imagination run wild. Actually, I just went with him to buy some medicine, and then we chatted a bit in the car, that's all."
"Do you think Mr. Nick Kennedy was acting a bit strange tonight?" Sarah lowered her voice, looking particularly mysterious.
"Maybe the barbecue was too spicy and it threw him off," Caroline said with a laugh.
"Yeah, he is usually so humorous. Today, he seemed so steady when he walked in, it wasn't like him at all."
Caroline's heart skipped a beat. Could it be? Then she dismissed the thought, thinking she was overthinking.
"People have their ups and downs; it's normal," Caroline said lightly.
"True, but he did seem more mature tonight," Sarah's words made Caroline doubt again. She took out her phone and dialed Nick's number.
The first number was off, so she dialed the second number.
The phone rang a few times before it was finally answered, "Hello?"
"Where are you now?" Caroline asked.
"On the road, I just left Sarah's neighborhood, didn't I?" the voice on the other end replied.
Caroline felt relieved. "Does your stomach still hurt?"
"Your medicine works wonders; it doesn't hurt anymore," Nick replied.
"That's good; get some rest early," Caroline hung up the phone.
Unexpectedly, Nick called back immediately, "One more thing, I've found a new school for Ryan and Sophie. I'll take them to school tomorrow morning."
Before Caroline could respond, Nick had already hung up, his tone leaving no room for doubt. Since when did Nick learn to be so assertive? What was he hiding behind this?
