Chapter 25

Nathan squinted at Caroline, his jaw tightening.

Jack, sensing the tension, jumped in, "Mr. Smith, what the hell is going on here?"

Roxanne wasn't about to let William spill the beans; she wanted Nathan to think she was the victim.

"Mr. Smith, isn't it true that Demi messed with the script without permission? She added scenes that weren't there and even slapped me, making my face swell. In this industry, everyone respects me because of Mr. Kennedy, but Demi went out of her way to make things hard for me. If word gets out, everyone I work with in the future will think they can mess with me.

"Getting hit is no big deal for an actress, but Mr. Kennedy's dignity is on the line, right? Mr. Smith, if you don't stand up for me today, I can't keep working on this film." Roxanne's acting was usually trash, but she nailed it this time.

William was feeling the heat. He knew the real story, but with Roxanne using Nathan to pressure him, he had to cave.

William stormed over to Caroline, yelling, "What's your problem? Mr. Kennedy gave you the second female lead, and you don't even appreciate it. How dare you cause trouble on set? You need to apologize to Ms. Campbell right now and keep apologizing until she forgives you. Otherwise, we'll terminate your contract and recast the role!"

William was so mad, he spit a little on Caroline's face. She turned her head to dodge it, staying cool.

Nathan was here, Roxanne was playing the victim, and William was feeling the pressure—everything was going according to plan.

If Nathan had watched the two previous takes, he'd see Caroline wasn't the troublemaker. But Caroline knew he wouldn't bother.

Nathan didn't have time for petty stuff. What mattered now was that his so-called girlfriend got slapped, and it was public. No matter the reason, it was wrong. It hurt his pride, and that was the biggest mistake.

A mistake that needed fixing, no excuses. Nathan wouldn't listen. So Caroline had to apologize. If she didn't, she'd lose the role.

Opportunities were rare, and she had kids to support. She needed the money to give them a good education and a healthy upbringing in a single-parent family.

Caroline decided to own up. "I'm sorry, Ms. Campbell. I was wrong."

Roxanne let out a satisfied breath; Caroline had finally given in.

"What did you say? I didn't hear you." Roxanne cupped her ear, smug.

Caroline repeated, "I said, I was wrong!"

"Just saying sorry? If everyone could just brush off their mistakes with a simple apology, wouldn't the set be chaos?"

"So what do you want?"

"Slap yourself until your face swells. Only pain will make you remember," Roxanne said, viciously.

Caroline furrowed her brows, thinking, then suddenly started laughing.

Roxanne snapped, "What are you laughing at? You still have the nerve to laugh?"

"Are you trying to bully me with power? You're forcing me to slap myself, hiding behind Mr. Kennedy. He's using his power to make an ordinary actress slap herself. That's really something. They say to see how strong a man is, you have to look at his opponents. Mr. Kennedy is treating an unknown actress like me as an opponent. Doesn't that seem beneath him?" Caroline walked up to Nathan and stared coldly at his face.
