Chapter 21
The next morning, Caroline woke up feeling like she got hit by a truck. She stumbled into the kitchen to find Ryan and Sophie already up and making breakfast.
The breakfast was a bit of a mess: two slices of lukewarm bread and a couple of slightly charred fried eggs.
"Good luck at work, Mommy. You're the best. We made this for you," Sophie said, pulling out a chair for Caroline.
Caroline tried to keep it together, her eyes getting all misty.
"You guys got up early? Aren't you tired?" Caroline asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ryan and Sophie shook their heads, grinning. "Nope."
"You two are still kids. You need your sleep to grow. Don't get up so early next time. I can handle breakfast," Caroline said, tears threatening to spill.
"Mommy works hard and should sleep more," Sophie insisted.
Ryan nodded in agreement.
After breakfast, Caroline headed to the set.
By the time she got there, the lead actress Roxanne and the third lead Megan Jones were already on set.
Roxanne, usually the queen of being fashionably late, was early today for a reason.
In the dressing room, Roxanne shooed everyone out, leaving just her and Megan.
"Ms. Campbell, you got something to say?" Megan asked, looking nervous.
Megan was a singer who got famous from a talent show. Her singing was so-so, but she was known for her assets. Her skimpy outfits and a few nude scenes had gotten her some attention, but she was still nowhere near Roxanne's level.
"Megan, I wanted you to have the second lead in this film, but then Demi swooped in and took it," Roxanne said, eyeing Megan.
Megan's face twisted with resentment.
"Her acting sucks compared to yours, and she doesn't have your figure. The second lead should've been yours. I believe in you," Roxanne said, watching Megan's reaction.
"Ms. Campbell, the second lead's already taken. I'm stuck with the third lead," Megan said, frustration and anger in her voice.
"You're just gonna take that? I can't stand it," Roxanne said coldly.
"But what can I do? William's the boss."
"Megan, do you trust me?" Roxanne asked, locking eyes with her.
"Of course, I trust you. You're my idol."
"Good. If you follow my lead, you can get that second lead role back."
Megan's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Absolutely."
Roxanne looked around to make sure they were alone, then pulled a bottle of foundation from her bag.
"That bitch Demi relies on her looks and usually skips makeup at home. She'll need to do her makeup from scratch later. We'll do ours first, then swap her foundation. Once she uses this, her face will blow up like a balloon. Today’s the first day of shooting. If the second lead turns ugly, how can the film go on? Then I'll suggest replacing her, and you can step in," Roxanne said, her voice dripping with malice.
"What's in the foundation?" Megan asked, feeling a bit guilty.
"Don't worry about that. The question is, do you have the guts to do it? If not, just play the third lead and let Demi keep overshadowing you."
"Okay. I'll do it!" Megan said, her voice full of resolve.
