Chapter 121

"What? When did I ever harm him? I just owe him some money I haven't paid back yet. He's so rich, a few hundred thousand dollars is nothing to him. Besides, it's not like I won't ever pay him back; I'm just temporarily short on funds!" Caroline's response left Nathan stunned.

They were clearly talking about a life-and-death matter, and she was bringing up money?

Caroline also sensed something was off; their thoughts were obviously not on the same wavelength.

No surprise there, they had never been on the same page!

"What are you trying to say?" Caroline decided to get to the bottom of it.

"Sawyer's poison was almost cured, but his condition suddenly worsened because someone applied Silvermoon Herb to him again, intensifying the poison. He's still not out of danger!"

"I know, Ryan told me," she replied, followed by an awkward silence.

"So you suspect I harmed him?" Caroline suddenly realized.

"Who else could it be?" Nathan's voice was as cold as ice.

"Why do you suspect me? Just because you don't like me? You think it's me just because you say so? I don't like you either, and I could suspect you!" Caroline retorted.

"He's my nephew; why would I harm him?"

"He's my good friend; I have even less reason to harm him!" Nathan was furious but helpless against Caroline. His heart burned with anger, but he couldn't hit a woman. Finally, he said, "Get lost!"

Caroline was stunned. In this desolate place, where was she supposed to go?

But she didn't dare talk back because she sensed danger.

People like Nathan should never be completely angered.

If he really threw her into the river, wouldn't she die unjustly?

Besides, if it weren't for him, she, Ryan, and Sophie would have been kidnapped long ago. In that regard, she did owe him gratitude.

His meticulous care for the children even made her, their mother, feel ashamed.

"It really wasn't me; I have no reason to do that." Caroline softened her tone.

Nathan, still fuming, said nothing.

"I've been with Ryan and Sophie the whole time; they can testify." Caroline added.

Nathan remained silent.

"I can swear it wasn't me who harmed Sawyer!" Caroline suggested.

Oaths meant nothing to Nathan, but he believed Ryan and Sophie could testify.

Even if Caroline was despicable, she wouldn't do something evil in front of the kids.

And Ryan and Sophie would never let Caroline do such a thing.

Especially Ryan, who was determined to save Sawyer; how could he let Caroline harm him?

"If it wasn't you, then who was it?" Nathan finally spoke, and Caroline felt relieved.

If he was willing to talk, it meant there was room for communication.

"Roxanne," Caroline declared with conviction.

"On what grounds?" Nathan questioned.

"I can't say for sure, but she has the strongest motive. Maybe Sawyer knows something incriminating about her, and she doesn't want him to regain consciousness."

Nathan didn't agree with Caroline's speculation. Roxanne had come with Sawyer; why would she harm him?

"Do you have any evidence?"

Caroline's recently calmed emotions flared up again at this question. She thought, 'I need evidence to suspect Roxanne, but you don't need any to suspect me?'

"You don't have evidence to suspect me either. I know Roxanne, so I'm guessing it's her. Believe it or not, it's up to you; I'm not forcing you to believe me."

Nathan remained silent.

Meanwhile, Ryan and Sophie were discussing the matter inside the tent.

"It must be that annoying Roxanne!" Sophie was certain.

Ryan signaled Sophie to lower her voice to avoid being overheard.

"But she came with Sawyer; they're friends. Why would she do that?" Ryan was puzzled.

Sophie couldn't answer; she just knew she didn't like Roxanne and always thought Roxanne was behind any bad thing.

"If it is her, we need to be careful." Ryan warned.

"Will she harm us?"

"She might." Ryan nodded gravely.

"Then let's tell Nathan!"

"We can't say anything; he has his own plans." Ryan cautioned.

Sophie was frustrated. Sophie was frustrated. Everything was off-limits—what was she supposed to do?

"Let's go ask her." Sophie had a sudden idea.

"She won't admit it; we need to find evidence." Ryan pondered.

"Ryan, you're the smartest. I'll leave this to you." Sophie said confidently.

"You have to help me too."

Ryan thought for a moment, then shook his head. "It's too difficult."

Sophie didn't understand why Ryan was suddenly doubting himself.

At that moment, Roxanne walked in, smiling broadly as she saw Nathan and Caroline leaving. "Kids, still awake?" she probed.

"Go away! I don't like you." Sophie was always straightforward.

"Sweetie, do you have a misunderstanding about me? I really like kids, and I'm a superstar." Roxanne tried to explain.

Ryan and Sophie exchanged glances, thinking how shameless she was.
