Chapter 18

Sarah unlocked the door, and Sophie, who was binge-watching anime on the couch, perked up and dashed over.

"Mom, you good? Did you nail the audition?" Sophie asked, eyes wide.

Caroline scooped Sophie up. "Yep, I'm all good, and I nailed it."

"Does that mean we get to feast tonight?" Sophie asked, practically drooling.

Caroline booped her nose. "All you ever think about is food."

Ryan, hearing the commotion from his study, strolled out but didn't rush. He just stood there, cool as a cucumber, watching Caroline.

Caroline walked over and hugged them both. "Ryan, how'd you figure out where I was locked up?"

"Piece of cake," Ryan said, no big deal, just stating a fact.

Caroline's mind drifted to Nathan at the audition. He was the silent type too. She'd argued with him forever, and he barely said a word.

Looking at Ryan, with that same cool indifference and those tight lips, he was like a mini Nathan.

It freaked her out. Caroline shook off the thought.

"Mom, you okay? You zoned out," Sophie said, clinging to Caroline's neck.

"Nothing, sweetie. I passed the audition, so we're celebrating with a big meal. Sarah's buying."

"Yay!" Sophie cheered.

"Wait, you passed, why am I paying?" Sarah pouted.

"Because you're loaded," Caroline said, grinning.

"You'll be rolling in it soon, just admit..." Sarah started, but Caroline shot her a look, and she clammed up.

They'd agreed not to let Ryan and Sophie know about the look-alike.

Kids' lives should be simple, free from unnecessary worries.

"Mom, you and Sarah are hiding something," Sophie said, suspicious.

"Nope, sweetheart. What do you wanna eat? My treat," Sarah said, taking Sophie from Caroline.

"Ice cream, chocolate, cake..." Sophie rattled off a list, and Sarah summed it up: she wanted everything sweet.

"Alright, you got it."

Just then, Sarah's phone buzzed. She picked it up, ducked into a room, and shut the door. "Hey, Simon."

The director, Simon Smith, said, "Sarah, I've seen the photos of those twins you showed me; they are adorable! I've got a kids' computer learning ad. Bring them in for a tryout, and if it clicks, we'll sign right away. Since we're tight, the pay's negotiable. These kids are gold, and we could do a lot together!"

Sarah almost jumped for joy. She was about to hit the jackpot.

Caroline wasn't famous yet, but Ryan and Sophie were about to be stars. Child star pay was through the roof, way more than most adults.

Sarah calmed down and strolled out, acting casual. "Caroline, if you're beat, take a break. I'll take the kids shopping for some nice clothes."

"They can wear anything; no need to splurge," Caroline said.

"They need it. They're so cute, they deserve some brand-name stuff. You rest up. I'll take the kids out, and we'll meet up for dinner."
