Chapter 17
Caroline and Sarah bailed from the hotel where the audition went down and hopped into Sarah's red ride. "You scared the crap outta me today. Chill with the impulsive stuff, okay? Once a role's gone, it's gone. Why'd you go and poke the bear with Nathan? If you piss him off, not only are you out, but I'll be blacklisted too."
Sarah was still shook from earlier. She suddenly hit the brakes, turned to Caroline, and gave her a hard look. "By the way, did you notice Nathan looked kinda off?"
Caroline knew exactly what Sarah was getting at. She'd been mulling over Nathan's look too. But she played dumb. "What's so weird about him?"
"Didn't you see? Ryan and Sophie look a lot like him," Sarah said, eyes locked on Caroline.
"Yeah, they kinda do, but not that much. Let's drop it," Caroline said, trying to brush it off.
"Not just kinda! They look like they were stamped out of the same mold! Could Nathan be Ryan and Sophie's dad?"
That hit Caroline like a ton of bricks, leaving her head spinning.
"Stop talking crazy," Caroline snapped.
"Think about it. It was pitch black, and you didn't know who the guy was. How do you know it wasn't Nathan? What if it was him? Oh my God, if Nathan's their dad, we're hitting the jackpot! You could snag any role you want, and you could tell anyone off. You'll be a household name, and I'll be the top agent in the biz. We'll be rolling in dough," Sarah said, practically seeing dollar signs.
"Are you nuts?" Caroline shot Sarah a look of pure disdain.
"I'm not nuts; I'm just hyped. I'll treat Ryan and Sophie like my own. Once they hook up with Nathan, I'll be tight with him. Oh my God, I'll be tight with the most powerful dude in Aurora City. I'm gonna be rich," Sarah laughed and hollered.
Caroline was getting freaked out.
"Sarah, get a grip," Caroline said, worried, giving Sarah a little shake.
Sarah took a deep breath to calm down. "I gotta keep it together. After all, I'm tight with Nathan. Gotta act like I'm high society."
Caroline groaned and slumped back in her seat. "Just drive, stop messing around. I'm starving."
Sarah fired up the car again but couldn't hide her excitement. "We'll take Ryan and Sophie to meet Nathan tomorrow."
Now Caroline was really freaking out. "It's one thing for you to be crazy, but leave my kids out of this."
"How am I hurting them? Having a tall, handsome, and loaded dad like Nathan is a win, right?"
"Who said Nathan's their dad? This is all in your head. Roxanne said the guy was a director, and Nathan's never been a director," Caroline said.
"A director? Roxanne did it for a role? Her first flick was 'Thunder,' and if the guy was a director, it could only be 'Thunder's director, Colin. But that doesn't add up. I've met Colin. He's a bald, middle-aged dude, old and gross. No way he's Ryan and Sophie's dad."
"Colin," Caroline muttered.
"Yeah, the director of 'Thunder.' If Roxanne really did it for a role, the guy could only be Colin."
Caroline whipped out her phone and searched for 'Colin.'
The top ten results were all gossip about Colin and actresses, but they were all from two years ago. He'd been off the radar for a while with no new news.
Just like Sarah said, Colin was short, fat, and a greasy middle-aged bald man. Hard to believe someone with his genes could have such gorgeous kids like Ryan and Sophie.
Caroline felt a wave of disgust just looking at him.
