Chapter 94

"I thought there was something going on between you and Nathan," Sawyer said, looking all curious.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. "What kind of connection could I possibly have with Nathan?"

Sawyer leaned in. "I heard that after you left, Nathan locked himself in his office and wouldn't come out. Isn't that weird?"

Caroline shrugged. "Maybe he was just working late. Doesn't he usually pull all-nighters?"

Sawyer shook his head. "No way. Nathan, as the CEO, rarely stays up all night. He values his health too much for that. What happened last night must have something to do with you."

Caroline looked puzzled. "Something to do with me?"

Sawyer nodded. "Yeah, Nathan acting all out of character, and you just happened to visit the company. There’s gotta be a connection."

Caroline paused for a moment's to think and blurted out, "Could he have been planning all night to make me disappear from Aurora City?"

Sawyer's eyes widened. "Disappear? Why?"

"He wants to fight for custody of Ryan and Sophie," Caroline said, hesitating before looking at Sawyer.

Sawyer looked confused. "What's wrong?"

"Could you be a spy sent by Nathan? Are you a double agent?" Caroline asked, suspicion in her eyes.

Sawyer looked taken aback. "How come?"

"Forget it, I don't want to argue with you. I don't trust you right now," Caroline said, waving her hand dismissively.

"I just want to know, is there something going on between you and Nathan? Like, is there something romantic between you two?" Sawyer asked, staring intently at Caroline.

Caroline laughed. "That's impossible! Are you here for a laugh?"

"No, I'm seriously asking. Do you like Nathan?" Sawyer pressed.

"Sawyer, are you out of your mind? How could I like Nathan? No matter how much I want to date someone, I wouldn't even look at him!" Caroline said through gritted teeth.

Sawyer was curious. "I'm just puzzled. Nathan is handsome and rich. Lots of women throw themselves at him. Why do you dislike him so much?"

"That's none of my business. I just can't stand him!" Caroline snapped.

"Then maybe Nathan has a one-sided crush on you," Sawyer said, shaking his head like he had it all figured out.

Caroline's eyes narrowed. "What nonsense are you talking about? Why do you have to link me with him?"

Sawyer shrugged. "I'm not talking nonsense. You went to his company, and he locked himself up all night. It must be because of emotional distress. With his background, he could easily pursue any girl, but he happens to like Nick's woman. He can't help it. He can only torture himself, thinking all night without finding a solution. Nathan is really pitiful!"

Caroline was so angry she almost threw her lunchbox at Sawyer's face.

He was too good at making things up! Not being a screenwriter was a waste of his talent!

"Sawyer, stop making up these ridiculous stories to disgust me. If you piss me off, I'll burn your hair!" Caroline shouted angrily.

Sawyer stroked his hair. "I don't mean to. I am just reminding you, my two uncles are handsome, but you can't like both of them at the same time."

Caroline couldn't take it anymore. She threw down her lunchbox and lunged at Sawyer. "I'll shut you up for good if you keep talking nonsense!"

Seeing the situation, Sawyer placed his lunchbox down and ran, shouting, "Help, Demi's gone crazy!"

His shout got the crew's attention, so Caroline had to stop.

People around started whispering.

"Aren't they just messing around? We better stay out of it."

"They actually look good together."

"They're the best actress and actor here, their acting is top-notch, really impressive."

Despite all the chatter, most folks didn't mean any harm. Some even thought Caroline and Sawyer made a surprisingly good pair, despite the age gap.

Not far away, Roxanne couldn't take it anymore. She stormed out of her trailer and marched up to Caroline. "Caroline, you are so shameless."

"Why do you say that?" Caroline replied with a smirk.

Roxanne demanded, "Didn't you promise me you'd leave Aurora City? Why are you still here, clinging to Sawyer?"

Caroline shrugged. "This can't be rushed. I want to leave too, but the Kennedy Family's influence is huge. We have to plan carefully, or I'll get caught and won't be able to leave again."

Roxanne snapped, "That's just an excuse!"

Caroline shot back, "Didn't you say you'd arrange for me to leave? You didn't do it right, and now you're blaming me?"

Roxanne was fuming. "You're hanging out with Mr. Nick Kennedy every day. How can I arrange it?"

"Don't worry, as long as you plan it well, I'll ditch Nick and get out of here," Caroline promised.

Roxanne tried to read her but failed when she saw Caroline's mysterious eyes.

In the top-floor CEO office of Kennedy Corp.

Jack walked in and gently placed several detailed profiles of actresses on Nathan's desk. "Mr. Kennedy, these are the carefully selected candidates to replace Demi. All of them are very promising. Please take a look."

Nathan picked up the profiles, quickly scanning through them.

His first impression was that they didn't look impressive enough.

Among the five candidates, three had similar faces.

The remaining two seemed to lack that unique charm.

Nathan frowned slightly, his expression cold.

"Are these the best choices?" He looked up, his gaze fixed on Jack.

"They're considered top in the industry. Three of them have won acting awards and are professionally trained with solid acting skills," Jack answered, slightly nervous.

Nathan's frown deepened.

This level was clearly not enough to replace Caroline.

Though Caroline was annoying and ill-tempered, her acting was excellent.

Her every action was integrated with the performance.

Her portrayal of emotions was a natural talent, beyond what William could direct.

"They're not good enough," Nathan concluded.

"Mr. Kennedy, these are indeed the best five choices available right now. There really aren't any better ones," Jack replied helplessly.

"Keep looking," Nathan's tone was firm.

Jack tried to persuade, "Mr. Kennedy."

Nathan insisted, "Keep looking."

Jack didn't argue further. Since even the industry's top choices were rejected, Nathan's standards were evidently higher. He had no choice but to comply.

Jack uttered, "Mr. Kennedy, I have some questions and hope to get your answers."

Nathan spoke, "Go ahead."

Jack continued, "You're so invested in this project, even allowing Sawyer back to help. Since Ms. Murphy's acting is excellent, why do you want to replace her?"

Nathan remained silent.
