Chapter 197

Caroline sat back down.

"What a joke! The Kennedy family is so unreliable! You had Ryan and Sophie call Nick 'Dad' for so long, and now you're telling me you didn't even use Nick's blood for the test? You guys are being unfair to Ryan and Sophie. How can you be so careless?" Caroline said angrily.

"Identical twins have very similar DNA, and he was in Stellaria at the time, so..."

"Nonsense! No matter how close, you can't be so hasty. It's ridiculous!"

This time, Nathan didn't argue back. He also felt that the matter was indeed not handled rigorously enough.

But he hadn't been with any woman for years, while Nick had been quite the playboy. When two kids who looked extremely similar suddenly appeared, his first reaction was naturally that they were Nick's.

"We made a mistake in this matter, but I've already had the samples sent for retesting. The comparison results will be out within a week. In the meantime, I want to know what really happened back then," Nathan asked.

Caroline remained silent.

Some things were really hard to talk about.

"The real father of the children knows the truth. I can't explain it," Caroline said, blushing.

Nathan was stunned for a moment, then realized it made sense.

Getting pregnant involved some embarrassing details. How could she talk about it?

Only the people involved could explain it clearly; it was not something to be discussed publicly.

Nathan nodded and didn't say anything more.

Then he poured himself another drink and downed it.

Since she couldn't talk about it, they would wait for the test results.

"I have to shoot a scene tomorrow, so I'm leaving."

"Okay," Nathan responded simply.

On the way back to the hotel, Caroline sat in the front passenger seat while Nathan sat in the back.

Neither of them spoke, each lost in their own thoughts.

They were thinking about the same thing but from completely different perspectives.

At the hotel's east entrance, the driver stopped the car at the door, and a bellboy opened the car door.

Caroline got out, but Nathan didn't; he wasn't staying there.

After taking a few steps, Caroline turned back and waved at the car, thanking Nathan for bringing her back.

The car window rolled down, and Nathan glanced at Caroline, acknowledging her.

Then the window quickly rolled up, and the car drove away from the hotel.

Caroline paused for a moment, then turned and walked into the hotel.

Sarah had been helping her find a place to live these past few days. Once they found a suitable place, Caroline would move out.

This place was too expensive to stay in long-term, and it made her uneasy.

She almost bumped into someone head-on. Looking up, she saw that the person was craning their neck to look outside, their eyes fixed on the direction Nathan's car had gone.

It was Nick.

"What are you doing here?" Caroline asked.

"I came to see you. Sarah said you were staying here, so I came to check on you."

Nick's eyes were still fixed on the direction Nathan's car had gone, but the car was long gone.

Caroline simply responded and walked towards the elevator.

Nick followed behind.

"What are you doing? I need to rest. Why are you following me?"

"I came to see you, and now you're sending me away as soon as we meet?"

"I really need to rest. Don't follow me; it's inconvenient."

"Was it Nathan who brought you back just now?" Nick stared at Caroline.

"Yes, his car is easy to recognize."

"Where did you go? Did Nathan arrange for you to stay here?"

Caroline was about to say "yes," but suddenly realized that this matter seemed a bit complicated.

And Nick seemed to be asking more than just a simple question; he seemed to have more suspicions.

"I was attacked by malicious fans and had nowhere to go, so I stayed here. Sarah is helping me find a place, and once we find a suitable one, I'll move out," Caroline explained.

Nick was silent for a moment.

"Alright, it's late. You should go back and rest," Caroline said.

But Nick still didn't move.

"Some things aren't what you think. Nathan and I..."

"Then what is it?" Nick suddenly asked.

"Well..." Caroline didn't know where to start.

"Are you going to tell me or not?" Nick suddenly got angry.

"Tell you what?" Caroline retorted.

"What's going on between you and Nathan?"

"There's nothing between us, just mutual dislike. That's all," Caroline replied.

"Nothing else?"

"What else could there be?"

"Then why was he waiting for you at the set today? Where did you go, and why are you back so late?"

"I was just a little hungry and wanted to eat something. I originally wanted to have some barbecue, but he thought it was too noisy there, so he took me to have some delicious beef and a couple of drinks."

"That's it?"

"Yes."

"He said he had something to talk to you about. What did you talk about?"

Nick wasn't stupid and wasn't easily fooled.

"Nothing much," Caroline replied reluctantly.

"Impossible! Nathan is a busy man. Even big shots have to make appointments to see him, yet he waited for you for so long. If it wasn't something important, he wouldn't have done that!"

Caroline was in a difficult position because Nick was right.

Nathan did have something important to discuss with her.

But how could she explain it? Where would she start?

"He did ask me some questions that I couldn't answer. If you want to know, you can ask him directly," Caroline said helplessly.

"You can't tell me?"

"I can't. Just ask him. Please don't push me. I have my difficulties. But please believe me, there's nothing between Nathan and me, at least not what you're thinking," Caroline said pitifully.

Nick looked at Caroline and felt that she wasn't lying.

"Alright, I'll ask Nathan tomorrow. Let's go."

"Go where?"

"You need to rest. I'll walk you up."

"No need, you should go back."

"Don't worry, I'll just walk you up," Nick insisted.

"Fine." Caroline didn't want to argue anymore and turned to walk towards the elevator.

At the door of her room, Caroline looked back at Nick. "This is where I'm staying. You should go back."

"Funny enough, I'm staying right next door," Nick said.

"What? Don't you have a home? Why are you staying at a hotel? When did you book a room?"

"I haven't booked it yet. I'll go down and do it now. I'll stay right next door."

Caroline finally realized. "Why are you doing this? This room costs over thirty thousand dollars a night."

Nick smiled. "It's not expensive."

Caroline thought about it and realized he had plenty of money and didn't care about the cost.

"Suit yourself. I'm going in." Caroline entered her room and closed the door.

Not long after she lay down, the doorbell rang. It was Nick.

"I'm right next door. If you need anything, you can call me," Nick said.

"What could I possibly need in the middle of the night? Are you crazy? Stop bothering me. I need to rest," Caroline said angrily.

"I just wanted to let you know. If you need anything, I'll be here to protect you."

"I'm perfectly safe here. I don't need your protection!" With that, Caroline slammed the door shut.
