Chapter 65
"You gotta tell me first, do you wanna be with me and Ryan?" Sophie pushed.
Ryan nodded eagerly, clearly on the same page.
Mentioning Ryan seemed to ease Nathan's awkwardness, and he nodded firmly. "Yeah, I do."
Sophie and Ryan visibly relaxed.
"We think you should get to know our mom. We spend a lot of time with her, so if you're with her, you'll naturally spend a lot of time with us too," Sophie explained.
The logic seemed solid, but Nathan sensed a hint of a scheme.
"And then?" Nathan urged Sophie to go on.
Sophie glanced at Ryan, looking for approval.
Ryan nodded, clearly pleased with Sophie's effort.
"My mom's an actress, super beautiful. I think I'm the most beautiful girl in the world, and she's the second," Sophie proudly introduced Caroline.
Nathan stifled a laugh and nodded.
"Mommy's name," Ryan reminded her.
"Right, my mom's name is Caroline," Sophie quickly added.
Caroline? Nathan racked his brain but came up empty.
The Kennedy Family was big in the entertainment industry, and Nathan knew most famous stars, even if he hadn't met them.
But Caroline didn't ring a bell, so she must've been relatively unknown.
"My mom's single right now. Despite having lots of suitors, she doesn't go for any of them," Sophie continued.
Nathan started to get a sense of what Ryan and Sophie were up to.
He couldn't help but wonder if this was their idea or if Caroline had put them up to it.
If it was their idea, fine. But if it was Caroline's, she was pretty crafty, using her kids to get close to him.
"Did your mommy ask you to say this?" Nathan asked.
Both Sophie and Ryan shook their heads.
"My mom actually doesn't want us to meet you," Sophie explained.
"She knows me?" Nathan was surprised.
Then he thought, given his fame, it wasn't unusual.
"No, she just saw your photo," Sophie confirmed Nathan's guess.
"Then why doesn't she want you to meet me?" Nathan pressed.
Sophie and Ryan shook their heads, genuinely clueless about why Caroline was against their meeting.
Nathan pondered, 'If Caroline saw my photo, she'd notice the resemblance between Sophie, Ryan, and me. Knowing this, why would she still prevent us from meeting? Is she feeling guilty, or does she have other motives?'
"Nathan, my mom's a good person," Sophie said seriously, seeing Nathan's silence.
Nathan nodded. "I believe that."
"So, we hope you and my mom can become friends and get to know each other," Sophie continued.
Her mature words were not typical of a child.
Nathan, though feeling a bit helpless, still nodded.
"Nathan, can I borrow your phone?" Sophie asked.
Nathan was surprised but handed her his phone.
Sophie opened Facebook, searched for, and sent a friend request to Caroline. But Caroline was busy on set and didn't respond.
"I used your Facebook to add my mom's Facebook. You can chat first and become friends," Sophie explained.
Nathan said nothing, though he was internally reluctant. He had no time for idle chat and didn't enjoy it.
The conversations he had with Ryan and Sophie this afternoon already exceeded what he usually had in an entire month.
As the dishes hit the table, Sophie figured her job was done and dove into her meal. Ryan, on the other hand, ate with a bit more grace. Nathan, while telling Sophie to slow down and peeling shrimp for her, barely touched his own food. But seeing Ryan and Sophie chow down happily made him feel pretty good.
Meanwhile, Caroline wrapped up filming, and it was already midnight.
She checked her phone and saw a message from Sarah: [It's late, Ryan and Sophie are asleep. I won't wait for you. The food is in the warmer. Don't eat too much, or you'll gain weight!]
Besides Sarah's message, there was a friend request with an avatar that looked like some kind of letter logo. Caroline didn't get it.
But any Kennedy Corp employee would have recognized it as the Kennedy Corp logo.
Caroline didn't know this person, so she neither accepted nor deleted the request.
When she got home, Caroline opened the warmer and found some seriously fancy food inside.
Not only was it pricey, but it also tasted amazing, way beyond Sarah's cooking skills!
Did Sarah hit the jackpot and buy this awesome food?
Caroline didn't think too much about it. Starving from filming late, she decided to eat first and worry about the calories later!
The food was incredible, probably the best meal Caroline had ever had since coming back to the country.
After eating, she felt a bit stuffed. She walked a few laps on the balcony, then went to the study to look over her script. Sleepiness took over, and she dozed off in the study chair.
The next morning, Sophie and Ryan woke up to find Caroline still asleep in the study.
Caroline's phone was nearby, and Sophie quietly took it and left.
Sophie opened Facebook and saw that Nathan's friend request was still pending.
She hit "Add," successfully connecting with Nathan.
She immediately sent a message: [Good morning.]
At that moment, Nathan was already at the gym for his morning workout.
His phone screen lit up with a message notification.
Caroline's Facebook avatar was a photo of Ryan and Sophie, with a username to match, "Super Genius Mom's Charm."
Nathan sighed inwardly. Caroline and her kids were really something, all self-proclaimed geniuses.
Nathan had no intention of responding, but seeing Ryan and Sophie's chat avatar, he felt a strange softness in his heart. He tapped a reply: [Good morning.]
Sophie was over the moon.
She quickly replied: [I want to see you.]
Without Ryan's careful planning, Sophie's move seemed pretty impulsive. She just thought that if Caroline and Nathan met sooner, they might become friends faster, and Nathan might become Caroline's boyfriend.
Sophie's intentions were pure, but to Nathan, this message was a red flag.
He thought that Caroline was indeed using Ryan and Sophie to get close to him, even playing tricks. It was simply outrageous!
He tossed his phone aside.
On the other side, Sophie waited anxiously for a while without seeing Nathan's reply. She quickly deleted all the sent messages and quietly returned the phone.
When Caroline woke up, she didn't notice her phone had been tampered.
After she freshened up, breakfast was ready.
It was porridge with fried eggs.
"Life quality has dropped drastically. Last night you ate so lavishly, packed with luxurious dishes. Sarah, did you strike it rich?" Caroline teased.
"Isn't this rich enough?" Sarah shot back with a hint of sarcasm.
Caroline explained, "I'm just curious how you managed to splurge yesterday. Frugal as you are, it's not like you to splurge."
Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Am I that stingy?"
